When invited to the game, the especially the senior unanimously to go mainly because they wanted to get the taste of a 34-6 lacing at the hands of Oklahoma out of their minds. The Huskers and Hurricanes put on one of the greatest offensive shows ever staged at Yankee Stadium by two college teams. The victory ended a double jinx for Nebraska. It was the Huskers first victory in a bowl and also the first on a telecast.

When the firing was over it was the fine balance of coach Bob Huskers that overshadowed A 11 American quarterback George Mira. Co-captain Thunder Thornton, a fullback; halfback Wilvie Ross and quarterback Dennis Claridge all sparkled in the Husker backfield. Ross and Thornton scored two touchdowns each and Claridge played his usual great game from the field general post. One of came on an electrifying 92-yard kickoff run and on another play he raced 34 yards to set up the second Husker score with Thornton Play-by-Play First Quarter to the Miami 20. Dennis Miami won the toss and JP' elected to receive, Miami laridge then flipped bolting over from the one.

The teams matched touchdown-for-touchdown, but a pair of two-point conversions give Nebraska the win. Both teams scored one TD each in the first, third and 4th periods and each of them got a pair of tallies in the second stanza. Mira, who connected on 24 of his 46 pass attempts including two for touchdowns, was voted the outstanding player. Hard running Nick Ryder scored two of the Miami ground touchdowns on one yard plunges. The lead changed hands 7 times and was tied two others in the great offensive show.
