WEDNESDAY, JAN. 19 Television LESTER record spinning on stations all over America has become an important part of programming, and it is now the most widespread programming type in broadcasting.

Started With Fillers This is ironic, in a way, because Block was originally scheduled to play records as "fillers" between bulletins jssuing from the famous Lindbergh kidnapping trial of 1935. Block's station at that time, WNEW, New York, had a reporter outside the courthouse in Fleming-ton, N. but it was impossible to tell when bulletins5 would be forthcoming for broadcasting. So Block's job, in the station's main studio in New York City was to "fill" between bulletins with recorded music. On Feb.

3, 1935, in the midst of the Lindbergh trial, an idea came to him. He decided he'd not only fill the time playing records, he'd also tell his listeners the music of the records originated in a beautiful "make-believe" ballroom, a crystal ballroom, if you please. He even added another imaginary touch and held imginary conversations with the musical talent that performed. The- "make-believe" ballroom idea was an instant success and, and, when the trial ended, Block given his own daily time on the air, which was the beginning of his present fame and eminence. Before that, Block had, schooled himself in radio technique and trained his fine voice at Station XEFD, in Tijuana, Mexico and then at Station KMPC, in Beverly Hills, where the idea for some kind of a disc jockey show of his own was probably born.

The idea was a good one, although not entirely original. There had been disc jockeys of various kinds prior to Block but idea coupled with his splendid radio voice and his talent for intimate conversation was what really caught on. Today, there is no question but that Block is one of the most accomplished entertainers on the air and he certainly has come a long way from that first "make-believe" ballroom program 20 years ago. He is currently one of the highest-paid men in show business; he has put over 400,000 records on the turntables he has over 60,000 selected records in his own collection the while establishing himself as one of the ntaion's top arbiters of popular music and popular music artists. He has even written or collaborated on a few hits of his own, including his theme, "Make Believe Ballroom Time," which the late Glen Miller recorded, "I Guess I'll Have To Dream The Rest," "This Is No Laughing Matter" and "Waiting For The Train To Come In," among several others.

Yep, there's no question about it, Block is a terrific showman, a national institution as disc jockeys go, and his upcoming anniversary jamboree on radio and TV Feb. 3. should be a star-studded whing-ding. Sign On Public Service Show Rhythm Ranch, Bruce V. Smith Modern Moods U.

Every once in awhile, though, an event of real significance and importance comes along, one that simply can't be ignored. Such a one is the. 20th anniversary of Martin "Make Believe Ballroom," which takes place Thursday, Feb. 3, which, will be heard over the full ABC radio and TV networks and dedicated to the 1955 March of Dimes campaign. The special anniversary program, featuring more than a million dollars worth of show business talent, will originate "live" in mammoth Manhattan Center, in New York, and will climax The March of Dimes Drive for Funds, thus serving a two-fold purpose: It will give Block's many fans and friends all over the country an opportunity to mark the occasion with' him and, more importantly, a chance to.

further the fight against infantile paralysis. The big show will be carried on ABC radio from 2:35 to 6 p.m. and again from 8 to 9:55 p.m., Feb. 3, and on ABC-TV from 2:35 to 4:30 p.m. and again from 8 to 8:30 p.m.

The latter schedule probably will be expanded between now and show time to accommodate more of the talent that's flocking to The March of Dimes' cause and Block. Dimes Drive Donations For anyone interested in attending in person two separate shows for two separate audiences will be held, one in the afternoon from 2:35 to 5:30 p.m. and again from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets can be had by sending donations of $1 to $5 a seat for the show, or $2 to $10 a seat for the evening show to Martin Block or The Greater New York March of Dimes, Box 222, New York City, 1. All proceeds will be turned over to The March of Dimes Campaign Fund.

The list of stars who'll participate is as long and it's growing longer every hour because Block has been in the broadcasting business a long time and has helped a lot of people. So far, it includes Paul Whiteman, Teresa Brewer, Julius LaRosa, The Chordettes, Kitty Kallcn, Joel Grey, The Mc-Guire Sisters, Denise Lor, Don Cornell, Jackie Gleason, The De-Marco Sisters, Tommy And Jimmy Dorsey- and, in fact, practically every musical star in New York during the week of the big event. They'll come for Block, who enjoys a unique position in the world of the disc jokey and who has held that position for nearly 20 years as you read this. During that time, he has had a tremendous effect on the entire musical field and has helped the record industry become a multi-million dollar annual busi-nss, among other things.
