"But we have a small school here, and usually a small turnout for the baseball team, so I'm glad to have them. They've really helped us a lot this season. "I don't look at them as girls anymore. They're just part of the team. The boys on the team feel the same way.

The girls aren't treated any differently than they are, and that's all that matters to them. In fuel, their hair is shorter than some of the hoys we have." He said Herndnn High tried to play girls in baseball several years ago. but there was a rule against it at the time. "We've never come up against this before because most schools offer a sport tor girls comparable to the ones lor boys, such as volleyball instead of football and Softball instead of baseball." Williams said.

"I have to admit I'm not in favor of girls playing with the hoys. I think it creates a whole lot of problems. A hoy gets to feeling too self conscious about playing against a girl, and that's1 not fair to him. "Bui the rule is there and there's not much you can do about it. They're eligible to play." Sauro, meanwhile, said that Linda, a 5-foot, 86-pound freshman she's 11 pounds away from being a 97-pound weakling has become his regular second baseman Or rather, second baseperson.

Kathy, a 5-foot-3, 120-pound reserve, fills in at second and also in the outfield. "Linda's quite goad," said Sauro. "The teams we played have been impressed with tier. At the slart of the games, she usually gets razzed a lot, but when "lliey see her field, they don't laugh anymore." Ross. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a floor length gown of peau silk wiUi a high neckline, long tapered sleeves and an A-line skirt ending in a train. The neckline, bodice and sleeves were trimmed with Alencon lace and pearls, A deep ruffle of lace edged the hemline and train. Appliques of lace and pearls also accented the train. Her silk illusion veil fell from a Alencon lace Camelot headdress.

She carried a cascade of orchids, daisies and baby's breath. grjMMSijTPPUPOM "Squirrel" "would rather knock a ball down with her chest or take a shot with her body, rather than let the ball get by her. She's as scrappy as Ihey come." He said he generally uses his designated hitter to bat for whichever girl Is in the lineup, "But when we played Sistersville. which was in the state semi-finals last year, Kathy played and she lined a double over the left fielder's head. Their pitcher sure was surprised," Sauro said.

Sistersville Coach Mick Price, who went to college with Sauro at Fairmont (W.Va.) Stale, recalls another numerous incident in the game. "We had the one girl (Kathy) dead at the plate and our catcher, Mike Sole, was watting to tag her," Price said. "But when he realized, that it was a girl coming home, he wasn't sure where to lag her. So when she went by, he just kind nf brushed her with the ball." Sauro said some of the Hor-nels' opponents have deliberately tried to make things rough on his female fielders but they suinetimes get a surprise. "We were playing Manning-ton, and one of thrir players tried to knock Linda down on a tag play." said Sauro, whose voung team is currently 2-S.

"But she got right back up and tagged him out." Sauro admits he had "some qualms" before the beginning of the season about having a couple of girls on his baseball team, bul says he's over that now. "I (bought for a while (his might he fhe demise of our team, but tat nut true at all," Sauro said. "The two girls haven't been any different to me than a couple of guys. The novelty is over now and now it's become commonplace, In fact, they've helped give our program some new life. They bolh played little league, so this is nothing new to them.

"I guess you might say we've got a couple of diamonds in the rough." Sauro admits, however, he has had to change his baseball vocabulary. "I can't say 'attaboy', so I just say 'attagirl'," he chuckled. "I also make sure I don't say we have two men out. 1 just say we have a couple of outs."
