OCTOBER 9, 1953 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH Winftetd Dam DeathTrap for Fishermen The WtafteM Dam wntifitres to be a death trap to ventoresotne fishermwr. Several people have met their death there ineliKBrig the two men who were drowned early Tuesday morning. A huge sign at the dam warns fishermen to stay at least 300 feet from the lower side of the gate, but is known that the water just below the dam is frequented often by huge catfish which tempt fisher- then to take risks. It is a common occurrence for boats to approach near the dam and throw out anchors while fishermen cast their lines into the tur- bulaent waters. Many large fish have been caught this way.

The two men who drowned Tuesday had followed this procedure, but it seems their anchor failed to hold. People familiar with the dam say that the water coming through gates causes a backlash of the surface water that draws objects into a sort of whirlpool which win (prickly swamp a boat. If an anchor drags, the pull fffl help draw the boat under. It Is regrettable that these accidents continue to occur now and then, but if fishermen would heed the sign, they would be perfectly safe. Coroner Ellis Inman, who owns the West Point Ferry just south of the dam says there is about 18 feet of water at the foot of the dam, but in many places below it the water reaches a depth of 60 feet.
