THIRTY SWC GRIDMEN and five touchdowns He's particularly outstanding at snagging the ball when the opposition is crowding him and is considered a fine blocker An interesting aside: Stolhandske becomes the first and only player to hit the Stir-Telegrams "Top Thirty" all three years of his varsity career He was rated No 20 as a sophomore and No 5 in 1951 Curiously enough Larry Isbell of Baylor was No 5 in 1950 before being voted the best on the 1951 list That order of succession can not hold up however Texas versatile Ray Graves No 5 this time is a senior Sewell too has been a con sistent all-America choice this season The rugged 6-1 220- pound senior performed double-duty service for the Longhorns during the momentum-gathering days of early season and was ter rifle in both and defense Martin a defensive end of pie there were only two points difference between Sewell in second place and Martin in third This is the first year linemen have so dominated the top spots But it's not an election-year any team the margin would be 7-4 you know but simply because the writers strongly felt the three Stol bandske Sewell and Martin demonstrated the best football ability this year Stolhandske 21-year-old senlot who stands 6-2 and weighs 200 pounds is not a surprising choice to front the parade of Star-Telegram stars He's gained recognition on nearly every worthwhile all-America Wichita Falls 39-14 before 18000 sun-drenched fans here Saturday afternoon to enter the semifinals of the Conference 4A state high school playoffs The one-sided triumph achieved against a highly-touted Wichita Falls defense that had yielded only two touchdowns in 10 games this season earned the Texans a semifinals rematch with Baytown next Saturday afternoon Baytown beat Ray 34-0 here a year ago and automatically becomes host for next weeks skirmish Ray's shocking rout of the Coy otes here Saturday unquestionably was the biggest surprise of an already whacky season The Texans who were upset themselves by Miller of Corpus Christi 14-13 last week and who had been tied 6-6 earlier by Houston Lamar were 13-point underdogs to the previously unbeaten and untied West Texans Grab 33-0 Lead However those three early touchdowns gave Coach Bill Stage's red-shirted charges a 20-0 lead in the first 17 minutes Thus Inspired Ray ran the count to 33-0 late in the third quarter before the bewildered Coyotes finally regained their composure for two touchdowns that narrowed the gap to 33-14 going into the last period Any hopes Coach Joe Goldings charges had of overtaking the Texans were dashed in the second minute of the fourth quarter when they flubbed a scoring opportunity on the Ray 26 Fred Morgan a jet-propelled 180-pound halfback Quarterback Sonny Crisp and End John Ray were the two touchdowns on their first three plays from scrimmage Fight Flares Up The game had everything so far as Tech was concerned even an extracurricular brawl early in the fourth quarter It flamed stopped the players shook hands and play resumed on a more amicable basis Right Halfback Bobby Cavazos and Quarterback Jerry Johnson shared scoring honors for the Raiders each netting a pair of touchdowns Cavazos turned in the longest run of the day when he broke loose for an 83-yard touchdown sc4mper in the third quarter He had scored Tech's second six pointer in the first from the 22 Johnson scored twice on perfectly executed keepers around right end Charles (Sandy) Welton got the Tech scoring column lighted in the first quarter after just two minutes and 40 seconds On the Second play from scrimmage he smashed over left tackle and churned down the middle for 41 yards to the friendly confines of the end zone Cavazos also led Tech's rushers with 107 yards on four carries for the day He didn't score but 5-4 left Halfback Elmer Wilson captured the hearts of the fans and the admiration of the Wolf-pack as he scooted in and out for 71 yards on eight carries and runner-up honors persons are exactly alike" the new mentor commented "I believe that I should recognize that the differ ence in personalities alone would prevent me from continuing to do things exactly as Mr Meyer had and when the new assistant is hired Abe desires to have three scouts instead of two so that the man who scouted the opponent may stay with the Frogs on the day that they play that team Martin has a
