WELCOME THOME By JEFF GUINN Star-Telegram Writer The first results of the Fort Worth Corp's "Fort Worth Welcome Home" public relations campaign are beginning to appear in major US newspapers in the form of stories about the city Stories about Fort Worth and its effort to shed its "Dallas suburb" image have appeared in recent weeks in The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune the public relations firm hired by the Fort Worth Corp told Chamber of Commerce directors Thursday Burson-Marsteller was hired last September by the Fort Worth Corp an invitation-only group of local business leaders and unveiled its "Fort Worth Welcome Home" marketing program in February One of the things the firm is doing is trying to convince editors and writers at major publications that there are interesting stories that could be written about Fort Worth Burson-Marsteller's budget for its first 15 months of work on the "Fort Worth Welcome Home" project is $18 million Joseph Grant founder and chairman of the Fort Worth Corp and chairman of Texas American BankFort Worth said BursonMarsteller's services cost the Fort Worth Corp $240000 in 1984 and $801000 so far in 1985 "The majority of the funds so far this year have been spent by the company in establishing Fort Worth news bureaus (at Burson-Marsteller offices around the country)" Grant said "There have also been the costs of developing a brochure and a video Beginning in September our advertising purchase numbers will get pretty large We'll spend $400000 a month on advertising starting in September" Ads touting Fort Worth as a good place is which to "grow" businesses and families will be placed in various area editions of The Wall Street Journal Forbes magazine and several other publications specializing in business relocation information Fort Worth Corp members have pledged $3 million to a three-year marketing effort on behalf of Fort Worth as a fine place in which to live and do business Business relocation prospects attracted by Fort Worth Corp-funded public relations ef forts will become the responsibility of Wayne Sterling the chamber of commerce director of economic development "Through our efforts we want to get Fort Worth on the short list for companies considering relocation" said company vice president Ron Kelly "That's as far as we can take it Then the people from the city must sell Airlines will begin flights from Meacham Field to Oklahoma City and Tulsa on Aug 19 and to Abilene on Sept 4 the airline announced Thursday The expansion will create a small hub operation at Meacham Field where arriving passengers can make connections on departing flights to other cities said Sheldon Srulevitch Fort Worth Air's executive vice president lie said he expects this connecting service through Fort Worth to become popular with passengers flying between the three new destinations and Houston where Fort Worth Air already serves both Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport Fort Worth Air also flies to Austin and San Antonio The introductory fare between Fort Worth and Oklahoma City or Tulsa will be $25 one way until Sept 15 After thatthe fare will be $32 one way The fare between Fort Worth and Abilene will be $37 one way There will be two daily round trips between Fort Worth and both Oklaholba City and Abilene and one daily round trip between Fort Worth and Tulsa Flights between Abilene and San Antonio or Austin will cost $49 one By JIM FUQUAY Star-Telegram Writer Dunlap Co a Fort Worth-based retailer that owns the Stripling Cox store chain has agreed to buy the Amarillo store of Sakowitz the high-fashion Texas retail chain that declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week Lloyd Tidmore vice president and general manager of the Stripling Cox stores confirmed Dunlap's purchase of the Amarillo Sakowitz on Thursday Roy Fly manager of the Amarillo store said the store will close Monday for inventory then reopen Tuesday under the Dunlap's name He said the store has remained open following the Aug 1 filing of Sakowitz' bankruptcy petition Fly said Dunlap plans to revamp the merchandise mix of the Amarillo store "Sakowitz went from middle to extremely high prices" he said "We're still going to operate this as a fine specialty store but we'll go a little more with the meat and poiatoes for this market" he said He said Dunlap will concentrate on goods whose prices range from moderate to expensive "We're extremely low on inventory right now What we have will stay But there's already mer Fort Worth Air's service should be more convenient for Tarrant County travelers "In the Abilene market we expect to pick up a lot of traffic from the roads" Srulevitch said "Abilene is not a terribly large city but it's far enough out there that if a guy wants to go out and come back in one day he has to fly You can't drive it and get any appreciable amount of business done" Abilene is about 150 miles west of Fort Worth Fort Worth Air will not have to everything down to the tortilla chips and hot sauce will have to be cleared by the Secret Service For security reasons the White House will order the ingredients directly from El Chico's suppliers But that has led to concerns about quality quarters is on Fort Worth's west side Officials of Marketing Mangement and Brown Williamson de-dined to comment specifically on the reasons for the new arrangement Chairman Herbert Pease of Marketing Management said that the switch to Brown and Williamson was "a business decision that we don't care to discuss in detail" But spokesman Jim Lott of Brown Williamson said "We are excited by the prospects for generic brands" Lott said Brown Williamson will manufacture the cigarettes at its plant in Macon Ga Marketing Management will distribute the product Marketing Management also markets private label and generic goods such as crackers salad dressing dishwashing liquid and paper towels Since their introduction in 1982 generic cigarettes have taken an increasingly larger portion of the US cigarette market In 1983 the first year tliat sales of generic cigarettes could be measured they drew 33 chandise rolling our way" Fly said Dunlap owns 32 stores in Texas Missouri New Mexico and Oklahoma Most of its West Texas stores operate under the Dunlap name The company moved its headquarters from Lubbock to Fort Worth in 1977 Fly said the purchase followed several weeks of negotiations Robert Sakowitz said last week his stores had to reorganize after suffering heavy financial losses following an ambitious expansion plan that went sour Sakowitz said his stores were concentrated in cities that depended on the oil industry which suffered a sudden decline in 1982 Sakowitz had said he would examine the chain's 23 stores and boutiques and likely close or sell in- dividual locations Sakowita earlier this week closed its boutique store in Dallas' Highland Park community Although Sakowitz blamed the oil bust for his troubles Dunlap also operates in oil-dependent markets Fly said and yet seems to have escaped the damage that did in Sakowitz "They've got stores in Odessa Midland Tulsa Dunlap is familiar with this type of market" Fly said Dunlap also has stores in Pampa Wichita Falls and Lubbock company's 5 percent increase in worldwide net sales to $135 billion from $129 billion a year earlier In the final quarter of fiscal 1985 Procter Gamble's earnings plunged 37 percent to $115 million vs $183 million for the same period in 1984 Earnings per share for the quarter were 69 cents down from $110 a year earlier The their refined palates at an El Chico restaurant may soon get a tasteof the chain's Tex-Mex food compliments of President Reagan The Dallas-based restaurant chain announced Thursday it will cater the annual Congressional picnic scheduled for Sept 18 on the south lawn of the White House White House press officials were mum on the subject explaining they don't discuss events more than a month before they occur But can President Reagan weather a meal of hot sauce and way Flights between Abilene and either Houston airport will cost $69 one way Flights between Oklahoma City or Tulsa and all points south of Fort Worth will cost $49 one way All those flights stop in Fort Worth Although several major airlines serve Oklahoma City a nd Tulsa from DallasFort Worth Airport Srulevitch said Fort Worth
