14 1 0 rk tN 4) 6 i rV 3 II I No gnus good news when a nose knows where Nat Geo goes the lessons learned at National Geographic's knee: One of HG Wells' mistresses once was asked why such a paunchy homely writer was so successful with women Because he smells of honey she answered She was asked this by Somerset Maugham another famous dead person Now Wells' secret may seem only quaint to you But it is a revelation to a bachelor who has applied to his body every liquid ever advertised in Playboy including Aramis Brut and Turtle Wax This revelation was contained in a fascinating story on the sense of smell in the September National Geographic Smell it seems is our least understood most underrated sense But we all know how smells trigger vivid memories The smell of old-style variety stores when I can find them takes me back to my childhood: lightning bugs crawdad fishing Dizzy Dean and Peewee Reese calling the game on TV I walk into a variety store now take a whiff and the years fall away Suddenly once again I'm wearing a crew cut and a Davy Crockett coonskin cap As I leave the store a clerk comes chasing after me asking if I paid for that coonskin cap I tell her that I'm just having a flashback leave me alone The smell of sweat takes me back to junior high basketball practice a form of torture since outlawed by the Geneva Convention That's where I was when we were told that MK was dead: in the gym sweating into my Converse high tops Personally I LIKE the smell of sweat Fresh sweat mind you Not sweat that has been aged 40 years in wooden casks stored in some fullback's laundry hamper What'll it be: your porch light or mine? The story also explains pheromones which are odors that cause psychological or behavioral changes in animals Moths exude pheromones to put other moths in the mood for love If a male moth gets wind of a female's pheromone he will follow it unerringly for miles showing up at her door with flowers and a tiny Johnny Mathis album But the most unique part of the story is its scratch-and-sniff survey Personally I think National Geographic is one of the five best things about America ranking just above the Rocky Mountains and the New York Philharmonic and just below the Bill of Rights and Heather Lock lean So I'm proud to take part in its survey even though it asks me some very personal questions such as do I use aftershave more than once a day am I pregnant and if both how would I like to be on the cover of its October issue? And there are questions for each scratch-andsniff patch such as did I smell anything was it pleasant or unpleasant did it evoke a memory would I apply something that smelled like this to my body and which word best describes this odor Here the word choice ranges from "floral" to "fruity" to "foul" from "burnt" to "urine" and in the event that my tomcat has marked his territory on the stove both Jingle bells jingle bells Pavlov on a stick But there is a flaw in this survey by Nat Geo (I think I can get familiar after the questions it has been asking me) It is a very objective survey about one of our most subjective senses There should be space for the reader to comment on each of the six scratch-and-sniff patches: I Sorry On this one I smelled nothing Nothing reminds me of Uncle Hyram who started out with nothing but after a lifetime of hard work rose to the level of pauper Does that count? 2 Fruity Like a banana Creamsicle from that modern Pied Piper the ice cream man We kids would wait for him in the street The asphalt bubbled in the heat and the dry ice would smoke as he opened the door to the freezer which to us was a bank vault We'd hand him a note that read: "Hand over all yur Popsicles in smal denominashuns This water pistul is loaded" 34 Both these are spicy A bit like Avon's Bay Rum which came in 55-gallon drums It was the first aftershave I ever wore Of course that was before I found out about Wells' secret and began using honey At first I wasn't sure how much honey to wear Then I said: "Why do it halfway?" 5 Foul Very Where did you GET No 5 Nat Geo? And why didn't you sling some dirt on it fast? I know you get into some pretty earthy situations going around the world to get those great pictures and stories So I suspect that No 5 really is: Something scraped off the soles of Nat Geo's shoes after walking 900 miles behind a herd of migrating wildebeests A Ubangi warrior's combat Danskins Tibet yak cud with a hint of natural gas leak My old Converse high tops 6 Floral Uh oh No 6 smells like the perfume Tea Rose Each bottle of Tea Rose should come with a trained bodyguard Once in a Sears store I passed a woman who was wearing Tea Rose I had to be rushed to the Bathroom Fixtures department and hosed down with a Pollenex shower head I suspect that any woman who came within a 50- foot radius of me