Johnson promised a decision soon perhaps this week "We'll have to come up with a game plan" he said "If fatigue is a factor we'll see if we can come up with something Maybe I won't play back-to-back games" Johnson's uniform is the fifth to be retired by the Lakers joining those of Abdul-Jabbar Wilt Chamberlain Elgin Baylor and Jerry West They were all in attendance Sunday for the 45-minute ceremony So were former teammates Norm Nixon Michael Cooper Jamaal Wilkes and Kurt Rambis Also on hand was longtime nemesis Larry Bird who flew in to be with his adversary even though a bad back prevented him from playing with the Celtics The Lakers couldn't make up for a poor first half Sunday and lost to Boston 114-107 After trailing by as many as 22 points in the second quarter the Lakers closed to 104-103 with three minutes remaining but the Celtics pulled away Johnson later disclosed he told Bird "Let's both suit up and run out and play the last five minutes That would have been interesting" Johnson's pregnant wife Cookie seemed at ease when the ceremonies were over "I cried" she said "It was very emotional It's the end of a career but it's the beginning of our new life together" From Herald Wire Services Lm Janzen sneaked a peak at the leaderboard Sunday when he stood on the 16th green at the Tucson National Golf Club in Arizona It showed him in a tie with Bill Brit-ton for the lead in the Northern Telecom Open "I knew what I had to do' Janzen said And he did it confidently rapping in a 12-foot putt for the go-ahead birdie then nursing the lead home for the first victory of his three-season career "I was so focused on playing one shot at a time I never really thought what was at stake" Janzen said after his bogey-free 7-under-par 65 earned him a one-stroke victory Janzen 27 who spent a couple of years on the mini-tours before gaining his playing rights on the PGA Tour in 1990 won with a 270 total 18 under par The victory worth $198000 increased his earnings for the season to $235578 more than he won in either of his first two full years "One of the hardest things I had to learn when I came out was not think about what a shot was worth" Janzen said With Britton who had completed his round of 66 watching from beside the green Janzen parred the 18th to win His previous best finish was a fifth at Hattiesburg Miss "My heart was racing" on the putts on the 18th Janzen said "but I think I was pretty calm considering Rookie David Toma playing about an hour in front of the other contenders had a 63 the best round of the tournament but it was only good enough for third place at 272 Miamian Dudley Hart the third-round leader slipped to a 71 and was tied for fourth at 274 with Ken Green Joe Don Blake Jim Gallagher Buddy Gardner and Olin Browne Colbert wins Suncoast Jim Colbert sank a 3-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to defeat George Archer and win the Suncoast Classic in Tampa Colbert who started the day two strokes behind Archer and three behind Kermit Zarley shot a 7-under-par 64 Sunday Colbert and Archer both shot 13-under-par 200s for 54 holes shattering the tournament record by seven shots The victory was Colbert's fourth in 11 months on the Senior PGA Tour Archer shot a final-round 66 Colbert and Archer each parred the first three playoff holes before Colbert won on the 17th hole "I knew I had to play well and think clearly" Colbert said "I've been playing for so long that some- times I don't appreciate what a privilege it is to play out here When you get older you never know how many more chances you will get to win" Parry outshoots Norman Craig Parry shot a 5-under-par 68 to overtake six-time champion Greg Norman and win the Australian Masters golf championship in Sydney Parry finished with a 9-under-par total of 283 three shots ahead of Norman who carded a 76 and remained without a victory since June 1990 Norman bogeyed the 15th 16th and 17th holes after Parry had tied him for the lead Parry who has won eight tournaments played a flawless final round that included birdies at the fourth sixth seventh ninth and 10th holes John Morae of Marshall Mich winner of the 1990 coache- gave Johnson a gold watch It was also announced that owner Jerry Buss will endow a full-tuition scholarship in Johnson's name at Magic's alma mater Michigan State There were also taped good wishes from opponents Isiah Thomas Michael Jordan Charles Barkley along with Pat Riley Johnson's longtime Laker coach Johnson said that when he and Bird are finally conclusively in retirement they would play one-on-one on pay-per-view "For about $50 million apiece" he said with a laugh Johnson said the toughest part of the afternoon was walking out there for the ceremony "I just started crying" he said "I walked that way so many times and now I was walking out to say goodbye It was difficult You never know how to sav goodbve How do vou do that?" Agence France-Presse MOVED: Magic Johnson brushes back tears during halftime ceremony Johnson who had tears running down his cheeks at various points in