plunged over himself for the game's only touchdown Crain converted and that was the game The Aggies came back on one drive a truly marvelous effort by their All-America- fullback John Alec Kimbrough but it just wasn't in the books Overpowered the Line Kimbrough simply overpowered the Texas line for 63 yards on nine bull-like carries to blast down to BY FELIX M'KNIGHT AUSTIN Nov 29 Numbed driven into silence by defeat the once invincible Texas Aggies were not certain Friday whether they would just call its quits for the 1940 season or play in a New Year's Day post-season game The one foot they had in the Rose Bowl was jarred from its mooring Thursday by a gallant University of Texas team that simply gave them a country licking 7-0 before One of the bad things about athletics is that the satisfaction derived from victory doesn't compensate for the bitter sorrow that goes with defeat Doss Jusi Aboul the Best In our book the name of Noble Doss will always head the list of 13 Longhorns (that's all the men Coach Bible used) heroes that achieved the incredible victory It was Doss who broke the back of the Aggie attack personally making four of the five pass interceptions credited to Texas It was Doss who made the "impossible" catch of the tremendous pass that set the Longhorns up in business on the Aggie one-foot line From there Pete Layden pushed across It was Doss who did much of the fine blocking that repeatedly sent Winners Modest Losers Game The Longhorns took victory modestly and the Aggies took defeat gamely Old Army (the Cadet Corps) ijave an impressive demonstration of spirit and loyalty after the game the largest throng in all Southwest college football history 45000 The Cotton Bowl classic in Dallas is probably theirs for- the taking despite their defeat The Texas Aggies still are a great footall team one that had won 19 successive games before Texas reared up and the Texas nine deep in the second period but there the Aggies halted Kimbrough a tired boy tried a bit of strategy and threw one of his infrequent passes on fourth down but it was intercepted in the end zone by Doss for a touchback That was the lone Aggie drive of the day Texas drove down to the Aggie eight on another big assault started on Crain's interception of a pass but fumbled and End Bill Buchanan recovered for the Aggies to start Kimbrough's big march Too much Layden and Crain was the answer They shot through the vaunted Aggie line they threw To a man it held its sections of the i The Aggies boomed loudly last year but passed up by Southern California in favor of Tennessee were the choice of most Pacific Coast fans for this year's bid to the New Year's classic here Whether they were definitely eliminated was problematical Defeated teams have been invited and a movement is gaining headway in behalf of Nebraska Big Six champion beaten by Minnesota in the season's opener Vol Backer Clamor But the biggest clamor was set up by supporters of Tennessee and Boston College both with clear records The Vols lost to 14-0 last January and their backers say they deserve another chance Although Boston College is a definite possibility the general impression here is that the Eagles are already set for a Sugar Bowl appearance What Stanford University considered a certain Western choice thinks about it remained to be seen The Indians still have their traditional finale against California coming up Saturday and are not committing themselves until it's over The coast conference vote will be taken immediately after that game Stanford so far is undefeated All Al Masters Stanford graduate manager would admit last night was that Texas Aggies' loss to Texas 7-0 "complicates matters" Only Time Will Tell Layden and Jack Crain spinning away on beautiful runs It was "77" who was all over the field all afternoon preserved an la-year-oia nex mat stadium for many minutes after the last play stood bareheaded to cheer the defeated team and to sing the college song has kept the Aggies from winning in Austin since 1922 Will Decide Tuesday The Aggies wanted no part of bowl talk Friday but Coach Homer Norton said that after a holiday the Others Deserve Praise Layden's "fl" Stanley Mauldin's "80 Ted Dawson's "33" and Crain's "99" were other numbers that were always in the eye That touchdown! games during the season than on horse races failed to watch the post time of the Brown-Columbia tilt Thursday and it cost them plenty The two Eastern teams played a morning game It was a scoreless tie But many of the local operators had "six points against Brown" chalked up on their slates in the afternoon apparently never dreaming a football game would be played in the morning By the time they had learned their error the New Orleans States said they had been "taken" for S5000 by betters who knew the score Crain celled signals throughout and never missed a trick The Cowboy wasn't sensational but
