SMITH Chelation therapy relected House defeats intravenous acid treatment Now ve GLENN 'Now 2 Locations CURTIS 929 Henderson 3605 Lancaster (Jocksboro Hwy) (Across From Stripling-Coes( 877-0929 531-3112 Horses vie foie 150000 in futurity finals Saturday The second annual Texas Reined Cowhorse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity finals will be at 7 pm Saturday in Will Rogers Coliseum with the best 15 of a field 0183 horses vying for the championship and $150000 in prize money The contest is divided into three classes herd cutting reining and cow or fence work Going into the finals the top three horses are 13irds Prescription Wombats Pale Face and Doe's Ruby Girl The horses in the futurity are 4yearolds and have been trained to compete using snaffle bits Jack Brainard the association's president said Snaffle bits are light jointed training bits having no curb and requiring the rider to use both hands Tickets cost $4 and are available in the lobby box office at Will Rogers Coliseum A Star-Telegram Austin Bureau AUSTIN A legislator who at least twice has been "chelated" intravenously on the House floor failed Friday to persuade representatives to pass her bill clearing the way for widespread use of chelation therapy in Texas Rep Senfronia Thompson D-liouston at one point angrily accused an opponent of the bill of "carrying water for the Texas Medical Association" which claimed her bill would endanger Texans' health The House settled the argument by defeating Thompson's bill 80-49 Chelation therapy involves a chemical called ethylene diamine tetracetic acid (EDTA) a common additive to such foods as mayonnaise and salad dressing EDTA also is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of lead poisoning Backers of the therapy contend it is useful in treating hardening of the arteries and blood circulation problems but opponents including the medical association say it carries a risk of kidney failure The US Food and Drug Administration has not approved chelation therapy for treatment of circulation problems and hardening of the arteries Thompson's bill not only would have allowed doctors to prescribe and administer chelation therapy for any physical or mental disorder Rep Bill Ceverha R-Richardson won approval of a weakening amendment allowing insurance coverage only if chelation therapy gains Food and Drug Administration approval "You are actually carrying the water for the DIA aren't you?
