played a memorable one-fighter at Blossom's Downstairabout a year ago and left local swingophiles tan- talized beyond their (OK our) wild- est expectations But the zoot-suited sidemen of the WJO vanished into the mist like some Brigadoon band leaving a gap that apparently is about to be filled Ppening tonight at Hip Pocket Theater in the slot long filled by Douglas Balentine's fine and funky combo is (if you're ready for this name) Big Al's Hot Dance Orchestra The personnel are a baker's dozen music majors from fabled North Texas State University Big Al (who by happy coincidence really is big) is Chicagoan Alan Gresik He describes the HDO's repertoire as "hot and happy dance 'music" To be more specific the group's primary book of arrangements comes from charts donated to NTSU's music library by WFAA radio station The arrangements date from the era when many radio stations kept a live orchestra on staff The band will play (starting at 8:15) before and after performances of Hip Pocket's current show Even If You Can Stop the Yellow Claw My Deadly Tidal Wave Will Still Destroy New York II The show runs this weekend and winds up next Friday through Sunday The call is answered with most participants donating their talent A casting call was put out via the grapevine and response was so enthusiastic in the local acting community that there are no more openings left in the first round of auditions A second round is being scheduled by producer Melissa North If you're interested and got squeezed out of the first stanza call her at 273-2798 (No kids or dogs please) Of pipes and pints By way of unofficial prelude to Sunday's Convention Center appearance by the Black Watch pipe band local Scot Leland McClure hauled out his bagpipes the other evening for a couple of well-received sessions at the Hare 'n' Hounds Inn the new English pub out White Settlement way Among the appreciators was Hip Pocket Theater director Johnny Simons hoisting a pint of Cheshire Ale as he eased out of culture shock after the troupe's recent stint in Edinburgh Dan and Marcie Milligan of the Innisfree Irish group also were recent impromptu sit-iners at the Heal and bore the happy news that Silly Wizard a foursome from Scotland will appear at Nick Farley's Lounge next Tuesday The Lounge is in Dallas just off Oak Lawn on Hall The music starts around 9 pm and you can buy tickets at the door through a window Review that a dastardly crime has been committed The mystery within a mystery is between Jeff and Lisa Lisa is crazy about him wants to marry him and uses all of her wiles to catch him Ile maintains that they are mismatched He's fit only for a life of adventure and she's a society lady who could never be satisfied living out of a suitcase The truth is he's frightened scared to death of this woman who offers closeness when he's capable only of one-way intimacy He is the voyeur Edith Head did the costumes in this fabulous-looking film John Michael Hayes wrote the screenplay based on a novelette by Cornell Woolrich Robert Burks shot it The claustrophobic set designed by a team including Hal Pereira and Sam Comer consists of Jeff's living room the self-contained apartment complex wide open in the sweltering summer heat It is lit with a brilliant artificial-looking light inspired perhaps by the glare of a photographer's studio Rear Window is playing locally I say see it It's a great movie and it's a chance in a million to see a passionate Grace Kelly She was a talented actress as well as a beauty She had so much class it would be easy to overlook that underlying heat which Hitchcock let play in this film Another reason to buy a ticket is that the print I saw in New York is flawless and a good print on a big screen of a Hitchcock movie is a sight to behold It's great fun in the Hitchcock tradition 'Rear Window' offering view of the best of stars ARLINGTON FIELDER MUSEUM 1616 Abram anent historical exhibits and current traveling Its Hours 9:30 Saturday 15 at Sunday ViSITOR HOTLINE 332-2000 Call for latest events and in Fort Worth Sponsored by Worth Convention and Bureau By TERRY HILLER Star-Telegram Writer You may have seen Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window on television on the late show but it wouldn't have been recently It's one of a few of Hitchcock's films which have been tied up since the director's death Now it's been freed re-released so a third generation Of moviegoers has the opportunity to view Hitch at his best The film has been drawing large audiences in New York since its showing at the New York Film Festival Rear Window stars a charismatic James Stewart and a lovely sensual Grace Kelly Stewart plays Jeff a photojournalist laid up in his airconditionless apartment He's got a broken leg and all he can do is sit and stare out the window Kelly plays his society girlfriend Lisa Thelma Ritter is Jeff's nurse Stella and she's marvelous The photographer or director) as voyeur is the theme of the film Jeff becomes fascinated with what goes on in his apartment complex which he views with frightening regularity day in day out There's Miss Lonely Hearts (Judith Evelyn) who drinks her blues away there's the composer (Ross Bagdasarian) who is obsessed with his work there's the promiscuous dancer (Georgine Darcy) a couple of honeym000ners and last but not least the suspicious Lars Thorwald played by Raymond Burr Jeff notices that Thorwald's nagging wife has disappeared and becomes convinced that Thorwald has murdered her Lisa enters into his obsession then Stella catches it and the three of them prove to a skeptical police detective (Wendell Corey).
