into any shape he desires In coming episodes the space station will be near a a passage that will allow unusual characters to drop into this intergalactic Casablanca For viewers this looks like the beginning of another beautiful relationship with Star Trek To understand the brilliance of Berman and creation take a look at awful Space Rangers premiering at 8 pm Wednesday (channels 6 and 12) It is nothing more than cops-and-robbers set in outer space with the men and women reduced to macho posturing and tedious shoot-outs The sets the plots and the actors are abysmal and Oscar winner Linda Hunt Space Nine is daunting: Take us where no TV series has gone before yet remain true to Trek creator Gene vision please the throngs of Trekkers and pick up new fans on its galactic travels All this the superb Deep Space Nine accomplishes in its dazzling two-hour premiere Here is one of the finest new shows of a dismal season Too often series premieres are shallow hurry-up affairs that rush all the characters across the screen Deep Space Nine brings on its cast with panache and the series establishes Cmdr Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) with such poignancy that he quickly becomes the equal of Capt Jean-Luc Picard (guest star Patrick Stewart of Next Generation) This is remarkable But no less so is the first stoj7 a meditation on life death time even baseball Quite a leap for a new series aiming for the life-affirming profundity of Our Town or a Wonderful Life in its first at-bat The series hits a grand slam without the slightest mawkishness or preachiness The plot: The Starfleet commands an
