16A Wednesday Evening February 25 1987 1987 Fort Worth Star-Telegram 1 Winwood steers awards into rock 'n' roll's fast lane Baker and Bruce Hornsby the Range Hornsby certainly was a deserving winner for Best New Artist But he too fits in the mellow music category the Grammy voters love Ever since the release of Simon's Graceland last year many critics have been hailing it if not campaigning for it as Album of the Year And the controversial recording indeed was named best LP of '86 by the Grammy voters However radio programmers have not agreed with the critics' assessment of Graceland and virtually ignored the record Simon countered with a carefully-planned media blitz that resulted in massive publicity and Graceland became a Top 10 album even though it has yet to produce a hit single Since its release Graceland also has been embroiled in political controversy Simon recorded part of the album in South Africa with South African musicians bringing the wrath of various groups who felt he had violated the cultural boycott of South Africa Simon had opened Tuesday's show by singing Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes with many of those same South African musicians Although he made no mention of the controversy during his acceptance speech he did heap special praise on his South African musical cohorts while making his feelings about apartheid clear "I'd like to express my admiration for the singers and musicians from South Africa who worked with me on Graceland" he said "They live along with other South African artists and their countrymen under one of the most repressive regimes on the planet today "And still they're able to produce music of great power nuance and joy And I find that just extraordinary They have my great respect and love" That's What Friends Are For originally was recorded by Rod Stewart in 1982 Warwick and her Friends released the tune last year And at the suggestion of actress Elizabeth Taylor the song became a money-raiser for AIDS with all pro ceeds going to the American Foundation for AIDS Research During Tuesday's ceremonies Sager announced that more than $750000 had been raised "I have been writing songs for a long time but I'd never won a Grammy before tonight" said Sager who scored her first writing hit in 1966 when the Mindbenders connected with her Groovy Kind of Love "To win one for That's What Friends Are For means so very very much to me It's more than just a song If the song can just touch your heart a little bit and make us care a little more so that we can find a cure for AIDS I will be very very happy" Friends marked the reunion of Warwick and Bacharach who (along with Hal David) wrote most of her hits in the '60s "Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach belong together forever" Sager said Streisand was beaten out by Simon for top album honors but she still managed to pick up the eighth Grammy of her career for The Broadway Album which was voted Best Pop Female Vocal Performance "I did have a feeling I just might win this award because today is the 24th and my lucky number always has been 24" Streisand said in accepting the award "I was born on the 24th I had my son on the 24th and it was 24 years ago I took home my first Grammy in the same category So with your continued luck and support I just might see you 24 years from tonight" Rock 'n' roll has received more than its share of slaps in the face from the Grammys through the years But it may have suffered the ultimate insult Tuesday when the obnoxious Beastie Boys were given the honor of announcing the rock winners Those winners did not include any of the Texas nominees The Fabulous Thunderbirds ZZ Top Eric Johnson and Timbuk 3 (in the Best New Artist category) all came up losers Rock winners were Tina Turner Robert Palmer the Eurythmics and Art of Noise with Duane Eddy Associated Press LOS ANGELES Here is a list ot tne winners Tuesday at the 29th annual Grammy Awards presentation at the Shrine Auditorium ALBUM
