Lucero. dial unKm Misfortune haunts robbery victim By DAN HENDRICKS Sun Staff Wnler An ironic twist of fate may have dampened the spirit of Christmas People throughout the valley responded to the plight of Sarah Kuhn, whose purse with approximately $500 inside, was stolen from the front seat of her car last week. However, all of the contributions that people have sent to her at 16352 Athol St.

in Fontana have been taken back- to the post office marked "Return to Sender." Dorothy and George Arnel, the people with whom Kuhn is temporarily staying, said they didn't think of notifying the post office of the two different names at their address. Therefore, their postman, unfamiliar with the situation, didn't leave any mail addressed to Sarah Kuhn. The Arnel's notified the post office's main branch in Fontana about the situation early Friday afternoon, but an employee there told them nothing could be done about the mail that had been returned to the office Thursday. The postal employee said she would notify the Arnel's carrier to deliver any mail addressed to Sarah Kuhn but recommended that further contributions, or those that have already been sent, be addressed to Sarah Kuhn, "in care of" Dorothy and George Arnel, 16352 Athol, Fontana 92338 The problems began a week ago Thursday when Kuhn gave up her apartment in order to move in with two other women. The three could then look out for one another, her son, Louis, recounted.

Before completing the move, however, she wanted to visit her two daughters and grandchildren in Arizona. Louis said his mother had scrimped and saved for months in order to make the trip and have some Christmas money to spend on her grandchildren and daughters After cashing her two Social Security checks, she and her son set out for Kingman, Ariz. Just outside Needles, they stopped at a rest stop to stretch their legs Three men in a car parked near them waited until they were away from the car, then snatched the purse with the money and all Kuhn's identification papers. The Kuhns gave chase but were unable to overtake the thieves. Because they had no money, they had to return to San Bernardino Kuhn tried to get help from Social Security and the welfare department but neither could provide immediate assistance.

Lend-A-Hand, an emergency fund established by the Sun for those in dire need, contributed $100. "which helped" Louis said. "Then after people read about what had happened and offered to help, she was just so happy. She never realized there were so many good-hearted and decent folks around. "And now, this unfortunate thing happened it's been almost too much for her to hear." he said sadly.

By P.G. TORREZ Sun Staff Writer SAN BERNARDINO Mario G. Obledo, state secretary of health and welfare, is off and running for governor. He all but announced his candidacy Friday as he visited the Inland Empire. The day was highlighted by a evening-long testimonial dinner-dance at the Convention Center that attracted 200 people.

If there was any doubt that he plans to enter the race, large blue and white buttons and bumper stickers with "Mario G. Obledo, Governor, 1982" were being sold near the door. In an interview with the Sun earlier in the day, Obledo said that if he had to declare his intentions today, "I would be in favor of announcing the candidacy." Asked on what he was basing his decision, he replied, "On the response that I have been receiving from the public and the pledges of support both from a strictly volunteer endeavor to pledges of financial assistance for the campaign." But such an announcement, if it happens, is not planned until "the early part of next year," the 49-year-old secretary said. Questioned about why he would run, Obledo said, "I want to be the governor of the state because I think I'm the person that's (most) qualified and experienced of the people that have announced and intend to run Even more qualified and experienced than Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, who is expected to vie for the Democratic primary nomination and currently considered to be the frontrunner? "Absolutely," he said. "In fact, none of the candidates that have been mentioned so far come close to my qualifications and my experience.

"The mayor (Bradley) is a good person, I respect him. "He's run a city, I've run a state- Fog blamed for accidents A pocket of dense fog was blamed for five highway collisions in-Chino Friday morning that injured eight persons and caused damage to 15 cars, California Highway Patrol officers said. Officers said the accidents, near Highway 71 and Euclid Avenue, and Archibald and Eucalyptus avenues, occurred between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. when the fog reportedly cut visibility to 10 to 15 feet. "It was a total state of confusion for a while," said CHP Officer Casey Bos.

"Most of these accidents were caused by people who were driving over their heads. Some were going 45 mph." Of those injured, only three persons were hospitalized. All three were listed in good condition Friday night, officials said. Variable high cloudiness with patchy Nsarly morning fog in some areas is forecast for the valley today and it will be mostly cloudy Sunday. But no rain is expected.

Valley temperatures will range from a low of 46 to a high of 65 Saturday and little change is predicted for Sunday. The forecast is much the same for the upper and lower deserts and the mountains over the weekend, with variable high cloudiness probable today. There is, however, a slight chance of light showers over the northern mountains late tonight and Sunday. Mountain temperatures will be 48 to 56 today, cooling to 44 to 52 on Sunday. Overnight lows will likely be 32 to 38 tonight and Sunday.

