Sports Director DALLAS Oct: defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl 21-7 here this sunny Saturday afternoon but not before the spirited Longhorns showed spectacular improvement by making a solid effort against tremendous odds The Boomer Sooners playing up to their rating as No 1 in the nation had to go for it all the way They trailed at the end of the first quarter were only even at the half and didn't actually sack up their 43rd consecutive victory until the 12th minute of the fourth period It was while the daring Texas team was boldly passing from its own end of the field in an effort to tie the score that Jakie San defer of Breckenridge completing a brilliant day's work at left half for OU intercepted a pass and returned 20 yards to the Tex as 21 set up the clinching touch down Turn Offsets Another That turn however only offset another that cost the Sooners an earlier touchdown: a penalty that canceled most of a 97-yard rust by Center Jim Davis across the Tex as goal line So the two-touchdown margin was about the true difference be tween the teams That was a vast improvement for Texas over the seven-touch down difference (45-0) here last year and the Texas score was its first against the Sooners since 1954 improvement however showed more vividly on the field than on the score board Those Longhorns came to play and they stayed in ther all afternoon matching block for block tackle for tackle in a rugged a dsmashing contest that had the capacity crowd of 75504 standing and roaring most of the time Defensive Battle I 1 1 1 1 II I I i 1 1 i --Star-Telerram Photo by AL than nine interceptions and that was two more passes than were corn- pleted out of 33 thrown Oklahoma's stylish fast-striking ground game rolled up 303 yards rushing but the Sooners were stalled on the ground so often they threw the ball 13 times an unusual number for them They completed only two for 24 yards and saw four grabbed by eager Longhorns Texas couldn't move on the ground against the fast-and-aggressive Oklahoma defense and was forced to take to the air With Walter Fondren who played more and as well as anyone on the field doing most of the pitching the Longhorns cornpleted seven of 18 including the touchdown and had six other attempts smothered by rushers be fore the ball could be launched Five of the Texas passes were Intercepted but only two really hurt them and that was after they were trailing 14-7 Fondren Kicks The Sooners had to move 68 yards for their first score and 80 for their second The third re quired only 21 yards after San defer's 20-yard return Texas used an interception to score first After a 60-yard quick kick by Fondren had put the Sooners inside their own 10 Mickey Smith of Texas pulled in a deep OU pass and returned eight yards to the 17 Only five plays were needed to score After Max Alvis and Turn to Oklahoma on Page 4 The Texas Christian gridmen missed on a scoring opportunity at the outset and finished the first period in a scoreless deadlock but counted twice in the second and held a 14-0 advantage at halftime They added a touchdown in each of the final two quarters and made the victory ridiculously easy Dick Finney Marvin Lasater and Jimmy Shofner all contributed long-gainers that thrilled the crowd of 20000 Finney made the longest touchdown run a 49-yard beauty in the third that saw him have clear sailing after he got a good block from Joe ItObb near the line of scrimmage Lasater was the receiver on a 65-yard pass play from Finney that wound up on the three-yard line and set up the Frogs' second touchdown in the second period Shofner chipped in a 34-yard scamper in the fourth that was the big one of a 9-play move that covered 89 yards to touch down Shofner also set up the first touchdown by picking off a Tide
