I 36A '1983 FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM SATURDAY JANUARY 1 1983 Video play 1982 movies if" i aimed to please Art box office both satisfied Eft Nik i I I 1 Alii Aaaoclatod PrtM ET THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL an artistic and commercial success for a first effort (Rescue Terra I) The mostsurprisingdevelopment from the company however is its pricing structure Instead of the $3195 price usually recommended as the retail price by other manufacturers VentureVision put a $1995 tag on Terra And there were occa- sional discounts from that figure Most observers see 1983 as a -cleansing year for the home videogame industry also although not so much from a market saturation standpoint Part of the problem will be that retail outlets simply may not want to mess with that many companies unless they all have very very good games Watch for a lot of marketing mon- ey to be spent ty several companies: Atari Mattel's Network Activi-sion Imagic Coleco Parker Brothers and CBS Games and maybe a -couple of other companies Atari wants to maintain its dominant mar- ket share (some of which it lost last year) the others want it Watch this space this time next year to see who else is around In game systems! Atari's 2600 is expected to remain a mainstay in the field simply because there are so many games being manufactured for it (And with some help from postChristmas sales: The con- sole could be had for $99 in a few places) Look for Coleco Vision to mount a serious challenge however assuming that it successfully defends itself in a $350 million patent infringement suit filed by Atari over Coleco's attachment allowing use of 2600 cartridges Atari also has its big 5200 super unit on the market and will probably devote a lot more marketing time and money in the new year It has been using a soft sell on it to date apparently not wanting to with the 2600 for Christ- mas (Understandable its Christ-mas-season cartridges ET and Raiders of the Lost Ark apparently didn't sell as well as hoped) Mattel meanwhile may be in market-share problems with its In-tellivision True it has more capacity than the Atari 2600 and some of its games otter more detail and variety But costs too much Odyssey with a new more powerful unit programmed for marketing early this year may stage a strong comeback if it offers better graphics and detail in its games Question about video games? remem-beredastheyearof theshakeoutfor the arcade video-game industry while on the home front manufacturers started coming out of the woodwork 'At year's end there were thing like 15 different companies making game cartridges for the old standard Atari Video Computer System also known as the 2600 and also known as the Sears Tele-Games Video Arcade Two of those companies were in the Fort Worth-Dallas area Another company was Mattel which also makes the rival Intellivi-sion system The arcade market became nearly saturated with some major distributors finding that they were having a harder time making sales as every mom-and-pop grocery in the neighborhood had at least Tone arcade game available for play Meanwhile a declining market overseas closed of the route usually reserved for used trade-in games further stifling sales There could be a major weeding out of weaker companies and distributors next year On the plus side the games that do come out should be high-quality grabbers (most promising technology for the immediate future should be more 3-D games such as the spectactular Su-broc by Sega) Home games which may have had something to do with the decline in arcade sales apparently have not yet reached a saturation point but the sheer number of companies involved is not expected to remain the same Marginal companies which may have produced a winner or two but are now in danger of overextending themselves in a rush to produce more and different games may start feeling the pinch in 1983 One company not marginal but which did get into a cash-flow problem was Games by Apollo of Richardson which produced three good games in 1982 Space Cavern Lost Luggage and Infiltrate The company filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the Federal Bankruptcy Act late in the year but it proclaimed itself to be still viable just needing some time out from under debts probably mostly from an aggressive television advertising campaign on Space Cavern Meanwhile still they come: Venture Vision began operation in June from Grand Prairie (the Tarrant County portion) and had a corker By DESMOND RYAN Knight-Ridder News Service The movie year closed with ET- the creature that looks like your old baseball glove being edged off Time magazine's Man of the Year cover by a home computer But when you look at life perched atop a $313 million gross such journalistic slights are easier to take Besides being an apt symbol for aa erratic-but-prosperous year of movies Steven Spielberg's benign creation brought temporary resolution to the problem that perennially confronts a business with pretensions to being an art form It is not easy to make good films that also make money but 1982 was a year in which a gratifying proportion of movies that aimed to please rather than provoke turned out to be pretty good Two of them Spielberg's enchanting ET The Extra-Terrestrial and Sydney Pollack's Tootsie come as close to the perfect execution of an idea as anyone could wish ET is already on its way to supplanting Star Wars as the most commercially successful film ever made and Tootsie is a resounding success with holiday moviegoers Usually a critic engaged in the annu-alparlor game of compiling the 10-best list finds that his picks do not come within shouting distance of the year's box-office successes Such is not the case this time around In ET Spielberg who has never forgotten the fears and fantasies of childhood found a story worthy of his protean technical gifts Like The Wizard of Oz this is an achievement that will surely endure as long as people cherish the magical possibilities of the movies And Tootsiei I think will take its place among the classic American cpmedies ifootsie a sophisticated and timely commentary on sex roles shares its top-10 dressing room with Blake Edwards' Victor Victoria which proved to be that rarity a farce with something to say In their different ways these were two splendidly done comedies that took the low jftke of the actor-in-drag and worked wonders with it Such ventures are risky and like just about every other film on this year's 10-best list represent a willingness to gamble Richard Atten-borough's Gandhi now playing in select cities is a film of epic conception and scope one that confounds the old axiom that great drama cannot arise from saintly lives It is a movie that in its eloquence and vision is worthy of one of the century's pivotal figures Alan Pakula's