Pari DeuxPG-13 1:00 3:00 5:00 7:00 900 A sentence in small print on the program of the Ralph Lemon Company invited the audience at New World Dance Theater to this evening of works as a suite of dances that explore similar and dissimilar attempts at That curlicued verbiage intelligent but somehow repetitive and muddled was a metaphor for the movement layered into the four works New York choreographer Lemon presented in concert Two a solo for Lemon and a sextet for others shared the same title: Their Eyes Rolled Back in Ecstasy Both works were made in 1992 and so was a quintet titled Phrases Almost Biblical Folkdance Sextet the opener was made in 1991 All these works to some extent contained one or more identifiable movement phrases structured and restructured: by having a single dancer repeat all or part of a movement by having more than one dancer start the phrase at different times to create a visual Row Row Row Your Boat by having dancers jump into a phrase midstream by having dancers slow down speed up or do movements backward Most of these techniques are structural devices that were very popular in New York avant-garde in the 1960s and Lemon is of that generation and his formal approach is softened only by a awareness of the value of metaphor His solo version of Their Eyes Rolled Back in Ecstasy for instance begins with Lemon lying on the floor one clawlike forearm protruding from under his chin as an ear-splitting electronic drone assaults him and the audience The same image doubled in two bodies ends the sextet version of the piece In between a movement phrase has been carved expanded eviscerated turned Jose Jose live doesn't fulfill recorded promise In a word awful the only way to describe Jose performance Saturday at Miami Jackie Gleason Theater The Mexican crooner who built a career of singing smooth and sexy ballads was a horrible mess from the first song to the painful last note Was he having a bad night? Or are his silky deliveries on countless records the work of studio wizardry? I know What I do know' is what I heard and saw Saturday on that stage What I heard was a hoarse tuneless voice that cracked when it should have soared What he did to Te QuieroAsi (7 Love You That Way) his once-gorgeous duet with Lani Hall was criminal Using his two female vocalists as his duet partners Jose proceeded to muster minimal power the women' blew him away and slur the lyrics And downright sad what he made of songwriter Manuel compositions During his Secretos (Secrets) album medley which included Lagrimas (Tears) El Amor Acaba (Love Destroys) and Lo Dudo (I Doubt It) I covered my face in shame as he butchered every word But I alone Yes some members of the audience would give him standing ovations here and there but there were plenty of skeptics The woman sitting next to me a longtime fan who has been to many of his concerts said this the worst she has seen him And as I walked out of the theater I overheard one man telling his companion: he sing anymore then he should just
