ICU Coach Jim Wacker consoles his players on the bench near the end of the game Saturday UT-Arlington NTSU Mc Neese Lamar at Drake at Arkansas State at Louisiana Tech at NE Louisiana tory The first turnover was a Bates pass intercepted by Wichita State free safety Ken Stonebreaker at the Shockers' 5-yard line While being chased on a rollout to his left Bates tried to throw back toward the middle of the field His weak pass went straight to Stone-breaker UTA's next drive-killing turnover came after Wichita State's Brad Fleeman had kicked a 32-yard field goal with 3:06 left in the half making the score 7-3 The second UTA turnover came when fullback Tony Brown lost a fumble at the Shockers' 29 ending a UTA drive that had begun at its 12 Brown's fumble with 46 seconds left in the second quarter was recovered by Wichita State nose guard Doug Maxwell Because of the two first-half turnovers the Mavericks were unable to take full advantage of their best offensive half of the season UTA gained 279 179 on the ground and controlled the ball almost two-thirds of the first half McKyer's 93 rushing yards in the first was almost double his previous single-game high this season 48 yards in UTA's 38-23 loss earlier this season to Sam Houston State The Mavericks finally scored their second touchdown with 4:52 left in the third quarter Bates completed an 85-yard drive with a 1- yard quarterback sneak that increased UTA's lead to 14-3 Scott Roper then added a 31-yard field goal with 11:11 left in the fourth quarter upping UTA's lead to 17-3 By MIKE TOWLE Star-Telegram Writer UT-Arlington scored 24 second-half points Saturday night to roll to a 31-3 nonconference victory over Wichita State before an announced crowd of 4850 fans at Maverick Stadium In winning their second straight game the Mavericks 2-2 overall fell barely short of reaching a single-game record for total yardage Behind the running of tailbacks Jarvis McKyer (121 yards) and Chris Jackson (92 yards) and the passing of quarterback David Bates (216 passing yards) the Mavericks (with 572 total yards) fell just 9 yards short of tying their single-game record The all-time mark of 581 yards was set in 1978 against Northwesttouisiana "But we're not where we can crawl on top of the barn and start crowing" UTA Coach Chuck Curtis said "All we want to do is improve a little bit every day and a large amount from one game to the next" UTA next Saturday will travel to Drake for a scheduled 1:30 pm game The loss for Wichita State 1-4 was its fourth straight since a season-opening 16-10 victory over Kansas State The Mavericks led only 7-3 at the half But Bates' third-quarter touchdown run from 1 yard out put UTA in control Later in the fourth quarter a 6-yard scoring run by Jackson followed by reserve quarterback Jay Fitch's 1-yard dive with 3 seconds left blew open what once had hinted to be a close game After a scoreless first quarter the That left no one to pick up Bobby Joe Edmonds who sneaked out of the backfield and ran what Arkansas calls a 30-post "That was a pretty good call on their part" Billy Jones said "When you gamble you get caught some and we got caught" "I was as wide open as the score was" Edmonds said of his 27-yard touchdown reception of the Razorbacks five misfires Saturday only one was broken up by the TCU secondary The other incompletions were the result of poor throws These stats reflect a disturbing trend for TCU The Frogs have only one interception in four games At this same time last year TCU had picked off 10 passes including three in the 32-31 victory over the Razorbacks TCU finished last season with 20 interceptions Mavericks went ahead 7-0 on McKyer's 3-yard run with 12:09 left in the second quarter McKyer's scoring run completed a 9-play 77-yard drive The drive included a 36-yard scramble by quarterback David Bates and a McKyer 19-yard pickup to the Shockers' 19 Three plays after his 19-yard pickup McKyer kept the drive alive with a fourth-down 4-yard dive over right tackle to the State 6 He scored two plays later On their next possession the Mavericks kept moving forward with a drive that started at their own 45 It carried all the way to the Wichita State 8 before UT-Arlington lost the first of two first-half turnovers both coming when the Mavericks had driven well into Shockers' tern By DAVID MOORE Star-Telegram Writer Arkansas quarterback Greg Thomas is not blessed with a hydrau lie arm Saturday afternoon at Amon Carter Stadium he did not need one Thomas and his receivers kept the TCU defenders spinning on their heels When the final curtain was dropped on this football ballet the Razorbacks had danced away with a 41-0 victory Swan Lake? It was more of a Swan Song for the TCU defense which gave up 457 yards this day And it was Thomas' arm that played a ma jor role in the proceedings "Every time I threw it the backs and receivers had turned their man around and were wide open" said Thomas who was six of 10 for 125 yards and one touchdown "The cornerbacks were playing a little bit soft" Pointing a finger at TCU's secondary in Saturday's loss is a bit unfair The Razorbacks after all did rack up 332 yards on the ground The TCU failed to score for the first time since 1982 But the Horned Frogs were victimized by a defense that was stacked to counter the Arkansas Flexbone TCU used free safety Falanda Newton for run support left Billy Jones and Ricky Rougely alone at the corners in sin gle coverage "The free safety would usually help us more than he did today but! don't see where that made any big difference" Jones said Maybe it didn't But the Razorbacks made a habit of burning the Frogs through the air at key times "I don't think we played that bad but in certain situations they seemed to hit some key passes on us" TCU cornerback Joe Johnson said The Razorbacks didn't pound the Frogs with their passing They merely probed But Thomas always seemed to stick a pass into the TCU secondary at the right moment Case No 1 The Razorbacks had a first-and-10 on the TCU 47 with 1:46 left in the second quarter Thomas found split end Donnie Centers over the middle for 35 yards It appeared there was a mix-up on the play because no one was near Centers There was no mix-up Jones said he had Centersall the way Sort of "That was my man" said Jones who is the old man in the TUU secondary as a junior "Ile just ran a good pattern and beat me He ran a good route He gets all the credit" Roughly a minute later the Razorbacks scored the touchdown to take a 14-0 lead into the locker roomat the half Arkansas picked up 72 yards on the scoring drive and 49 of those came through the air Case No 2 The Razorbacks had taken a 21-0 lead on their first possession of the third quarter Thomas started the Razorbacks' second possession by hitting Steve Jones for 17 yards on a comeback pattern After two running plays Arkansas went to the air again It was third and 1 and TCU stacked its defense to stop the run James Rouse faked the dive into the line and the TCU linebackers took the bait Tight end Luther Franklin was covered by Rougely TEXAS RUBBER SUPPLY Inc 11 CLEA itk KICE!