It will be mostly cloudy in the mountains areas Sunday. Northern desert temperatures today will be 62 to 68 with some local gusty winds. Partly cloudy skies are predicted Sunday. Overnight lows will be in the high 30s to low 40s. In the southern deserts daytime highs will be 72 to 78 today and Sunday following overnight lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s, Mario Obledo wide operation and programs for seven years.

The number of employees under my jurisdiction exceed his. The budget I handle overshadows bis by billions of dollars." Obledo, who weeks age said he needed $1 million to run a credible campaign, commented that "there's been pledges that would exceed that amount of money." He quickly added, "I think one of the major issues to be addressed now is this problem of identity and image throughout the state and that's why we've been doing extensive traveling to find out if indeed the support is solid." The secretary's low name identification among voters, he said, is not a problem because "it's very easy to get known throughout the state. It takes 24 hours, really, with a media blitz, and your name is identified." Obledo, who has never run for an elective office, spent Friday at City Hall talking with Mayor W.R. (Continued from B-l) ese was a soldier in the South Vietnamese Army. The second incident occurred months later when Lucero was assigned to collect bodies so they could be processed and returned to the S.

Conolley said Lucero was particularly affected by two bodies: one that had been submerged in a rice paddy and was badly decomposed, and another that fell apart in his hands while he was putting it in a "body bag." The psychologist stressed that Lucero has six classic signs of Post Vietnam Syndrome: Vivid flashbacks, which in Lucero's case focus on being wounded and the grotesque details of bagging bodies. Long-lasting emotional numbing that, among other things, helped ruin his marriage and made him feel even more distant from his family. Sleep disturbances. Survival guilt, which Conolley described as a nagging feeling of, "Why did I survive when the guy next to me did not?" Memory impairment, which makes it difficult to concentrate or remember details. Avoidance of activities that arouse memories of war experiences.

Under the last category, Conolley said Lucero didn't discuss the war with his family, avoided TV programs about the war and didn't seek out other veterans or mental health experts. Vietnam severely affected Lucero long before the killings, Conolley emphasized. Lucero's marriage was a graphic example, the doctor said. The wedding came soon after Lucero left the Army, and Lucero ultimately "sabotaged" the marriage, he explained. The doctor also noted that Lucero's wife had asked her husband to seek help and Lucero refused.

Early on the day of the murders, Lucero's wife and young son went to Vista to visit relatives. At the time, Lucero worried that the three or four day visit would turn into the end of his marriage, Conolley said. "That set the mood for the day," he claimed. The motive for the killings has never been determined. Conolley told the jury Lucero simply doesn't remember what happened.

The doctor claimed that the actual decision to kill the children was preceded by a flashback that was triggered by the goose's honking and the sound of a sheriff's helicopter that was searching for the youngsters. The drivers distributed the cards to make money on the side," D'Amico said. Deputies, who have been investigating the bookmaking rings for the past two months, issued 12 search warrants Thursday and Friday on trucks and residences in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. They seized a number of football cards and stubs and impounded seven catering trucks. D'Amico said evidence obtained from the search warrants will be used for further investigations. Arrested for investigation of bookmaking were: Dennis Guida, 42, 10997 California Redlands; Supachai "Tommy" Tabornmas, 32, 3353 Clifton Highland; Paige Luzier, 24, Forest Falls; Robert Wayne Murry, 32, 10016 Elwood Fontana; Robert McClarnam, 51, 249 W.

The arrests signaled the second crackdown on at least three major bookmaking rings that have reportedly netted $1.75 million a year, deputies said. Last month, deputies from the Sheriff's Narcotics and Selective Investigations Division arrested 14 major figures in those rings. "We already took on the upper levels of the operations," said Sgt. Felix D'Amico.

"Now we're cleaning up the lower end." D'Amico said the drivers are suspected of distributing the betting cards to the regular customers along their routes in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The catering service for which they drove, was not implicated in the investigation. He's been Santa (Continued from B-l) recovering from one of many operations she has endured to correct numerous congenital handicaps. Doctors believe Mary, whose parents are genetically similar, inherited all her parents' recessive traits. The result was serious, multiple handicaps.

Mary, who a nurse said had been chattering all day, reacted with awed silence to Santa's visit and the related hubbub. But later, she asked to have her picture taken with "Rudolph," who is actually Santa's chauffeur. (Windsor Limousines of Anaheim donates Santa's transportation and Kamar International contributes the stuffed animals that fill his toy bag.) Santa's most enthusiastic reception came from the older children "Hi, Santa!" "All right, Santa Claus!" and from the hospital staff, who gave him a cookie and some Christmas wishes and even danced with him. He responded with a constant, cheerful dialogue that usually ended with, "Merry Christmas and watch me tonight on Channel 5." His thick, curly, white beard is real, he assured the nurses before anyone had a chance to give it a tug. As George descended in an elevator (Santa's he confided, "Visiting the hospitals has always been emotional for me.