wearing Eau de No 6 would cause me to drop to one knee and propose And she drawn irresistibly to my Wellsian smell of honey would give me her best come-hither look But alas I wouldn't be able to come hither I'd be stuck fast to the floor (Mike Nichol? column appears in the Friday Television Editor From The Defenders through the unjustly short-lived The Law to Paper Chase the legal profession has been the focus of some of American television's finest dramatic hours Now comes a new series destined not only to join that distinguished company but to set a bold new standard for excellence Just as the cop show could never be the same after Hilt Street Blues the lawyer show will never be the same after LA Law In a network season promising a better-thanaverage crop of new shows LA Law stands out as by far the most venturesome and rewarding entry It already has received more critical praise than any premiering series since Hill Street came on seven years ago So conscious is NBC of the special quality of the new show that the network has arranged an unprecedented introduction for it Not only will the two-hour pilot episode be previewed at 8 pm Monday (on MIASChannel 5) it will be repeated at MO pm Sept 27 The series normally will occupy 1 Bob Hoskins left and Michael Caine in Mona Lisa By MICHAEL PRICE Star-Telegram Film Writer "Any chance you have to put an ordinary man in the cinema and turn him into a hero is wonderful" Bob Hoskins said of his breakthrough role in Mona Lisa The remark invites wider application but it is Mona Lisa just arriving in Tarrant County following a well-received New York run that pulls Hoskins' ordinary guyextraordinary film argument into sharpest focus The picture has an exclusive engagement at the AMC Hu len 10Bijou auditorium at Loehmann's Plaza in southwest Fort Worth Mona Lisa like an earlier job from its directorco-writer Neil Jordan 19134's The Company of Wolves is a transformation picture The transformation here does not affect the film's toughtender ex-convict George (Hoskins) so much as it affects our perception of George This accomplishment of involving the viewer in the process makes a singular triumph of Hoskins' Joseph Meserve: diver(se) career For Navy diver Joseph Meserve recovering spacecraft debris from the ocean floor is just another job Petty Officer 1st Class Meserve was one of about 10 divers who spent nearly three months off the coast of Florida recovering debris from the space shuttle Challenger and the remains of its crew It wasn't any different from any other salvage operation Meserve said "It's just another job It doesn't make any difference whether it's the shuttle or another aircraft "I was ready to go home You get tired of doing the same thing all the time" Meserve 32 said he has been assigned to recovery operations in the past but none like the recent operation 18 miles off Florida's coast Meserve son of Sam and Doris Meserve of Fort Worth is stationed aboard the Navy salvage ship USS Preserver whose home port is the Little Please see proves himself the first actor since fellow Englander Claude Rains (1889-1967) capable of banishing conventional notions of how a sensitive and romantic leading man should look and behave and capable of imposing definitions of his own Parallels between Hoskins and Rains are distinct: Each is a short unclassically handsome fellow with a distinctive voice an expressive face and a largish head that looks as though it were made for butting walls each came to the screen in early middle age from a grueling stage background each carries himself with a mixture of dignity sentimentality and self-effacement and each is better known for his dangerous but appealing characters than for his wholly sympathetic portrayals And each owes his most telling turn on the screen to a custom-tailored role involving an Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Joseph Meserve ordinary man confronting extraordinary danger from within and without: Rains as the calculating criminal lawyer who forgets his own first rule of survival in Crime without Passion (1934) Hoskins as the soul-of-a-poet bruiser in Mona Lisa his fireplug build contrasting strikingly with the statuesque presence of Cathy Tyson as the prostitute he worships and with the matinee-idol looks of Michael Caine as their cruel boss The inventory of resemblances runs deeper yet the bottom line being that each stands as virtually unique among players of his own day in ability to project a towering illusion and to humanize the brute Rains' closest contemporary match at rendering slight stature beside-the-point was James Cagney Hoskins' is Danny De Vito who generally has indulged in caricatured roles with the challenging exceptions of Terms of Endearment (1983) and Ruthless People (1986) Though a familiar figure in the
