kicking a 28-yard field goal in the last 10 seconds to had University of Texas 17- 15 before 60000 breathless foot-1 ball fans here Saturday It was a do-or-die chance The ball rested on the 10-yard line i on the short white stripe mark- i3 ing the 16 and two thirds paces i from the right side line There was time for one play I 1 rin mnre An aroused and furious i' Longhorn defense had just foiled a desperate pass attempt and for i an instant it seemed this ended 1 the ball game thwarting a long i Rice advance that had carried 79 yards in the remaining seven minutes i But the spinning clock stopped' of course after the incompletion leaving those 10 ticks Tobin Rote Rice's regular quarterback who sat it out the last half raced on to the field Froggy went 1 hack and eyed the goal Rote as-1 sumed his kneeling position preparatory to taking the snap I Froggy reached over to pat 1 Rote on the back Then the lines- men knuckled down here came the snap Rote handled it smartly 1 Williams swung his long right leg and flopped his hi hands As the Rice line fought off the snarl- ing white-shined Longhorns the ball sailed goalward in a long shallnw arc and after what eemed an eternity Referee Whitey Raecus signalled "field goal" 1 The pent-up tension on side lines and stands exploded then 1 Rice players and cheer-leaders i rushing on the field to hoist 1 Williams on their shoulders Others too were hugged a pounded in a full-fledged sictory celebration which required 'some doing to check by officials for the last play the Longhorns rightfully had coming Texas Trys One Too With order finally restored the Owls lined up for the kickoff but in his joy Big Joe Watson al- most missed the ball kicked it a mere three feet and a Rice man recovered The ball was awarded to Texas and Ben Tompkins was sent in to try for the field thin hope that would bave required 63 yards of carry The wind may have been more of an aid than it appeared hut the ball traveled only about half of the distance Vernon Glass fumbled it finally knelt over it and with that the game was officially (ix er 1 Rice had the victory Actually the Owls won less than half the Lame cutting it much finer than they In BY JACK MURPHY Star-Telegram Snorts Writer Riding full throttle on the deadly passing arm of Lindy Berry Texas Christian University's high-octane football machine proved a point for the air force in storming to a 33-27 triumph over Mississippi in a wild scoring jamboree before 15000 celebrants here Saturday night Stunned by an explosive split-T attack that sent the Rebels ahead in the first to a 20-8 advantage midway of the second quer te embattled Frogs fought back with a fiercely effective overhead game that left the Rebels limp at the finish Unable to check Rebels aground TCU snatched its fourth victory of the season from the fire by throwing caution to the wind and applying the old doctrine that the best defense is a good offense 20-19 at Halftime Berry's aerial darts pulled the Purple up to 19-20 at intermission and sent them ahead for the first time 26-20 midway of the third period But here the game was just hitting its stride Thirty seconds later Johnny Vaught's Johnny Rebs went in front 27-26 and it remained for another Berry knockout punch early in the final quarter for the ultimate decision Berry's devastating aerial bombs represented the difference in this rip-snorting struggle of contrasting offenses The cool Frog captain passed foe three touchdowns (to Morris Bailey Dart Wilde and John Morton) and set up a fourth tally Wilde furnished the first TCLI counter with a 37-yard pitch to Bailey The Rebel split-T featuring swift hard-running backs on pitchouts and smashes of Fullback John Dottley at the tackles in its own way was just as effeetive as Berry's passing Frogs trying everything in the way of defenses never found an adequate solution 398 Yards Rushing Figuring in two long scoring dashes by Dottley the Rebs had a total offense production of 508 yards that included 398 yards along the ground The Frog flying machine ground for 429 yards with 278 spaces being credited to passing And the Rebels were sorely wounded by a string of cutting penalties that pushed them back 122 yards on 19 fouls Two of Mississippi's malpractices figured in TC13s third touchdown and another wiped out a 52-yard passing gain late in the third quarter Vaught TCU's old All-American was vehement in his protest of officials' decisions "I just can't understand the officiating" he complained in the