into a coma that resulted in severe brain damage The attack left him an invalid and he has been confined to a New Jersey medical center ever since However one of Wilson's final stage appearances had been capturesl on tape and the new album consists of a recording of that show along with an interview of Wilson conducted by WCBS disc jockey Norm Nite Wilson is heard performing live versions of That's Why To Be Loved Higher And Higher Around Lonely Teardrops Ifi Had A Hammer Stand By Me Chain Gang and My Way Then with Nite asking the questions Wilson discusses several aspects of his career including the beginning when he gave up a boxing career for rock tn roll Born on June 9 1934 in Detroit Wilson won a Golden Gloves championship at the age of 16 and he tells Nite he'd have been a professional fighter instead of a singer if he'd had his way But he was pressured by his mother to give up boxing "I didn't want to leave (boxing) but my mother grabbed me by the hair one day and told me 'no more' Wilson laughed "I had a good record and I had won the Golden Gloves in Michigan 1 was only 16 at the time and you were supposed to be la" Wilson joined the Dominoes as Clyde McPhatter's replacement in 1953 and stayed with that group until 1957 when he went solo Many of his early hits including 1958's million-selling Lonely Teardrops were penned by a then-unknown writer from Detroit named Berry Gordy Jr who would go on to fame and fortune by launching the Motown label a few years later "It was supposed to have been a blues ballad and we recorded it as a blues ballad but we didn't like it" Wilson says of Lonely Teardrops So the song was rearranged into an up tempo rocker by Dick Jacobs "We got a good tempo going It was like a chalypso which was very popular at the time" Wilson but it's not a bad story" Wilson recalled "I was shot in the stomach I still have the bullet I still carry it It's in my back The young lady wasn't shooting at me She was going to shoot herself That's why we didn't prosecute I grabbed the pistol but I'm the one I that got shot' NVilson recovered from the wound and continued to pour out the hits including the 1967 classic Higher And Higher "They threw that song away They threw it in the garbage can" Wilson remembered "A guy had brought a tape of that song in and nobody could hear it was a hit but me They threw it away and I picked it up" When Wilson revealed that his secret ambition was to become a disc jockey Nite asked him which performer he'd play for an hour if he could choose only one artist His response was Elvis Presley "Elvis is a very good friend of mine I know a lot about him and I could talk a lot about him in a very nice way" Wilson said "He also did me a great favor one time I was in Hollywood Calif playing a club called The Trip and we were having a little difficulty getting people to come out at that particular time So Elvis came Out twice for me and you couldn't get in after that The people said 'if Elvis goes then