the ceremonies and had trouble keeping his voice from cracking at one point seemed the most overcome when he gave Abdul-Jabbar a long hug one Johnson seemed reluctant to end "When he hugged Kareem" Cookie said "you knew it was all over all in the past" So is it all over? Will her husband indeed retire following the Summer Olympics? "You never know" she replied with a wink "And I'm not saying another word" Johnson received many gifts DAYTONA 500 The King spurns nostalgia in farewell to 500 DAYTONA BEACH Richard Petty didn't have a script No one tells the King what to do As grand marshal for his 32nd and last Daytona 500 as a lap in a Daytona 500 "If I had been running by myself I might have had time to think about it" he said "But I was racing somebody That probably worked out for the best" Used to be he would be racing Bobhy Allison or David Pearson or Cale Yarbor-ough for the victory Sunday he was chasing Wally Dallenbach Jr for 16th place But Petty said "I don't think anybody could have done better in that car today in the same circumstances" That made it a satisfying race for him Petty will run this track one more time He's making the full season his Fan Appreciation Tour and that includes the Pepsi 400 on July the Fourth "When we finish up racing and do everything possible to make the team stronger for next year" when he will join Bobb Allison in the fraternity of owners "then I'll get more emotional" he said He wore his emotions on his sleeve when he climbed from his No 28 Ford Thunder-bird in victory ceremonies His smile was euphoric "I just can't believe it" he said "I'm shaking all over" Back in the garage though Petty refused to become sentimental about a Daytona 500 swan song in which his only leading lap was a ceremonial pace lap "No emotions at all" he said "Emotions only for the race today and wish we would have done better Petty spun three or four times through infield grass in the 14-car tangle triggered by three front-runners in tight traffic but he was able to continue He had not cracked the top 20 until then but he quipped "I wasn't last" when it happened "because somebody hit me from behind" No Petty said neither did nostalgia strike as he took the white flag for his final that speaks for itself The man won 200 races He is a tough competitor a strong rival of my father's for a number of years "I don't think I can make the 200 victories but it sure feels good to know I've done one of the things he has done" Allison is no more eager to be compared to his father a Miami native who still lived in South Florida when wife Judy gave birth to Davey in Memorial Hospital of Hollywood almost 31 years ago "I don't want to be as good as my father" Davey replied to a question about the pressure of living up to the Allison name "I want to be as good as Davey Allison can be" Five victories in 1991 provided a hint and even before his Daytona 500 triumph he had been tabbed as at least a co-favorite with Earnhardt for the series points championship this year day's tribute to father Bobby In a neat twist Davey Allison became the second son of a former Daytona 500 winner to win stock-car racing's showcase event The first? Richard Petty whose father Lee won the inaugural race on this famed 25-mile speedway Richard Petty of course went on to win seven Daytona 500s seven NASCAR Winston Cup championships and 200 races All are records and two probably never will be challenged Dale Earnhardt with five Winston Cup titles is challenging that Petty standard Davey Allison searched for the words when a reporter noted the father-son winners link to Lee and Richard Petty and sought his impressions of the man who has ruled a sport in which Allison has superstar potential "How can I express it?" Davey Allison mused "You say Richard Petty's name and driver he improvised on the traditional command "Gentlemen start your engines" "OK guys" Petty said with the power-plant in his red-and-blue No43STPPon-tiac already rumbling Sunday "let's go Crank 'em up" Among 41 drivers who responded was GARY LONG AUTO RACING the 30-year-old son of a former driver whose rivalry with Petty through the 1970s is legend And when Davey Allison won his victory became Sun- :) ')' J(J" A 4WW Setbacks don't shake Gibbs Jarrett's crash was unavoidable By GARY LONG Herald Sports Writer DAYTONA BEACH Joe Gibbs knew before the Super Bowl of stock-car racing Sunday that he had one chance in 42 of winning not the 50-50 prospect his Washington Redskins took into their 37-24 NFL JSP NOTEBOOK Associated Press WATCHING CLOSELY: Joe Gibbs coach of the Washington Redskins and owner of Dale Jarrett's Chevrolet keeps a close watch on the race Associated Press BAILING OUT: Rusty Wallace jumps from his smoking Pontiac uninjured after a Turn 3 collision Davey Allison emulates dad championship victory over Buffalo last month Gibbs a longtime auto racing fan also knew that a mistake on the track would be penalized by more than five yards and that it didn't have to be his own driver's mistake That tempered his disappointment