Penn State as No 1 By BARRY JACKSON Herald Sports Writer NBC took a bit of a gamble by using its fifth-team NFL announcers Tom Hammond and Cris Collinsworth on Orange Bowl the only prime-time and most significant bowl game The results: Collinsworth proved worthy of the assignment but Hammond had some lapses on play-by-play and technical gaffes hampered final Orange Bowl telecast (The game shifts to CBS next year) NBC cameras missed a penalty call and were fooled by Nebraska fakes on several occasions there were a couple of mistakes with graphics and the network show the score enough even twice failing to superimpose it going to commercial an import tant viewer service But NBC to blame for one negative As is always thet case with games at the Orange Bowl the loud public address system was a distraction drowning out the announcers at times-' Collinsworth in his biggest NBC assignment provided gen- erally cogent analysis He pointed out early that Nebraska cornerback Barron Miles was1: defending too conservatively -and Miles was promptly beaten by Jammi German Collinsworth- also noted that the Nebraska cor-- nerbacks were no help in the middle of the Ace sideline reporter John Dockery also was alert to this saying he was by--1 single coverage on UM receivers Collinsworth took a jab at reputation for overly-ag-gressive play After Booker-Pickett sat briefly on a player he had tackled Collinsworth said: Miami Collin-- sworth would have been justified to criticize Pickett Hammond made a few mis-" takes although he corrected -some of them He give down and distance quickly enough after plays and too 1 referred to players only by their last name which enough considering UM has seven play- ers named Jones UM Coach Dennis Erickson came across as irritable After -Dockery asked him at halftime if penalties resulted from his play--ers losing concentration Erick- 1 son said 1 had the answer do Erickson then walked away like to get Dennis Erickson out of town You could send him to Seattle Charlotte any place looking for a coach they can have him Jim Smith Miami I i5!
