Gary, at 5, took an I.Q. test at Children's Memorial Hospital where he was a kidney patient and was rated a genius. However, later as a student at Shiloh Park School in Zion, Illinois, he scored in the 137-137 range, well above the average but not on the genius level. The school principal, Robert Fink, said when Gary entered kindergarten, he was more advanced than most other students in his grade, "I was amazed at his natural intelligence," Fink who was quoted as saying in the biography, "Gary Coleman: Medical Miracle," written by the Colemans with Bill Davidson.

"He could read and write, actually print, at third grade and was a natural leader from the very beginning. Even when he had to take a day or two off to go to the hospital, he never had any trouble keeping abreast of the rest of the class," said Fink. Fink teaches kids chess as a learning tool and learning chess was easy for Gary who played the game with his father and grandfather. The latter said, "At six, Gary could play.
