N'' -sc The man draws $20000 a year His teams ''k 4 annually are challengers for the championship of 4 the Big 10 which long ago staked claim to being the best college football conference in the coun- il' try Furthermore as a winning coach at the state fi university Evashevski without trying is one of Iowa's leading citizens a man whose talents are muchly admired and whose company is avidly FOREST EVASREVSKI sought Why then should he give ve four-year notice? Quite obviously the man is not happy in his work There were reports a few seasons back that Evashevski might into private business but a pay raise and additional tenure ended that discussion Business is mentioned again So is a more-challenging coaching position 0 0 0 WHEN COACHING JOBS OPEN UP EVASHEVSKI SOUGHT I BY ROY EDIVAZDS I GAME AT A GLANCE RICE DUKE 7 7First Downs 20 Yards Gained Rushing coaching career where his name is one of the first mentioned any time there is a coaching vacancy at a school competing on the major level This ordinarily is wishful thinking on the part of the alumni who eventually settle for someone with perhaps less reputation or record of accomplishment but with greater availability Evashevski has been mentioned in the past for vacancies at Southwest Conference schools he will be in the future and he just might turn up down here One kicker in his resignation announcement was his request to "review any opportunities which are presented" Those should be considerable between now and 1963 alumni and administrators of colleges with losing teams being what they are Several of those opportunities undoubtedly will arise in the Southwest Conference Rumblings from the alumni are ever with us Right now just three weeks into the season already the pre-kickoff seminars produce comment to the effect that persons of Influence from this area or that are saying that Coach So-and-So Is a so-and-so and he's had it at school lose or else There's always the prospect too that the considerable time 'remaining will permit the adjustment of the differences that in4pired the Iowa coach's announcement Evashevski must be given credit for playing it a little cagier than Eddie Erdelatz who would have been with us in Dallas today as coach of the Navy except that a few months ago he gave four years less notice than Evashevski All the major coaching jobs having been filled by then Erdelatz is taking his football as a spec tator this season while ostensibly awaiting the annual winter rolling of coaching heads Like Evashevski Erdelatz also can pick his spot Ile came 4 close to landing in the Southwest Conference himself not too far back but apparently got a little better deal at the Naval Academy 1 as a result of the offer Then he decided it wasn't such a good deal after all and Wayne Hardin is now cutting his first slice of the head
