HAL BOYLE IN PLAYLAND Palm Beach Society Isn't Reny Society Any More the compromises that evil income taxes have forced upon the rich In the old days you either wheeled up in your own chummy modified Pullman or else you jolly well slunk down to Miami Beach where you belonged None of these drive-it-yourself made-over coach cars when society was relly society The sole arrival on the grand scale was sprightly Robert R Young president of the Chesepeake & Ohio line who is cutting as wide a swath through Palm Beach society as he does in railroad financing I If asked to name six of America's bad habits I should mention pistol toting gambling liquor drinking di' vorce money grabbing and! r! eigaret smok ing Some of them or more - hurtful to the Joe— body than others but take away t ony one of them and it ' 44- - would im prove our I 't - American iz11 way of life" It would mean RAY the dawning 'OEM of a new and better day if some fair morning all our men and women on getting out of bed would say "I here and now give up all six of those bad habits" I do not know just what "millenium" means but in the sense in which it commonly used that would be it While fully recognizing the ex— istence and very hurtful existence of these widespread bad habits I joyfully take the sunny rather than the shady side Of the road' and look down the trail of America's future with hope and not with gloom There are lots of bad habits but there are lots of people who do not indulge in any of them If multitudes do we may be sure other and much Urger multiudes do not NVhere there is one man or woman who occasionally takes a social drink there are hundreds who conscientiously never touch liquor Where there is one man or woman who is a drunkard or who goes on an occasional spree there are thousands mho are sober year in and year out Where there is one couple joining the scandalous divorce parade there are thousands living together peacefully in happy homes and according to the best they know honestly trying to bring up their children as good citizens and worthy Christians Where there is one man or woman going from home unlawful: ly carrying a concealed weapon there are a thousand who do not possess a pistol and would not know how to manipulate one if they had it Where there is one man or woman gambling on cards' or the ponies or throwing money i away on "craps" there are many: thousands who do not gamble' either for profit or for fun A large per cent of those thousands would not know the name of one card from another nor even understand the cryptic meaningi of 47 come II" Where there is one man or woman culpalbly greedy ! for filthy lucre and sacrificing: the best things of life on that Altair there are thousands viho put' character above cash and who according to their judgment of what Is best want to use what money they get for the general upbuild- Ing of society and not for its destruction This they try to do through their families or their churches or other altruistic organizations or by personal beneficence: here and there or by financially1 helping in all of these important spheres I am sorry to say that the cigaret habit the numerical contrast of users and nonusers not so marked but I am safe in saing that where there is one man or woman wasting and worse than wasting money on cigarets" there 3re unquestionably very many who through economy if for no other reason do not indulge tobaccos dangerous toy pistol and i who never will who never will Thus you Ciin see that in ari flouncing myself opposed to these!
