16000 in this capital city Kirkpatrick far outshone his highly-publicized opponent the Jackie Parker who is currently featured as an all-America candidate in a national weekly magazine The only thing close about the game was actually the score For after the Red Raiders pounded to their first touchdown with the opening kickoff there was little doubt The Maroons staged a mild rally at the finish and pulled to within the final seven points after trailing 7-27 but Kirkpatrick took over after that last score and moved the Raiders to two first downs while in the process of running out the clock Soundly Outplayed It would probably be safe to say that never before has Texas Tech outplayed an opponent so much to win by so little Texas Tech showed the seemingly true proportions of the game in its statistical edge which saw the Raiders round up 328 net yards rushing to the Maroons 80 and 123 passing to 97 while gaining an edge in first downs of 23-7 relatively poor showing and brilliance could be traced to the play of the opposing forward walls where Texas Tech held a tremendous advantage all afternoon Parker did pass for two of touchdowns but the vicious Raider forwards hounded him continuously and he wound- up with a loss of 15 yards on five carries Sides Gallops 37 Yards End Harland Wesley Tackle Jerry Walker and Guard Don Gray must be ranked alongside Kirkpatrick as individual stars but none was far ahead of the rest of the players Fullbacks James Sides and Rick Spinks gave Kirkpatrick some tremendous help with some powerhouse runs Sides finally breaking loose on a 37-yard touchdown scamper the longest Tech Coach Dewitt Weaver who with his assistants was carried from the field on the shoulders of the ecstatic Raiders at the end called Mississippi State as good a team as his club has met since he went to Texas Tech in 1951 It was the second loss for the Maroons who have also been twice tied and the sixth victory for Texas Tech against a lone defeat Tech led all the way the scoring going 6-0 13-0 13-7 20-7 27-7 27-14 and 27-20 The Raiders even had a touchdown nullified by a penalty early In the fourth while leading 20-7 Move 68 Yards For TD Tech moved 68 yards on 14 plays for its score after 6:29 although a bit of fate and Raider alertness combined to prevent disaster as the drive reached its payoff On fourth down and two at the seven Kirkpatrick ran back to his right as if to pass kept on running only to have Parker punch the ball out of his arms at the five but Gray grabbed it on its first bounce and Don Lewis rammed over on first try from there extra point attempt sailed wide The Raiders recovered a Maroon fumble on the 24 moments later but a fumble that lost 14 yards on the first play ruined that one although Kirkpatrick romped 21 yards to put them within reaching distance before State took over In the opening minutes of the second quarter Texas Tech punched 63 yards to the Maroon one before a roughing penalty ruined another scoring bid The Raiders were rolling and to be denied although a third-down pass to the 18 setting up a first down was ruled incomplete even to the booing of Maroon partisans Taking over on the 20 Parker dropped back to pass and was tackled viciously by End Dean White a fumble resulting with the Raiders taking over on the four and on fourth down another bit of alert play cashed in on the score Three downs had put the ball within a foot of the goal but Quarterback Jerry Johnson running to his right fumbled and Spinks raced back to the seven picked up the bail and took off for pay dirt twisting away from two tacklers enroute Spinks then converted and it was 13-0 The Maroons capitalized on a fumble on the Tech 30 early in the third for their first score using six plays to cover the distance with Halfback Arthur Davis making a brilliant catch of fourth down pass from the seven and Parker converted to leave the score 13-7 Texas Tech showed it had it ail the way as it took the following kickoff and maneuvered 76 yards on nine plays for another score with Halfback Norman Janes exploding into the end zone for the score from the one and Spinks converted to make 20-7 Sides Scores Touchdown Early in the fourth Tech moved 27 yards to an apparent touchdown Bobby Cavazos sprinting over from the 10 but a 15-yard clipping penalty pushed the ball back to the 16 The Raiders still back to the one but End Paul Erwin was unable to hang onto fourth down pass Substitute Quarterback Bobby Collins kicked out to the 37 and from there Sides found an opening off left tackle exploded into the secondary and went the distance for the score with conversion making it 27-7 A 43-yard pass from Collins to Halfback Joseph Davis sparked the Maroons to their second score with Joseph getting it from two yards out Then the Maroons moved 51 yards on six plays for their final score the big chunk and the payoff coming on a 31-yard shot from Parker to Joseph And that was the ball game although the Raiders gained three more yards 451 against the Maroons Saturday than they did in beating New Mexico last week 71-0 The summary: TEXAS TECH LE Erwin White LT Williams Wesley Lambert Gray Hurt Cen West Martin HO Howard
