AL BY BILL VAN FLEET Star-Telegram Sports Editor NEW ORLEANS Sept 27 Defense has been a Texas strongpoint for two seasons under Darrell Royal but the Longhorns were thankful for a powerful offense as they headed back to Texas Saturday morning The ability to move the ball on three long scoring drives and a pass that clicked for two points after the third touchdown enabled the Texas team to turn back Tulane 21-20 The final Tulane touchdown came on a post-gun chance with an interference ruling on what would have been the last play setting up the Green Wave in business on the Texas 10 The Greenies took advantage of this last chance and passed 10 yards or touchdown then ran for two points to cut the score from 21-12 to 21-20 after the game's final gun had sounded once The score probably would have been more representative of the play had it remained at 21-12 but there's no denying that the Greenles gave the Texans all they wanted They passed for 222 yards on 16 completions in 22 attempts and rushed for another 204 yards It was the most yards any Royal-coached team has yielded in a regular-season game The Greenies used a pro-type offsense with a wing end spread 10 yards on one side and a wing-back about the same distance on the other side most of the time Occasionally both ends would be split and a halfback set up in one of the gaps It is an offense similar to the one Baylor is using this year The first two Tulane touchdowns were against Long'iorn second stringers and the final one came against a mixture of third and fourth stringers but the Tulane offense moved well most of the night Longhorn first stringers got all the Texas touchdowns Quarterback Bobby Lackey plunged a yard each time for the first two and George Blanch ran three yards for the final one The Ile worked the rest of the series too" The next year or maybe the year after they put the extra umps in uniforms on stools along the foul-lines and gave them responsibility for the home runs and border line drives Finally Judge Landis ordered: "Make 'cm stand up" and the present alignment has been in practice for 15 years "I don't know of any game or series that might have been affected by them not being out there" said Cal But I remember one time when I called a Yankee home run foul It went into the upper deck in right and was foul when it landed But the pole in those day! only went up about 30 feet and I couldn't tell you now whether it was foul or fair as the ball went over the pole "Nobody complained but a man out there would have been sure The infield umpires got $3000 per man for the series the outfield twosome $1500 each!
