of Mesquite last year in December KRLD TV's onthe-spot news team was there TV 33's unique coverage of the event prompted United Press International (UPI) to bestow the local station with the syndicate's 1985 Best Spot News Award In addition UPI named KRLD TV's 7 pm newscast the best in Texas commending Metromedia's newest station for "emphasizing content over cosmetics" and "offering a refreshing new direction for Texas television news" When contrasted to other local independent stations in the Metro2 plex KRLD is still in the infancy stages (The first air date was on Itigi July 30 1984) Depending heavily upon the reputation of its broad casting cousin KRLD radio the television station's staff of 25 was "eager and anxious" about its first 3 broadcast Media experts agree that the DallasFort Worth area is an intense and competitive marketplace for viewers thus the station executive had something to be a bit anxious about But according to Jane Kline assistant promotion director the success of the station's news hour is a result of it's air time from 7 to 8 pm co Commercials for the upcoming son's news program will remind viewers that no matter how hard e4 ri some of them may try they may raj never make it home in time for the news r-1 For those caught in rush-hour Vi traffic KRLD's answer is the 7 pm newscast which combines 30 min utes of local news programming with an additional 30 minute broad" cast of CNN national and interna tional headline-making events Led by the team of Quin Mathews Carl White and meteorologist Dave User KRLD news is committed to providing up-to-the-minute news coverage for this its second year Their goal is to find the top stories of the day Presently the station has news bureaus In Washington DC and Fort Worth and plans on spending $200000 in Tarrant County in order to achieve Its goals for 1985-86 Special project programming that focuses on certain issues such as housing and education are also part of 33's programming emphasis Another emphasis of the independent station's lineup is to provide first-run off network programming Beginning in September KRLD will air Dallas and Dynasty hailed by station officials as "the world's most popular TV programs" The feuding Ewings are scheduled 6 to 7 pm Monday through Friday The Carringtons will carry on from 10:30 to 11:30 pm Monday through Friday Described as the world's most successful television show with a glamorous and compelling cast Dynasty will be aired for a total of 117 power-filled hours this season This will be the first syndicated run of the Aaron SpellingDouglas CramerRichard and Esther Shapiro production Other first-run off network programming includes the station's second season of Too Close for Comfort starring Ted Knight which Is scheduled Saturdays at 6 pm and Sundays at 5 pm Small Wonder the comdedy series about a normal family and their not-so-normal robot daughter is a new production from Metromedia Producers Corp a national broadcast group Billed as a "brown-eyed beauty from out of the blue" Vicki (Voice Input Child identicant) is a piece of sophisticated software with a lot of personality (and no cavities) Written and produced by Howard Leeds whose credits include Diff'rent Strokes Silver Spoons The Brady Bunch and the Facts of Life Small Wonder may make a hit in a very big way this season The programming for TV 33's fall season is what Kline called Impressive one that shows it is serious when it comes to competition For example the station officials were concerned about programming for children and wanted to leave a superior morning and afternoon block open for kids said Kline Last April Thundercats a Japanese-animated cartoon was aired by KRLD Calls by parents and children for the show's return were so great the station will air the cartoon again this season Monday through Friday at 7:30 am and 4:30 pm Jayce The Wheeled Warrior is slated for 4 pm with Gimme A Break scheduled for 5 pm and Benson at 5:30 pm Monday through Friday Mid-day viewing during the week includes Police Woman (11 am) The Saint(Noon) and the Streets of San Francisco (1 pm) KRLD's prime time schedule follows the 7 to 8 pm news and includes Hutch Kojak and the Odd Couple at 10 pm (a "nice alternative to Monday through Friday In addition KRLD will air Comedy Tonight a 30-minute Metromedia production featuring favorite comedians of our time beginning A Texas favorite Dallas airs weeknights on KRLD Sept 23 at 11:30 pm Monday through Friday Weekends are action-packed with All-Star Wrestlingat noon Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm Live NCAA Football kicks off Saturdays at 7 pm through November 30 Other programming attractions include public affairs presentations mini-series and movies Some movies to watch for: A Force of One and The Octagonwith Chuck Norris Mother Lode with Charlton Heston Middle Age Craze with Bruce Dern 10 to Midnight with Charles Bronson and Valley Girl That Championship Season is a TV 33 commercial television premiere that stars Martin Sheen Stacy Keach Paul Sorvino and Dern as former basketball stars Robert Mitchum plays coach to the onetime champs whose story centers on the anniversary their victory Each has spent the last 24 years trying to recapture the magic of that memory and overcoming the power each fights to control Programs unique to Channel 33 this season fun at the music video craze Saturdays at 6 pm Alfred Hitchock Mondays at 10:30 pm and Man From UNCLE Monday at 11:30 pm The Saturday movie block from 1 to 6 pm is what Mark Lambed programming director attributes much of the new station's success "Good old vintage movies appeal to a slightly older audience" he said For the upcoming season some of these classics Include White Heat ule changes nightly with Dance Fever on Mondays New Avengers on Tuesdays Joe Forrester Wednesdays WWF Championship Wrestling Thursdays and Rich Man Poor Man Book lion Fridays One of the projected Channel 27 highlights this next season is the introduction of a new program with a unique format Jocelyn's Weekend that gives a 30-minute look at local headlineentertainment news Hosted by Jocelyn White the show will be a Saturday feature at 6:30 pm TV movie reviews weekend happenings fashion dining and lo a secondary affiliate of NBC in the DallasFort Worth market McKay said KDFI is able to take a checkerboard approach in programming giving audiences a chance to watch something out-ofthe-ordinary during the time slots that tend to be filled with programs of the same format For instance 27 airs one of its new shows $100000 Pyramid weekdays at 5:30 pm a period usually devoted to news Another example of this alternative programming strategy is found throughout the week Monday through Friday
