and the existing major league seems that of delay Talk of expansion (but no expansion) seems designed to cripple the Continental League before the founding eight cities can be lined up People new to baseball possibly will be frightened out of the league before it can become operative Branch Rickey the wise old man who heads the Continental is well aware of what is going on and he has turned his articulate wrath on Frick and the American League He accuses Frick and the AL owners of trying to throttle the Continental before it is born When Rickey accuses he usually is sure of his ground Directing a new major league will be one more "first" for Rickey He was the first to start building a chain when he was the brains behind the St Louis Cardinals The empire began at Houston which for its first touchdown and then struck o'lickly for two more in the final period The Tiger defense meanwhile limited Rice to only one serious scoring threat Daigneault a 200-pound halfback from Malone put Clemson In front 6-0 by ramming over from the one Snyder a Tiger co-captain from Baltimore intercepted a final-period Rice pass and moved 18 yards untouched for his touchdown Minutes later a freak play permitted Bill Mathis the left halfback to scor Quarterback Lowndes Shingler fumbled on the Rice four and Mathis covered it hen the ball popped into the end zone Shingler broke even on 21-14 Mead converted The victory by the two-touch down underdog Huskers ended a 44-game streak of unbeaten games for the Sooners in the Big Eight They were last tied by Colorado in 1952 Their 74- game skein included two ties In the opening minutes of Saturday's game it appeared Oklahoma which squeaked by Kansas last week 7-6 would crush the Huskers Their opening drive of 72 yards took just eight plays 11 with Fullback Prentice Gautt slanting off tackle from three yards out for the touchdown The ease of the scoring march indicated a rout But the Huskers who had dropped three straight games stiffened their defense after that and much of the opening period was played deep in Oklahoma territory giving the fans cause for hope Sooners Retaliate Nebraska came up with its first touchdown early in the second period with a 42-yard drive set up after a Tolly kick which left the Sooners near their goal and forced to punt The payoff came on a fourth-down four-yard pass from Tolly to End Dick McDaniel in the end zone The Huskers went ahead minutes later when Guard LeRoy Zentick grabbed a partially-blocked punt on the Oklahoma 36 and aided by a key block by Center Jim Moore raced across the goal Nebraska still trailed however 14-12 at the half on the margin of two extra points kicked by Sooner Center Jim Davis The Sooners retaliated quickly after the second Nebraska TD and marched 56
