agricultural instructor from West Texas as director It has three main educational divisions of which the agricultural division is the largest with 221 students and 11 instructors The distributive education section has 60 students and 4 instructors and the trades and industries division 57 students with 4 instructors Persons supervisor of the agriculture division explains his program: students have a three-fold chance to learn First they attend night school twice each week and become acquainted with tjie theoretical aspects of technical agriculture and bring their own farm problems into discussion Then once each week there is a planned field trip which might include a new type plow demonstration or a pasture grass identification trip These field trips are so planned that their activities blend in with the theories taught at the night school The third part of agricultural edu cation constitutes a personal two-hour visit by the instructor with the student each week During this visit the student has the opportu nity to ask his instructor for help on any problem that he may have on his In addition each student must keep a set of records on expenses and income of his farm and an up-to-date inventory of equipment and prepare an annual farm budget On recent large-scale co-operative operation was the purchase of a portable spraying machine to spray more than 1000 head of cattle against flies Students have access to a completely equipped farm shop to repair the farm machinery and equipment to build such items as self feeders and cabinets They also may use the shop for welding and general repair work The shop system is under the direction of Gene Frieson but each instructor is also responsible for teaching shop The type agriculture instruction taught in the school largely is controlled by the season of the year and in general the teaching plan has this pattern: January is devoted to orcharding and gardening Poultry husbandry is taught in February and swine production in March Dairy husbandry and crop production are taught in April and May and June and July are used to teach soil and water conservation August and September are devoted to crop production and feeds and feeding The last three months are used for more feeds and feeding beef production and farm and home management Rabbi Accepls Dallas Call WORCESTER Mass Aug 3 OP) Rabbi Levi A Olan were faced with the likelihood of short crops Range conditions are now good to excellent and farmers are preparing to harvest a big grain sorghum crop and cotton prospects are very favorable Early in June the Arledge Ranch a few miles west of Seymour was so dry about half of the registered Herefords were sent to West Ranch near Irving Early June rains started the grass and at the present time the cattle they kept on the ranch are fat there is an abundance of lush grass in the pasture and the cattle will soon be brought from West Ranch to the home range On Wednesday of last w'eek it was too wet to work some of the fields Arledge Ranch grows considerable wheat some cotton and an appreciable acreage of grain sorghums The combine maize will soon be ready to harvest and promises a good yield They are growing considerable African millet and a tall variety of feterita Both of these crops will soon be ready to cut and will be used to fill a silo that holds more than 500 tons The feterita will be ready to harvest a few days ahead of the African millet Henry Arledge is rejoicing over the fact that there will be more than enough of these two crops to fill the big silo The young calves in the pasture are a pretty lot fat and bloomy on their milk The cows had eaten their morning fill and were resting in the shade by 9 There are some nice youngsters in the show barn that promise some ine of more than 90 miles and covers 7400 acres of land Land under irrigation or subject to irrigation that previously fsold for $50 per acre is now selling for as high as $500 per acre Jlany new crops and new sources of income are now available to farmers Alfalfa a crop that will pot grow on the limited rainfall Central Texas very successfully is now the most important crop in the irrigated area Around CO per cent of the total crop land is in alfalfa and yields of as high as five tons per acre have been reported from as many as six cuttings per season Pastures also are watered for the production of cheap and abundant grass for beef and dairy production Corn has become a major crop especially hybird seed production and yields as high as CO bushels per acre are not uncommon Ward irrigation specialist who helped develop the system Is raising hybird corn seed and is conducting demonstration and experimental projects for farmers in the irrigated area One patch of com has potatoes A small patch of Madrid clover now is being grown in the area and from aU indications it will be successful in the production of seed and hay The irrigation system is primarily underground
