charities and the onetime owner of all the and restaurants in Dade County died Tuesday of interstitial pneumonia at his home He was 80 During the five decades he lived in Dade Rudolph was involved in a number of fundraising campaigns for institutions such as Mount Sinai Medical Center the University of Miami Medical School and the Douglas Gardens-Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for Aged When the Miami area got tagged with a bad reputation for drugs and refugee influx in the early 1980s Rudolph sponsored a week-long campaign to donate a nickel for every hamburger sold in Dade to the For Me image-building campaign father's No 1 concern was other said his son Douglas Rudolph quietly helped people He was not interested in accolades He was interested in Rudolph and his son opened the first in Dade in 1977 Six years later they sold a chain of 22 Dade restaurants for $12 million In 1984 they started a high-grade fast-food restaurant called with hamburgers cooked to order and a salad bar with more than 60 offerings They opened a total of six restaurants took the company public in 1986 and sold the chain five years later Rudolph also developed Point View North in Miami and Sunrise Towers in Fort Lauderdale Rudolph was born in Pittsburgh and later attended the University of Pittsburgh He began his business career as the owner of several clothing shops there Since he disliked carrying large amounts of cash on his frequent business trips Rudolph dreamed up a precursor to what people now take for granted: the credit card He created the Trip Charge card that allowed businessmen to charge their gasoline motel and restaurant expenses He later sold Trip Charge to Club He moved to Miami in 1955 thought Miami was a great place to raise his family and a tremendous opportunity for his son said loved the warm He quickly became active in charity work raising millions of dollars for the Douglas Gardens Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged was also human and get Medical School at the University of Lausanne Switzerland He received his medical degree In 1958 Or Sierra held teaching positions at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Miami Schools of Medicine prior to entering private practice in Miami In 1962 During the course of his 30 year career he held the positions of Chief of Staff and Chief of Medicine at Cloverleaf Hospital Palm Springs General Hospital and Miami International Hospital For over 20 years Or Sierra owned the Golden Glades Medical Center in Opa-Locka For the past 8 years he has practiced in Miami Lakes He Is remembered DONNA GEHRKE Herald Staff Writer Harold Campbell Ferguson a longtime Liberty City businessman who built a park in the 1940s for neighborhood children has died of heart failure at Parkway Regional Medical Center He was 92 Until he was 86 Ferguson managed the Pacific Shoe Co a repair shop he started in 1935 when Liberty City was still mostly open spaces It was the first shop in the neighborhood of Northwest 18th Avenue and 67th Street Upset that black children had few places to play in segregated Miami Ferguson built a park on an empty lot next to his shop In 1942 he started with swings and a merry-go-around Later he added a sandbox doll house and tables and chairs taught us to overcome any obstacle we said his daughter Alvilda Mane Greene father was very wise He had more sense with a fourth-grade education than many with a Greene said her father took dozens of troubled children in the neighborhood under his wing teaching them his shoe repair craft He specialized in prescriptive Gardens Classic and the Douglas Gardens Senior Oluympics Mr Rudolph was very much concerned with making certain that nutritious meals be provided daily for all the elderly throughout all of our
