Montana broke its game open in the third quarter when fullback Les Kent scored from the one and quarterback Gary Berd-ing threw 41 yards to end Tom McMahon to push the Grizzlies out in front 21-0. Montana State used a "bunched" defense in an effort to stop the punishing Grizzlie attack, but Berding went to the air just enough to keep the secondary from rushing too much, and Montana moved the ball almost at will. Mike Wiscombe carried 25 times for Idaho to gain 104 yards and help pulverise the Weber State defensive patterns.
