nr 12-A FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM Monday Morning June 2 1975 elston brooks SHADY OAKS 282-1441 "ALOHA BOBBY I ROSE" PG' I "THE REIVERS" EE I Slav McQuMn 'PG' I I gTr "a -v Jerry's 'g4 Art Flick Pi Sgl ADULT JsJJ YfSEATEfS The Ultimate Comedy They met at the funeral of a perfect stranger From then on things got perfectly stranger and stranger PVawaunl Pictures hetenri HAROLD and MAUDE fiaii -fa 1 RUTH GORDON BUDCORT SO I PG 6:05 7:45 930 THE 1 1 BODY TB rv club 1 1 1 513 Main BH (DOWNTOWN) IJU 1 CHRISTINE VERDUE SL HOrul I i AND HER SNAKES ISSflLw 4 A i "illlMmlBJl hum mil III ill UJIJ I iMiyWIM" i -Tin- imm iirtifgTTTrirMiiiMTnii iimirftErrttTrrm i ITs Aim I EBIv Twitim $150 Twilite' 5-45-6: jl5Q Mike Shropshire reports Ranger action daily in the Star-Telegram V1NGIIH AnrmmiA 6:00 8:15 VAV Twilil 5 50 GENERAL CINEMA CORPORATION S125 TIL 2:00 PMotSTARRED()CINEMAS SEE Sinbad in his breathtaking i i 'French Connection no pale carbon copy In a season that will go down as The Year of the Sequel it's encouraging and a bit amazing to note that they all seem to work from "The Godfather Part II" tp yes even "Funny Lady" and now most emphatically "French Connection II" i There is obvious care being taken to insure quality and to restrict the carbon copy aspects just to the titles The attention to quality never has been more evident than in "French Connection II" at the Cinema Seminary South In our last episode you'll recall the Oscar-winning "French Connection" left us hanging with an enigmatic ending (perhaps that film's sole flaw) as the French dope-runner craftily evaded Manhattan cop Popeye Doyle and mysteriously walked away from the warehouse showdown with the NYPD I doubt that a sequel was planned at that time but in any event that ending certainly opened the door for one a door that actor Gene Hackman and director John Frankenheimer have gone through and closed in grand --style American in Marseilles This time Doyle the uncouth New York cop goes to France to get his man an American in Marseilles so to speak a conspicuous standout in any crowd with his jyorkpie hat and his 1948 Hawaiian tourist shirt That's £)kay with the French police They know as Doyle jdoesn't that he has been sent by his own department as jDait to lure the escaped heroin czar out into the open A fset-up Fernando Rey reprising his role from the original 'lakes the bait And hooks it Holding Doyle captive in a sleazy hotel he uses the tricks of his trade to make him talk With daily injections of heroin he turns the cop into a slavering junkie gets what he wants and then tosses him back to the French cops like a no-deposit empty bottle In two scenes of towering effectiveness Frankenheimer and Hackman show how they are the best in their respective crafts today One is a pathetic scene where the once-defiant Hackman rolls up his sleeve and tries not to act like it's a matter of life and death as he awaits his daily injection The other comes in a cold turkey withdrawal scene when Hackman ramblingly tries to explain American baseball heros to French cop Bernard Fresson It is the stuff from which Oscars are won (again) and Frankenheimer verified during his visit here last week that he got the dramatic effect after having Hackman down a triple shot of brandy 1 Memorable hrowowoy Frankenheimer's directorial touches abound in this his best picture in years The scene where Hackman belatedly tells a French cabbie that he has "his number" after suspecting he was cheated on the fare is a deft throwaway that is remembered Frankenheimer shies away from the trademark "chase" scene to put his man on foot in a panting race with a bus and a boat cruistng along the docks And his climax is startling not so much for the explosive period that says there won't be a "French Connection III" but for the abrupt "stage blackout" that chops the final breath of what is a remarkable picture The whole thing is so superbly done it almost seems ungrateful to point out that Popeye Doyle shouldn't have returned in his porkpie hat after he clearly lost it the night he was mugged in the streets and kidnaped for weeks by the heroin crowd In a word: Frankenheimer has made a distinctly different and equally excellent film from director William Friedkin's New York-based original And Hackman has extended himself for an even deeper performance than the first time In acting this is called "stretching" Hack-man and Frankenheimer should both be 9-feet-tall by now Wild animals though! extincf seen in Laos Shcwcoe HlGHWAV SOWT 1 A HWAMOUNT RELEASE B) NOW SHOWING!
