ARLINGTON EXTRA q1983 Fort Worth Star-Telegram JUNE 12 1983 7 ARLINGTON EXTRA q1983 Fort Worth Star-Telegram JUNE 12 1983 7 POO abaLan6OWIMMOliMiliddhonsomidAwootalsohamoaaalammft 1 Jo: COMPETITION COMING Loews Theatre to open this month on Collins Avenue in North Arlington Three new movie theaters in the works By MART! BENEDETTI Star-Telegram Writer Today if someone wanted to go to a movie in Arlington he would have a choice of four theaters However New York City-based Loews Theatres and Kansas City-based AMC Theaters are about to change that Within the year the theater companies will open three theaters that will add 20 screens For several years local viewers have had their choice of three theaters offering first-run films and one discount movie house All are located on the east side of the city leaving the growing populations of North and Southwest Arlington far removed from movie houses With the additional theaters in Arlington moviegoers will be able to choose where they want to see a particular film which may be playing simultaneously at local theaters Soon joining Arlington's existing theaters AMC's Forum 6 General Cinema Corp's Six Flags Cinema Plitt's Cinema IV and the discount Cinema I and II will be a six-screen Loews Theatre in Lincoln Continued from Page I have shown there is a need for another dealership in the area "It makes us wonder why they are doing this" Guenther said When Les Hudson manager of the Ted Arendale dealership was asked why they were protesting he replied "Why not" Hudson said Ted Arendale was not threatened by the competition Lee Trevino Ford might create Guenther said 16 acres of property have been purchased by First Frontier Properties for the dealership and other commercial uses The property is adjacent to the site of the proposed Oak Park Mall First Frontier is a subsidiary of First Savings Association-McKinney Along with the land Excel Investments has the approval of Ford Motor Co to open the franchise in South Arlington The only hitch to opening the dealership at this point is approval of a license Albert Salinas president of Dallas-based Lee Trevino Enterprises said he has his fingers crossed the license will be granted "We think the growth and future growth of the area will warrant an Square shopping center said Don Baker vice president of advertising and public relations for Loews When it opens June 17 the northern part of the city will get its first movie theater Next year Loews plans to open another six-screen theater in Southwest Arlington in another Lincoln Property Co shopping center to be built near Texas 287 and Interstate 20 "Arlington is a growing market It's no longer a little bitty city" Baker said "Ours is a theater of the future There is a certain excitement where there is a lot of people going and coming Nobody likes to go where no one is there so we are putting theaters in locations that we feel are the future" Meeting the competition straight on is AMC Jeff Schnabel vice president of operations for AMC said the company is planning an eight-screen theater called Green Oaks 8 to be located at Little Road and Interstate 20 in the Green Oaks Plaza "We hope to finalize the deal New car dealership meeting opposition other dealership" Salinas said "It's going to be a hot area We have a great location" Guenther agreed calling South Arlington the future "North Dallas Parkway of Arlington" Guenther said both Lee Trevino Ford and the coalition of attorneys have hired an attorney to represent them in the hearing before the Motor Vehicle Commission "We have several witnesses to show need" he said adding that the targeted opening date of the dealership is May 1984 Salinas said he expected existing dealers to say they already service the entire area and can continue to do so even with future growth which is one of the questions that will arise during the hearing before the Motor Vehicle Commission Harding said the issues to be debated in protest situations generally center around whether existing dealers adequately are representing the manufacturer and whether there is enough public interest in denying the application "It depends on the facts" Harding said adding that the majority of applications are granted II SiDLER-REED 'TypewriterPrinter For most personal feet and have 2000 seats Forum 6 in Arlington's Forum 303 mall opened in 1971 and Schnabel said the lobby is being remodeled and the sound system advanced The concessions area will be designed to give the most efficient use of counter space and fast service to avoid lines Baker said the six auditoriums in the multimillion dollar Loews Theatre in Lincoln Square will be larger than any in Tarrant and Dallas counties It will be contain 50000 square feet and each auditorium will have between 500 and 700 seats It will have a giant oval concessions center and a massive hand-painted mural in the lobby by artist Patrick Casey depicting a variety of movie stars There is an advanced Dolby sound system and double-wide screens Baker said depending on how movie bidding goes among the city's 010 theaters the same movie could play at two theaters But he said it was too early to tell how booking patterns would run and what shape the competition would take Schnabel said the increase in cinemas in the city will allow the same picture to play in two Arlington movie houses "The city has grown so much and Southwest Arlington is far away enough from Forum 6 so the same movie could play We are creating another area for film distribution" he said "As far as competition we feel it (more theaters) will generate new business increase the film-going audience" Walter Littlejohn manager for Plitt Theatres in Tarrant and Dallas counties said the days of Cinema IV playing a movie exclusively are over "We are splitting the business But there is so much growth the city can handle it" Littlejohn said Six Flags Cinema manager Bob Winkelman would not comment on how the five-screen theater at Six Flags Mall will meet the new competition CZ1!
