A/U AIR FORCC RUM i \ i 4 6rfe7fc ^ W> FRANK AND ERNEST by Bob Thaves QUESTION: Where do they get the names for the comets? * * * ANSWER: The names for the stars, planets and constellations usually stem from the mythology of the Greeks and Romans, but the comets take the names of the astronomers who discover them. About five to 10 comets appear yearly. Most are too faint to be seen without a telescope, but the chance of seeing one bright comet during a lifetime is good. After the invention and perfection of the telescope,_ astronomers sighted comets and predicted the time of their reappearance. Halley's Comet, a brilliant heavenly sight wzA seen in 1910 and is expected about 1986. Biela's Comet of '1846 split. In 1852; twin comets returned on the same orbit. Encke's comet, a small telescopic one, has returned regularly since 1819 at 3.3-year intervals. There are many other famous comets named for astronomers. Recently, the Czech born astronomer' Kohoutek, working at the Hamburg Observatory, discovered the comet that has been named for him. It didn't •match the brilliance of Halley's comet. It is now rambling in deep space and will return again in 75,000 years. . 5-20 (Ann Kubarek of Auburn. New York, wins n prize for this question.
