'Until They Sail' Opens at Grand Theatre Today "Until They Sail." new M-G-M drama starring Jean Simmons, Joan Fontaine, Paul Newman and Piper Laurie, comes to the Grand glamorous Theatre here today for a three- day stand. The film is based on a story by James A. Michener, noted author of "The Bridges of Toko-Ri." A vivid and compassionate story covering the years of World War II and their effect on a Zealand family of four sisters. "Until They Sail" was filmed against locales of New Zealand's principal cities, Wellington, capital and Christchurch. As the narrative of "Until They Sail" begins, the "Friskett Case" is the sensation of XJhristchurch.

Shiner Phil Friskett, a returned soldier, has murdered his wife, Delia, (Piper Laurie), on discovery of her infidelity to him while he was a prisoner of war. Delia's sister, Barbara (Jean has been called as a witness at the trial, and as she prepares to give her testimony, the story of what happened to her, to Delia, and to the other sisters, Anne (Joan Fontaine) and teenage Evelyn Dee), during four wartime years is unfolded in flashbacks. It is the story of the effects of loneliness, desperation and temptation on the women left behind. Father, brother and Barbara's husband are early war casualities. In an era of "Eat, drink and make love for tomorrow we die," Delia has buried the regret for her impetuous marriage to the boorish Shiner Phil in a series of af-- fairs with American service stationed in Wellington.

The more reserved Anne has kept the newcomers at a distance until she falls in love with Captain Richard Bates. They are to be married but he is kiDed without knowing that Anne is to have his child. Young Evelyn is caught up in the romantic illusions of wartime years but waits faithfully for hej Tommy. And, as the war nears its close, Barbara is drawn to Capt. Jack Harding (Paul Newman), liason officer between the Gl's and New Zealand girls.

It is Harding who. as an investigating officer, is forced to give testimony Delia's character which will free the man who murdered Barbara's sister. Toh outcome of the trial, its effect 0:1 the relationship between Barbara and Harding, and the final destinies of the remaining sisters bring the story to its close. THE PARIS NEWS, SUNDAY, NOV.
