Dade County Circuit Court baililT James Walker was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder Thursday in the same courthouse where he once worked The prosecution said it would seek the death penalty Walker was found guilty or kid- napping and killing his former lover Joann Jones 29 and their child Quinton 17 months According to prosecutors Walker had wanted Jones to abort the child and retirement died Wednesday from post-surgical complications He was 82 was a delightful man a warm funny person who seemed to enjoy life immensely and said Edward Foote president of the University of Miami where Stone was active always made me feel good to see Bom in 191 1 in North Dakota Stone moved to Washington DC in 1937 to take a job as a government investigator That same year he married Mildred Lenore Olson While he continued to work Stone attended night classes at Columbus University now Catholic University and earned his law degree in 1941 He worked his way up serving as security director for the State Agency for International Development department was responsible for conducting background investigations to determine levels of clearance After his retirement in 1971 Stone was a security consultant to the director of the Peace Corps until 1980 When his wife died in 1982 Stone moved to Miami to be with his son Ron a member of the University of Miami board of trustees At the time he was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer After 12 months of chemotherapy the disease was declared to be in remission Stone became the for a yearly magazine put out by Comprehensive Cancer Center had an absolutely unshak-eably positive attitude about life through all the things he went said his son Stone became a consummate University of Miami football fan attending every game for eight years He also became an active member of the Elks Club in South Miami once earning the title Elk of the Year He also was a talented musician who played both the trombone and the piano Stone is Oscar Mamber wanted children to know their rich Judaic heritage So for decades he volunteered at the Alexander Gross Hebrew Academy His specialty: recruiting students Mamber died Wednesday after a short illness He was 99 He leaves a rich legacy of encouraging Jewish children to attend the Hebrew Academy regardless of their ability to pay Mamber as the longtime volunteer chief of the admissions
