M. RAYMOND STONE U.S. investigator, musician, UM booster By AMINDA MARQUES GONZALEZ Herald Staff Writer M. Raymond Stone, a career government investigator and talented musician who turned to charity in his retirement, died Wednesday from post-surgical complications. He was 82.

"He was a delightful man, a warm, funny person who seemed enjoy life immensely and fully," said Edward "Tad" Foote, president of the University of Miami, where Stone was active. "It always made me feel good to see Born in 1911 in North Dakota, Stone moved to Washington, D.C., in 1937 to take a job as a government investigator. That same year, he married Mildred Lenore Olson. While he continued to work, Stone attended night classes at Columbus University now Catholic University and earned his law degree in 1941. He worked his way up, serving as security director for the State Department's Agency for International Development.

Stone's department was responsible for conducting background investigations to determine levels of clearance. After his retirement in 1971, Stone was a security consultant to the director of the Peace Corps until 1980. When his wife died in 1982. Stone moved to Miami to be with his son Ron, a member of the University of Miami board of trustees. At the time, he was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

After 12 months of chemotherapy, the disease was declared to be in remission. Stone became the "cover boy" for a yearly magazine put out by UM's Comprehensive Cancer Center. "He had an absolutely unshakeably positive attitude about life through all the things he went through," said his son. Stone became a consummate University of Miami football fan, attending every game for eight years. He also became an active member of the Elks Club in South Miami, once earning the title Elk of the Year.

He also was a talented musician who played both the trombone and the piano. Stone is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Eliana. Services begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Canterbury Episcopal Church Center, 1150 Stanford on the UM campus. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the UM Hurricane Club, the Canterbury Episcopal Church Center at the university or the UM Comprehensive Cancer Center.

OSCAR MAMBER School volunteer, 99 By DONNA GEHRKE Herald Staff Writer Oscar Mamber wanted children to know their rich Judaic heritage. So for decades, he volunteered at the Alexander Gross Hebrew Academy. His specialty: recruiting students. Mamber died Wednesday after a short illness. He was 99.

He leaves a rich legacy of encouraging Jewish children to attend the Hebrew Academy regardless of their family's ability to pay. Mamber, as the longtime volunteer chief of the school's admissions committee, saw that children got scholarships or other help to attend. "He came from a religious background and was devoted to Judaism," said his daughter Helen Mamber Levin. "He wanted to see the religion perpetuated. That's why he loved working with children." When he was in his 80s, he was the oldest and longest participating membegin daughter said his special delight was being Aliyah chairman for 23 years and working closely with founding member Rabbi Irving Lehrman, who retired last year after 50 years of service. At the Hebrew Academy, Mamber was a senior vice president. He also volunteered at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.

Only a heart attack sidelined him but he still walked and kept mentally alert, his daughter said. In addition to his daughter, Mamber is survived by his son Milton Mamber; daughter-in-law Sandy Mamber; grandchildren Yehuda Levin, Steven Levin, Susan Gringauz, Mallorie Cove and Andy Mamber; and four great-grandchildren. A Naval Aviator whose career as a naval officer began at the Naval Reserve Aviation Base, Opa Locka in 1936 and ended with the closing of the Retired Affairs Office at the Naval Reserve Center, Miami, in 1989. Tour of active duty included service with the Pacific Fleet from 1937 to 1940, with The Atlantic Fleet during WWII and state side during Korea. Transferred to the Ready Reserve in 1947, he returned to Eastern Airlines as an airline pilot based in Miami. In addition to "flying the line" his prior experience in pilot selection and training led to several administrative assignments including Director of Flight Training. He was a member of several professional associations including the Washington Artillery Veterans the Naval Reserve the Retired Officers the Retired Eastern Pilots Assoc.

Died 2-9-94. Born the son of Sara and Glen Stone of Antelope Township, North Dakota, a farm family deeply committed to education and God. Ray Stone migrated to D.C. in 1937 to accept a position as a civil service investigator with the U.S. Gov't.

That same year he was married to Mildred Lenore Olson, daughter of a Norwegian farm family also of N.D. While serving as a Federal Investigator he attended law school at night at Columbus University, Wash. D.C. (now Catholic University) and achieved his law degree in July of 1941. In 1941 he enlisted in the U.S.

Army and served in France and Germany until VE Day in 1945. Returning to D.C. he spent the next 26 years in the Dept of State retiring in 1971 as a G.S.-15 as Dir. of Security for the Agency for International Development. After retirement he continued to reside in Vienna, VA.

and served as a security consultant to the Dir. of the Peace Corps until 1980. Upon the death of his wife in 1982, he relocated to Miami to join his son, Ronald G. Stone, an insurance executive in Coral Gables who graduated from the Univ. of Miami and served as Pres.

of the of Nat. Alumni Assoc. and as a member of its Board of Trustees from 1981 to present. Ray Stone became immediately active in the BPOE Lodge in South Miami, where he served as Secretary for several years and was named Elk of the Year. He also became somewhat of a mascot for the of athletics, attending all home and away football games for 8 years traveling, always on the team plane, and never missing a home baseball game.

He arrived in Miami in 1982 as a severe prostate cancer patient and became one of the "miracle" cases of the of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Ctr. once serving as the "Cover Boy" of their Nat. Publication, fully attired in Hurricane colors. All medical personnel whoever attended him through his many illnesses, and all of his many dear friends will always remember him for his incredibly positive approach to life and his always present sense of humor, and cigar. He was a loyal and active parishioner of the Episcopal Church Center at the of M.

He is survived by his son, Ron, and daughter-in-law Ely. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Univ. of Miami Hurricane Club, Canterbury Episcopal Church Univ of Miami and the Univ. of Miami Comp. Cancer Ctr.
