laid its reputation on the line then stood firm against SATs closing surge Saturday to protect a 2222 decision and its No11 national rank The Mountaineers took the Mustangs' early punches and rolled back behind tailback Arthur Owens' dazzling footwork to nail their fourth victory of the season It was Owens' substitute Dwayne Woods who tied a can to the Ponies' tail however scoring three touchdowns for the Easten Conference visitors They were short junkets of 2 13 and 14 yards but nonetheless effective in an attack that counted 461 yards in total offense THE GAME was riddled with to go with his three IDs West Virginia's other score came from fullback Ron Lee a one-yard thrust that broke the early deadlock and sent the Mountaineers winging Besides Whittington's 42-yard dash SMU's scoring consisted of a 34-yard field goal by Mark Embler a pass from Ricky Wesson that tight end Freeman Johns carried 80 yards into the end zone and fullback David Bostick's one-yard plunge in the last minute of the game By intermission the only definite pattern taking shape was that neither team could hang on to the ball The Ponies put all their firrst half points on the board after West ROCK Ark Arkansas continued its donination of TCU here Saturday night but it wasn't according to the predicted Wild West Massacre script The Razorbacks won the penalty-filled game 19-8 but not before an aroused Frog defense gave them fits and a revived TCU attack dominated much of the action Big plays especially by standout runners Jerry Eckwood and Ike Forte pulled Arkansas through Eckwood rushed for 162 yards and Forte for 84 For TCU Lee Cook connected on 17 passes for 227 yards and freshman fullback Raymond Woodard ran for 62 The real closeness of the game is told by the total offense figures 334 for TCU 338 for Ar- kansas and the fact that the Frogs ran 54 plays in the second half to 24 for the Porkers Arkansas' running power and its quick penetrating defense prevailed in the end but the Razorbacks could manage only a scoreless first quarter and a 6-0 halftime lead on two Steve Little field goals Two long drives in the second half gave the Hogs their victory sandwiched as they were among some long TCU marches only one of which paid off But for a key penalty the Frogs might have had the lead at the half After Little's first field goal gave Arkansas a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter Cook led the Frogs on a march from their 20 to the Hog 39 An interference penalty helped but Cook completed one pass for a first down and ran himself for another From the Arkansas 39 he hit Mike Renfro at the 20 and Renfro carried it to the 10 only to have a holding call force the Frogs back to their 42 where the drive stalled THE BIG PLAY OF THE HALF was a 73-yard dash by Eckwood who burst through the line at his own 18 broke three or four tackles put a hand on the ground once to keep his balance and finally was hauled down at the Frog 9 by Allen Hooker The Purples held as Tim Pulliam nailed Forte for a loss and made a fine play to stop Rolland Fuchs at the five on third down Then Little's kick was wide At the time the determined Frog stand preserved a 0-0 tie but Eckwood's run had put the Frogs in bad field position Moments later they wound up on their own one when Cook was trapped trying to pass Cook punted 51 yards but Eckwood returned to the TCU 34 and from there the Razorbacks punched to the 17 Then the Frogs held again and Little came in again to kick true giving Arkansas a 3-0 lead After TCU's aborted drive to the Hog 39 Arkansas came back determinedly They reached the TCU 44 but Dennis McGehee halted them with an interception When Raymond Woodard fumbled to Arkansas at the Frog 46 the Porkers regained the ball with in the half Forte and Eckwood ran the ball to the TC11 13 but again the Frog defenders rose up Scott O'Glee and others threw Forte for a four-yard loss Robert Dobry forced Scott Bull to throw incomplete Little came on again to boom a field goal for the 6-0 halftime margin THE THIRD QUARTER WAS MANGE TCU ran 28 plays to 11 for Arkansas yet the Hogs scored and the Frogs didn't The whole story was a big play for Arkansas and untimely penalties for the Frogs First TCU drove from its 20 to the Arkansas 24 mostly on runs by Woodard and Cook and some passes from Cook to Ronnie Littleton But Arkansas stopped them and a field goal was low and wide Then the Hogs padded their lead to 13-0 with an 80-yard march The key play was a 51-yard run by Bull which carried to the Frog four On the next down Forte drove over for the TD Back came the Frogs under Cook's direction From the TCU 20 he and Woodard again did the damage on runs and screen passes to reach Arkansas' 38 Then Cook found Ronald Parker in the middle to the 17 passed to Renfro to the 12 and ran to the 9 Then in order the Frogs were penalized 5 yards for motion 15 for an ineligible receiver and another 15 for another ineligible receiver That put them back on the Arkansas 44 A Cook throw to Renfro reached the 16 'but again a Rick kick was not good Again Arkansas' offense came back in Turn to Hogs on Page 6 yards in the first half and 158 yards total ruthing
