beginning to be heard and heeded more in the synagogue as well as in government the director of the Southeast Region of the United Synagogue of America (Conservative) reported here Thursday Rabbi Allen Rutchik said the latest indication of the trend here is the series of sessions which began last week with the college students of three North Dade and South Broward svna-gogues With selected aduns from Beth Torah Congregation Congregation Raphael and Temple Sinai (of Hollywood) invited to join them to listen some 25 students will meet again this Sunday night and then on alternate Sunday nights for the remainder of the summer to air their gripes views and suggestions concerning the synagogue The first session disclosed that young people are questioning said Rabbi Rutchik really know what they believe Nothing is sacred to not angry about the he added enjoy the fact that so many alternatives are open to them because of their affluence they have to set goals which require certain beliefs to THIS DOES not mean that they are abandoning Judaism the rabbi hastened to point out But because Jews are more readily accepted as Jews in the world today they feel free to be critical of the traditional faith and the way it is expressed in the organization and activity of the synagogue For the same reason adults today are more ready to listen to such observations Rabbi Rutchik noted and in Miami as well as elsewhere in the nation more and more Reform and Conservative congregations are naming young people to various boards and committees in the synagogue These developments represent the impact here of the package of suggestions adopted six months ago at the international conventions of the United Synagogue Youth (the Conservative organization for high schoolers) and AT1D (the college group) TO BRIDGE the generation gap halt the disaffection of Jewish youth and strengthen Jewish identity among the youth the conventions called for: THE REVISION of Hebrew school curriculum especially at the high school level to include Jewish subjects and courses on the Holocaust the Mideast the Jewish New Left and Judaism and sex PARALLEL INSTRUCTION courses in adult education programs and the Hebrew schools PLACING YOUNG people on synagogue committees to the liturgy and giving both lay adults and young people opportunities to conduct services and deliver sermons
