That of course was long before Jackie Sherrill he of the MilliOn4 dollar contract and the two-year record of 6-9 arrived at College Station That also Was a year before Ricky Gann arrived atTec Ganna 5-foot9 171-potind placekicker from Arl ington lifgh School provided the Raiders with the only points of the game with a 51-yard field goal with just 27 seconds remaining in the first half "'can't believe that one field goal won this game" Gann said "When 1 hit that 51-yarder 1 was sure that would give our team a lift but 1 didn't think it would be the difference in the game" But it proved to be more than enough against an Aggie offense that gained Just 149 yards committed nine penalties (for 65 yards) lost its Only fumble and converted just five of 13 third-down opportunities "1 thought we played hard on offense" said Sherrill who benched starting quarterback John Mazur in favor of freshman Kevin Murray midway thrclugh the third quarter In the faint hopes of stirring his sleeping offense "But penalties took us out of any consisteacy" The Raiders weren't much better But at least Tech managed to get 95 yards rushing (On 26 carries) from tailback Dale Brown and another 93 (On 16 carries) from quarterback Jim Hart (the best rushing game of his college career) The Raiders also made the plays when they had to especially in the final 5:09 of the second quarter when they drove from their own 5- We finance dream boats yard line to get Gann within field range: and in the final 3:47 of the game when they put together three first downs to close out any hopes of an Aggie comeback had two weapons Saturday freshman running back Rod Bernstine and punter Kyle Stuart! Bernstine carried thei ball 18 times for 70 yards and also caught two passes for 14 yards and his 84 yards of total offense was more than half of the Aggies' total of 149 And Stuard did his part punting eight times for a 435-yard average Tech put together its scoring drive following a 46-Slard punt by Stuard into the wind that pinned the Raiders back at their own 5-yard line with 5:09 left in the second quarter Tech got out of that hole when on third-and-six BroWn ripped over left tackle for 11 yards on the next play Hart rolled right and ran for seven yards Then on second-and-three Hart optioned right turned upfield and raced 58 yards down the sideline Hart finally was knocked out of bounds at the MAI 1-yard line by Darrell Austin the sophomore cornerback from Wyatt who raced all the way across the field to save the touchdown And save it he did as the Raiders were pushed back to the Aggie 34 by a 15-yard illegal blocking penalty (below the knees) and Jeff Fuller's sack of Kart for a nine-yard loss on third down But with a 12mph wind at his back Gann salvaged something out of the drive and gave Tech a slim 3-0 halftime lead by connocting from 51 yards out The Aggies had their best scoring opportunity in the seoond quarter when they put three first downs together the only tine in the first half either team man aged to make three consecutive firsit downs to set up a first North Texas win over New Mexico By BILLY SMITH Star-Telegram Correspondent Mexico declined it So after taking advantage of a Lobo gift NT had a 6- 0 lead with 9:36 remaining in the first quarter The Lobos threathened to score in the first quarter when they drove the ball 56 yards to the NT 26-yard line Funck led the way He had 73 yards rushing to the first half With the drive stalled at the NT 26 Bibbo attempted a 43-yard field goal and missed But NT was penalized for too many men on the field and the Lobos had another shot at tying the score Three plays later Bibbo got another shot at a field goal after the Lobo drive stopped again this time at the NT 21yard line The 39- yard attempt was wide to the right with 5:25 left in the second quarter The Lobos threatened to come back with a second half drive marching 58 yards to the North Texas 21-yard line But a stubborn Eagle defense forced the Lobos to attempt their third field goal of the game Bibbo who had trouble planting his left foot on the muddy turf missed from 39 yards out North Texas retaliated on their second posession of the third quarter capitalizing on another New Mexico fumble A Starnes punt was mishandled by New Mexico returner Steve Sauter Sauter slipped in a mud puddle as he received the punt fumbling the ball North Texas tight end Mack Faggett recovered on the New Mexico 25-yardline with 7:29 remaining in the third quarter Two plays later on first down Carter connected with Tim Wasson on a 24-yard strike for the Eagles' second touchdown Wasson beat New Mexico safety Nick Johnson by a step to receive the touchdown throw ALBUQUERQUE NM Despite a one man offensive show by University of New Mexico quarterback Buddy Funck the North Texas State University Eagles capitalized on two Lobo fumbles for an 18-8 victory here Saturday Funk carried the ball 25 times for 133 yards on a rain-soaked University Stadium Forty-five hundrethsof an inch of rain fell prior to the game accounted for a soggy field and ball handling problems for the Lobos North Texas quarterback Greg Carter who completed four of 11 passes for 61 yards said the wet field hampered the Eagles' passing attack that has proved to be their most lucrative asset in their first four games "We ran safe offensive plays on the ground to keep from fumbling the ball" Carter said "I think we showed we have a fairly good football team I was uprised we were able to move the ball as well as we did" North Texas accounted for 209 yards total offense while the Lobos finished the game with 311 yards "This was really a big win for us We needed to get a win over a team like New Mexico I think this will give our kids a lot of confidence" North Texas Head Coach Corky Nelson said New Mexico dominated the offensive attack in the first half with 163 yards total offense compared to 94 yards for NT But mistakes killed New Mexico's scoring opportunities and led directly to the Eagles' scores The Lobos lost a couple of fumbles and Joe Bibbo missed two field goal attempts The Eagles scored when New Mexico punt returner Glenn Rogers fumbled a John Starnes punt on the Lobo 7-yard line NT reserve fullback Barry Dubley recovered the fumble Three plays later NT running back Greg Lee took an option pitch from Carter and bounded 4 yards for the touchdown NT opted to go for two on the conversion play But NT running back Sid Moore was stopped as he tried to go wide left NT was called for a penalty on the play and New 500000 NEW TIRES PRICED TO SELL!
