No thanks to Monofibre hair extensions that can turn a crew cut into a head of long flowing hair in a matter of hours The hand-made monofilament fibers were developed by a group in London called Antenna Unlike hairpieces and wigs hair extensions may be worn full time for up to three months They first turned up in the United States about a year ago Ric Bowden artistic director of the Daired's in southwest Arlington said he learned of the technique from Antenna representatives attending the Global Hair Show in New Orleans in September He learned more about it in sessions with Antenna stylists at the International Hair Show in New York in March He and a friend taught 16 stylists from the Daired's salons how to apply the extensions The fibers come in 16 colors including lime green lavender pink red blue yellow orange black brown and blond To match a natural color the stylist mixes fibers of different shades For example if the hair is sandy blond the stylist would mix brown and blond fibers Two stylists are needed to apply the extensions They first create a four-stem braid of fiber and natural hair When they run out of natural hair to braid they split the extension into four stems and braid it to the desired length A bonding solution is applied and a piece of fiber is wrapped around the braid A heated clamp melts the fiber and seals it The process can take up to four hours depending on the number of extensions required The extensions should not be washed until 10 days after application said Bowden Because the fibers won't absorb water or shampoo shampooing should be concentrated at the scalp A silicon spray and ind? program on KERAChannel 13 tonight that's worthy of attention It is a soft calm presentation nothing dramatic There is certainly nothing to rival the exploding fire works of ABC's Liberty Weekend preview or even the documentary drama of Channel 13's movie The Statue of Liberty But Where the Heart Is has ample charm Beginning at 9 pm this 30- minute film takes a look at three Texans and their unending attachment to their homes It was done in celebration of the Texas Sesquicen tennial but in truth the same pro: gram could have been done about three people living in any one of our states It has much more to do with a person's feelings about roots and family than it does with state pride Where the Heart Is doesn't rely on flag waving and slogans to get its message across it relies on host Da vid McCullough to elicit the right conversations from his interviews Lambshead rancher McCullough who most will re- member as the host of PBS' Smith: sonian World begins his conversa: tions with Watt Matthews a 87-year old rancher i Matthews is at his desk on the Lambshead Ranch in West Texas by 5:30 each morning He documents the happenings of the day in his 4 diary then turns his attention malignant influence possesses Norman whenever he feels a surge of awakening sexuality who poses the threat Perkins' deep understanding of this diochotomy which he defined 26 years ago for master director Alfred Hitchcock's original Psycho makes Psycho III a worthier sequel than anyone has had the right to expect Perkins who bows here as a stylish director proves neither in-gracious nor self-indulgent It would have been too easy for example for a faithful-to-concept director to dismiss the well-meaning work of Australian director Richard Franklin on Psycho II (1983) as ill-suited to the Norman Bates myth Though Franklin's authorized sequel placed the extraordinary characters of Perkins and Vera Miles at the service of a commonplace murder mystery it still offered elements of brilliance and ferocity that Perkins has carried over to his own film The perspective Perkins creates thus establishes an honest trilogy it makes the underappredated Franklin entry look integral and it often matches the 1960 film in daring outrageousness Perkins also might have found it easy to let Norman chew the scenery to the exclusion of other characters' development His generosity prevents Pogue's screenplay an anxiety that permits nary a dull stretch There is a great deal of lapsed taste granted and it's a hungjury as to whether Hitchcock would have embraced indelicacy with such enthusiasm A motel room orgy staged by Fahey's hoodlum is crucial to establishing that character's worthlessness and yet it also may revolt viewers of more moderate appetites Some business involving a corpse on ice is no less disturbing ditto for a scene in which Norman plants a kiss on a cadaver Touches such as these exert a centrifugal tug on the viewer imposing a forbidden sympathy with the well-meaning but dangerously crazy Norman Perkins is perfection as an aging hopeful Norman who wants desperately to escape the abnormal emotional state that has been his lot since childhood As with bride from China Before they can reach her she is abducted Burton and Wang Chi learn that Lo Pan has engineered the kidnapping: He needs the bride in order to appease his gods so that they will allow him to regain a lasting human form Twenty tenturies ago Lo Pan had Kate Burton profile 7E The difficulty in choosing between what's real and what's not is a quandary everyone must experience from time to time That familiar emotional state makes it easy to relate to the terrors Kurt Russell confronts in his fourth picture with director John Carpenter Big Trouble in Little China Russell plays Jack Burton a blowhard with a courageous streak as formidable as the semitrailer rig he drives This fine addition to Russell's gallery of vividly realized unlikely heroes is the point man of Big Trouble a slaughterhouse trucker whose good-or-boy view of reality is turned inside out and upside down when he crosses paths with a 2258- year-old Chinese sorceror named Lo Pan (James Hong) Big Trouble marks the most unabashedly fantastic entry yet from Carpenter' whose best earlier works have drawn from the stoic Russell an astonishiig range of understated emotional resonance In league with Carpenter Russell has transformed himself into Elvis Presley bringing to that role (the made-for-television Elvis of 1979) far more than simple physical resemblance and he has created the memorable tough guys of Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981) and The Thing (1982) A Carpenter-Russell reunion is by nature a big deal and they make of this fourth shared venture a triumph of bilarre imaginative power
