Horned Frogs and the Winged "Commandos" from the South Plains Army Air Field Lubbock were ready and waiting Friday night for the opening kickoff which will sail into the air at 4 Saturday at TCU Stadium The tilt will offer Fort Worth fans their first opportunity to see the 1944 Frog machine in action TCU opened its season last week in Kansas City with an impressive 7-0 victory over the University of Kansas and Fort Worth fans are anxious to see what it is that makes Coach Dutch Aleyer's eleven click SPAAF will be playing its first game of the season and for this reason the camparative strength of the two teams is an unknown quality It is known however that the eleven from Lubbock boasts a husky hard-charging forward wall which will outweight thd Horned Frogs 15 pounds per man And it is known that Virgil (Scat) Sullivan the gridster who was a star at Rice Institute two years ago will start in the SPAM' backfield Joe Eager two-year letterman from LSU will start at the quarterback post The visitors arrived in Fort Worth Friday afternoon and took a brief workout at TCU Stadium Railbirds who witnessed the practice session left assured that the Frogs have a real job cut out for them Saturday afternoon As for the Frog machine even Coach Dutch Meyer was very optimistic as late as Friday night "1 don't know how the game will come out but I do know that the boys are in good shape and I do know that they will play a hustling brand of ball" Coach Meyer said "That is about all I could ask for" rotals 35 2 10 24 10' Totals 29 5 7 27 12 'Batted for Sullivan in Attendance 1000 The Methodists will take the field to avenge a 20-6 defeat handed them last season by the boys from Arlington and on paper appeared slated to do the trick without too much trouble The Aggies still aided by Navy V-12s but depleted of last season's galaxy of stars may be lacking full strength two of their backfield regulars Jesse Burditt and A McClintock being on the injured list They were hurt in last week's 47-6 drubbing at the hands of the Tulsa eleven The Mustangs on the other hand were pronounced in tip-top shape Pre-game interest at SMU hinged on the expected performance of big Ralph Ruthstrom who made a name for himself as a triple-threat back at Sam Houston Teachers College and who came to the Mustangs after the Army gave him a medical discharge Cool fair weather and a crowd of 5000 were in prospect for the 3 kickoff Probable starting lineups: Poe- NTAC LP--Reuter Wilson Kotiarich Me letio McWilliams Rol 'wage' Cook 1 Dyer McClintock Cunningham uthstrom Allen Totten ace lineman would be on the sidelines in the Saturday night affair Coach (Pug) Hogan stated that the loss of Totten would hurt his offense a great deal The big guard suffered a deep cut over his eye early this week Otherwise the Sherman eleven will be in top form The Bearcats feature a power attack and can and will pass when the occasion arises Nine starters on the Sherman team lettered last year North Side rated as a second-division club prior to opening of the season has developed into the surprise package of the district to date They ran wild over Ranger 47-0 in the season's opener and came back last week to defeat a strong Stephenville eleven 7-0 on foreign soil The North Side attack centers around Dewey Jacobs who has displayed a world of ability in the two games to date Jacobs is an excellent runner and lie is ably assisted in the backfield by Rex Swanzy Mike Korolevich and Roberts As usual the Steers can move through the air and it was a pass that gave them their 7-0 victory over Stephenville Sherman and North Side both powers in the state race last year played to a 13-13 draw in Sherman in 1943 I a 3 1: I 3 1 I 1 Longhorns Battle Pirates Today Victor puts virtually his same "Kiddie Korps" against the Red Raiders with a host of high school stars to go with his nine lettermen and five squadmen It's a different story for Coach Del Morgan of Tech who has just four lettermen returning However his freshmen are what he calls "far more promising than last year The Aggies' good old fashioned ground game against Texas Tech's passing apparently is in the off ing for this contest The Red Raiders have been drilling hard all week on their aerial game while reports from A have the NW lux Kids clicking on Norton's intricate ground game Both teams arrived Southwestern's Pirates come here Saturday to open the football season for the University of Texas Longhorn partisans hope it won't be a repeat of last year's story when the star-studded Southwestern outfit using a half-dozen fellows who formerly had performed for Texas hung the only defeat of the season on the Orange and White All those fellows are gone this of them back to but the Pirates still have 18 men on the squad who boast college experience The game should either verify or disclaim the often-announced worries of Texas over its running game The Longhorns admit they have a good line and in Bobby Layne have one of the Vest passers in the Southwest but it's carrying the ball that has caused Coach Bible the most concern A crowd of 14000 is forecast for the game Probable starting lineups