dressing room "I thought I had seen the worst I just can't understand it It wasn't consistent officiating" Shaken by the experience of another comeback struggle Meyer sought out Vaught in midfield and shouted "What a wild offensive battle!" The two shook hands but Vaught didn't utter a word It I Praise for Berrthe supremely onfid nt was ce Berry who drew the plaudits of th ef'h ac Ps-Never at a loss to find and connect with his receivers when ecord 20-7 Ruins Cats '3' SIVi COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCORES I -f 4 1 oe-4'''''''' li i' i i- 4' :1 4: i oN-- '4 i l6'AWPIJP 4 -4b' 1 1 4 k' i I- "1 I i I i -'N 1 t'1 fli 1 4 1 S11-1k 55 7109Z ''''''skf l-: 7 r- '''''4' 7 '74 iii- -I ---i 1 1 ii I -1 oc1 4i- 4: i L- -1 1 'aA 1 1 i I A F1 ''-I ''4 i )': 4 4 441 t'''1 ZA240 1 ''1- :1 :1 ---N fi- r1 i A penalty and repeatedly suffered other stunning punishment from the officials but it is just as true that in the final analysis the Cats had offsetting breaks which would have if exploited balanced the hooks The difference was that they "blew" the Turn to SMU on Page 6 BY FLEM HALL Star Telegram Sports Writer DALLAS Oct COMMOT1 and popular story per- haps will be that the spirit of absent Doak Walker inspired his SMU 1'vlustang mates to rise up and surprisingly defeat the heretofore all-victorious Kentucky Wildcats 20-7 in the Cotton Bowl Saturday OlkiltE AT A 16-1ANCE afternoon but it is more ac- SAM KFNTUCKT 15 curate to say that the de- 06 a rdsFI'Z'at innendwIgushing fending Southwest cham- pions played with poise and tar -300 (17k77tride "0 fr 5 tor 74 5 determination to prove they Ponaltim No Vdse 5 for 1 are more than a one-man was that the Mustangs vowed to team "win for Doak" but those closest It was with no sign of tears or to the team said it was more a hair-tearing frenzy that the Mus- ease of the whole team bouncing tangs went to work on the burly back from the defeat it suffered and aggressive Cats and in due last week when Rice wOrt 41-27 course took them apart Instead on this same field it was with collective cold blood- Whatever the cause the Mus- edness that Kyle Rote Fred Ben- tangs dispelled the myth of Ken- ners Johnny Champion and shift- tucky's impregnable defense by ing squads of helpers first scoring a touchdown in each of thwarted and then finally all but the last three quarters and end-routed the team which had al- ing the game on the Wildcat lowed only one touchdown while seven-yard line running up 206 points to win It is true that Kentucky had five games one "touchdown" canceled by a ikiblE AT A GLANCE KAI 41 KENTUCKY 18 First Downs 1 tkg Yards Gained Rushing 125 Yards Gained Passing US it of 14 Passes Completed 12 of 2 Passes Intercepted by 1 for 300 Punts 8 for 231 5 tor Xi Ponaltim sn Vilite 5 for 51 was that the Mustangs vowed to "win for Doak" but those closest to the team said it was more a case of the whole team bouncing back from the defeat it suffered last week when Rice wOrt 41-27 on this same field Whatever the cause the Mustangs dispelled the myth of Kentucky's impregnable defense by scoring a touchdown in each of the last three quarters and ending the game on the Wildcat seven-yard line It is true that Kentucky had one "touchdown" canceled by a GrOVP City 33 Alleghene 0 Northeastern 29 Brnoklyn College 7 Maryland State 19 Glassboro State 0 Case 39 Carnegie Tech Denison 63 Oberlin I Amherst 14 Wesleyan 7 Will i 11111 14 Tufts It ttiel Montclair St New Britain fit tgiv1 Thiel 21 Fdinborn State 13 Lebanon Vallee 34 Moravian13 Lowell Testi le 0 Clarkson 0 400 Westminster 19 Bethany Trinity 149 Middlebury 13 RP 1 41 Worcester Terh Connecticut Newport Naval 0 Delaware Lafayette Roston University sfi NTIll 0 Brown 49 Lehigh 0 Alfred 19 Hart wick 14 Swarthmore Ursinus 0 Albright Franklin 4 Maranon 0 Coast Guard Norwich 0 Long Island Agri 40 Liecester 11 tycoming 0 Brockport State Fordham 47 Syracuse Arnold 20 Kings Point 14 Vermont New Hampshire 0 Upsala 10 It Rutgers 33 Colgate 13 Colby flowdoin I tliet Morgan Stilts 35 11rseoln 0 Union 3R Hobart it johns Hopkins 44 Catitolie I Bates fi Maine ft lortina (Pa) State 4 Atiopery Nog 0 I tie) 4 tsv 1 rp rtk ttk SOUTHWEST CON FERENCE ITU 33 Stississinpi Rice Texas 15 $5111 Kentucks Savior 21 Texas AA 1St Arkansas 7 Vanderbilt A SOUTHWEST Texas Tech Arizona 7 Hardin-Simmons 721 of illowiten 3'7 Mc Marrs Abilen Christian IL Howard Payne $11 Snuthwestern 7 Shreiner Inst I Stitt 0 East Texas State IX Hardin 13 Lamar 7 Tarietnn State 0 Texas AA!
