IJNCOIA KSti MilU II 2 Eddie Beloin (left) and Bill Morrow (right), ace script writers of Jack Benny's program go over the first outline of the script with Boss Benny. Authors for the past seven years of NBC's top ranking comedy program, the team have launched the career of Sheriff Benny, Andy Devine, Rochester, Phil Harris, introduced Jack to his Maxwell, fiddle and "The Andy Gives Income Tax Tips BUT AMOS WISELY USES RECOMMENDED SHORT FORM Clear Cliaimels By HUBERT OGDEN Ever wonier what gives youi favorite announcer that voice ol authority which sends you scur-1 rying to the nearest shop to buy the wares he sells? More often than not, that voice of authority arises from a dramatic background. For many of ace announcers used to be actors. In fact, some of them still are. D.

Herein The Story Of How Being Funny ISNT FUNNY Journal Star Radio Programs KFOR Columbia Mutual and 1240 Kiiocyclos KOIL Columbia and Mutual 1290 Kilocycloi KFAB Columbia Basic 780 Kilocyclss WOW NBC RED Notwork S90 Kilocyclos SUNDAY MORNING Ask any radio gag crazy to be in the business. Being funny very funny is usually serious, nerve-W'racking labor, and a gag writer's work shop is a combination wrestling mat and torture chamber. Dead lines stare top comedy in face, and they seldom smile back. Being funny on a schedule, W'eek by week, is hard, grist-mill effort, and the big time comedy W'riters prove it.

Ask Bill Morrow and Eddie Beloin how they w'rite a Jack Benny show. Ask Don Quinn how he make.s Fibber McGee and Molly uproarious on NBC every Tuesday night. Ask Joe Bigelow about the Charlie McCarthy funny business. Ask Carroll Carroll about Bing smoothie banter. The answers are all the same.

It Helps. have to be crazy, but it busine.ss really Morrow Beloin affirm, when every Sunday night should be a For these top-ranking gag men, writing the Jack Benny script is a never ending, nerve-fraying, hard-at-work job. Immediately after the Sunday broadcast they begin all over again, being funny for the week to come. The new program must start with an idea, a central theme to support the incidental gags in the show. where the thinking comes in, hours of it, while boys toy with ideas, tear them down, to.is them out, and try again.

Often comes the dawn, with each dawn closer to program time, and no idea with it. Support Show. The idea must be big enough to support the entire show, as it must serve as an elastic background for everything else funny. It can be a party at house, or a scene with Rochester and the famous Benny Maxwell. Whatever it is, got to be good, punch proof, and thought through all the way.

where the jitters begin. Once an idea arrives, the schedule becomes more exacting. A meeting wdth Jack helps to the idea and two or three days typewriters, gag files, and joke lists develop it. Frequent conferences with Benny and the cast during the week put finishing touches on the smoothness and flow of the dialogue. In late at night hectic sessions tmall phrases and pauses are tested and re-tested, until at least three lines are discarded for every one retained.

What remains is a half hour show, a collection of incidental gags built around the all-important situation, a combination of setting and incident that only cold labored hours produced. Script Ready. By Saturday the script is ready for mimeographing, and after preliminary rehearsals, more cutting or 'A CRAZY BUSINESS' 8:00 8 15 8.30 8:45 News of World Orgnn Loft United Churches United Churches brings it to precise air time. Finally, after a full Sunday of dress rehearsal, the program is aired on the NBC Red Network, and the work bcgfns again. The pattern for other topnotch comedy men is much the Don Quinn, a former cartoonist and Fibber McGee and Molly writer for six years, begins immediately after the Tuesday night show, searching for the elusive central idea for the week to follow.

Simple Theory. theory for comedy writing is simple. Every laugh line on the show must grow directly out of the characters and situations at 79 Wistful Vista, the locale of all the McGee's doings. Fibber must be funny as Fibber, and not because of a joke. Carroll Carroll one time New York newsman and magazine writer, uses a similar technique in writing scripts for Bing Crosby and his guests on the Music Hall.

Guests, too, get the Carroll treatment. When Bing invites an artist to appear on the program, Carroll lunches with them well in advance of the broadcast, listens to their speech habits, studying their personality and background. never really talk about the Carroll laughs, I to learn a lot about Bing's Guests.

During the week he works this information into the guest spots on the Then, on Thursday, guests really sound like themselves. Writers on the Edgar Bergen hour form a small army of talent, with Joe Bigelow leading the fray. The gang meets for the first time on Saturday, sitting in a conference room in Hollywood Radio City, talking over ideas for the program a week hence. Although the famous Charlie McCarthy attend these hectic sessions, the center of attraction, and hours are spent perfecting the lines. These meetings continue throughout the week, with Bergen and Bigelow using the phones, and a stenotypist recording all the comments and ideas around the table.

After each session, Bigelow goes over the notes, sometimes re-writing far into the night, until at last the script is ready for rehearsal. Bigelow admits hard work. every chuckle oo the he relates, plenty of agony Involved.