Sophie's Choice goes up against a contention that the Holocaust by its barbarity and dimension cannot be satisfactorily encompassed with any justice in the drama of individual experience Director Pakula has found the core of William Styron's novel and made an emotionally wrenching film of one woman's tragedy Meryl Streep's performance as Sophie will make the competition of some other fine actresses seem like token resistance in this spring's Academy Award race Sissy Spa-cek's gutsy wife was a key component in the harrowing effect of Constants Costa-Gavras' Missing In Alan Parker's Shoot the Moon Diane Keaton as a wife picking up the pieces after a wrecked marriage did some fine work that was eclipsed by Albert Finney at his best Another risk that proved well worth taking was Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo The extraordinary hardships that Herzog encountered in making his film over four arduous years contributed to the unique quality of this account of a fine almost superhuman madness Likewise everyone doubtless told Louis Malle he was mad when he decided to film two men of the theater Wak lace Shawn and Andre Gregory talking over dinner The movie that resulted My Dinner With Andre turned out to be one of the year's most civilized and civilizing entertainments In Diner Barry Levinson recalled his old eating habits in the Balti-' more of his youth The talk of his characters lacked the urbanity of Shawn and Gregory but it was painfully accurate in its depiction of young men who refuse to go gently into the responsibilities of adulthood The major commercial successes of the year included Star Trek II Rocky III Poltergeist and An Officer and a Gentleman My Favorite Year The Road Warrior for Fire also did well though on a somewhat more modest level making it easier to put up with the unseemly millions raked in by such garbage as Porky's a revolting comedy for teen-agers and The Sword and the Sorcerer a moronic fantasy There were the usual dozens of claimants aspiring for a place on the year's 10-worst list with Porky's Inchon a sort of cinematic rendition of Onward Christian Soldiers marked another step backward for Laurence Olivier whose interest in the bottom line apparently prevents him from reading the lines in a script before signing on John Mi-lius' Conan the Barbarian proved a mixture of silliness and pretension unequaled in a competitive year There were many sequels and remakes Airplane II The Sequel Rocky III Star Trek II Death Wish II Amityville lb Cat People and The but none came close to being as fatuous and execrable as Greose 2 Friday the 13th Part 3 meanwhile joins the list as the worst of the usual bunch of dreadful horror films Any movie by Cheech and Chong qualifies as an automatic 10-worst entry and they did not disappoint their detractors in Things Are Tough All Over (Tough but not so tough that you needed to sit through this movie) And Robert Al-drich showed clear signs of having lost his directing marbles in the female wrestling comedy AH the Marbles Director Don Siegel spent his time wrestling with Bette Midler's ego on the set of Jinxed a comedy set in Las Vegas It was as funny as a night of mounting losses at the roulette wheel Christopher Reeve wrestled with his conscience and a nun as the ambitious priest in Monsignor a film that will surely be savored by connoisseurs of the awful in years to come And the makers of Paradise the saga of two teen-agers stranded in the desert were sued by Columbia Pictures for the film's slavish imitation of Columbia's The Blue Lagoon They needn't have bothered because Paradise a movie of overwhelming dumbness also lost at the box office Dining out xm MSAR 9 it i i il mix individual seafood cocktail sauces each diner is given three tiny glass pitchers on a glass tray One holds horseradish and two contain fresh tomato sauce that is wonderful Other first-course offerings are French onion soup oysters Rockefeller and poached salmon in dill sauce ($7) Salads served a la carte are a Caesar "royal' beefsteak tomato" and spinach with hot Eacon dressing The bacon dressing so hot that it cooked the spin-' ach before it could all be eaten never-" theless was excellent Dessert is G's cake with strawberries or chocolate chips The wine list offers interesting pm for dinner but call first Accessible to handicapped Maybe it's becoming a fact of life in the Fort Worth area but it's still difficult to swallow No matter how delectable the cuisine no matter how charming the atmosphere no matter how suave the service $22 is still too much to pay for a steak a la carte So is $15 a pound for lobster But understand Mister G's is elegant dining Service environment food are delightful and done with refinement After all the restaurant one of seven in the two airport hotels was named after the man who founded the parent company in Hawaii Wisely the small restaurant has kept its list of selections small enough to handle adeptly Most are steak and seafood Also on the menu are broiled lamb chops During a recent evening the filet mi-gnon was perfect That fact in itself in an age where good beefsteak is as rare as whooping cranes is worth the drive to the airport It was thick and cooked to perfection over mesquite charcoal (according to the menu) The filet was $22 The broiled giant prawns griglia were equally delightful but you have to favor garlic The prawns rich with butter were topped with an equally rich bear-naise sauce Like other entrees they were served with fresh vegetables sauteed in butter and herbs Other entrees included Chateaubriand for two ($45) porterhouse steak ($28) and broiled salmon steak ($1950) This is an American restaurant Just peek at the wine list Or note the potato skins on the menu It is a surprise amid the silver and crystal and tuxedos- to find potato skins They are the only starch on the menu and they are unusual Most of the potato is left in the triangles of skin when they are fried then mounded with sour cream and tiny ringlets of deep fried onion rings But with the other delectable offerings there is no need to order potatoes unless you can't stomach steak without them Order an extra appetizer instead And make one of them lobster bisque The crock of pink bisque delightfully laced with sherry and a bit of crabmeat is topped with puff pastry and served piping hot The specialty appetizer is called Seafood on Crystal and costs $850 a person It is constructed like this: large pressed glass footed bowl filled with crushed ice large freshly cooked shrimp and crab claws perched on the ice around the rim of the bowl and lobster meat and scallop ceviche cradled in the center The scallops were an unusual addition and they were fat -fresh and delicious The crab claws however were still partially frozen and thus disappointing The second best part of this appetizer (scallops were