Gibbs reacted to Dale Jarrett's unavoidable participation in the 14-car mid-race melee first with relief that Jarrett was not injured and then with the reaffirmation that "we're in this for the long haul" Jarrett tore up another of the new team's Chevrolets in a two-car tangle in a Twin 125-mile qualifying race Thursday The costly week he said may have come as "a rude awakening" for the new owner In fact one ramification may be that Gibbs sees real potential in his new team "The guys put together two cars in a short period of time" he said "and both of them ran well" Jarrett started 35th in the 42-car field because of the wreck Thursday but moved steadily up to seventh in the first 200 miles of green-flag racing Ironically Jarrett's inaugural Winston Cup victory last summer came in the No 21 Wood Brothers Ford that Morgan Shepherd drove to a runner-up finish behind Daey Alli-aon in Sundav's race It also was Allison whom Garrett beat with that No 2 1 by the width of a bumper in a side-bv-side duel in the Champion 400 at Michigan International Speedway MM Bfprnn who quarterbacked Gibbs' Redskins to their Super Bowl victory also has stock-car fever He spent the dav in Chad LirWe't pit They played high school football against each other and went to college together driver has burns on his face neck right shoulder and right arm He is in good condition Hensley fractured his right foot and two ribs in a single-car crash but his overnight hospital stay was a precautionary measure because of a -udden blood-pressure drop He passed a complete battery of test for potential internal injuries Daytona 500 WINNER'S AVERAGE SPEED: 140 254 MPH Driver car been cleaner All were run under the green flag and Davey Allison's 185854-miles-per-hour average was a record for the 200-mile juncture But a misty rain began falling over Turn 2 of the sprawling 25-mile trioval and the yellow flag began waving to slow the field Had it not rained the 500 probably would have shaken out much differently When the sprinkle abated and the green waved the field was bunched for the massive 14-car crash started by the front-runners three laps later Children benefit Pole-sitter Starling Marlin led 33 laps before he crashed and his sponsor Maxwell House came up with $33000 more for Children's Miracle Network The Daytona 500 is one of four events for which the coffee company has promised to donate $1000 for every' lap Marlin is running up front CMN is associated with 160 of the best pediatric health-care facilities in the country- Huffman in hospital Robert Huffman remained hospitalized Sunday night with burns suffered in the wTeck-strewn Goody's 300 Saturday afternoon But Jimmy Hertetey has been releaed Huffman's Oldsmobile erupted in flames when it slammed the Turn 2 wall in one of seven accidents in the NASCAR Grand National series opener The Claremont (NC) one ever passed him on the track thereafter He yielded the lead only five laps after pit stops "I knew that a lot of good cars were eliminated" he said "But there's one thing you never do in this business and that's take things for granted" That's why he went to the front to make sure someone else's problems didn't become his Ford power as anticipated proved superior from the start Five-time Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt had fallen well back of the front pack even before his part in the big crash dented the front of his Chevrolet He brought it home ninth a lap down Michael Waltnp's Pontiac did line up with Allison and Shepherd in a three-car train as the race wound down to a conclusion Waltrip's engine soured however with eight laps left That gave Allison a more secure feeling "I knew that was going to make it tougher for Morgan" he said "In order to pass here you need help" Two cars working in tandem usually have a speed edge on one car running in a clean-air groove Shepherd in his first race for the Wood Brothers never really got a good run at Allison and finished two car lengths back Michael Waltnp Darrell's younger brother bemoaned his fate "The Daytona 500 is cruel" he said "It's not a nice race And it was mean to us today" Davey Allison would differ It couldn't have been nicer to him Sunday unless that had been his father running second to him down there I mean it's hard to point a finger at anybody but Irvan took heat last year for aggressive driving He zeroed into the middle of a three-car squeeze on the high-speed 266-mile Talladega (Ala) track last May and the ensuing melee left Kyle Petty with a severe leg fracture But Irvan said Sunday's crash was "just one of those deals" When Elliott and Marlin got side by side he said they "got bottled up" and slowed in front of him His choices he said were "to go to the bottom or go to the top or lift and get run over from behind It's just a hard situation Nobody wants to be three abreast believe me" Allison let the wreck take a direction and then zipped past between Elliott and the wall Shepherd followed him "Sterling almost clipped me when he slid back across the track behind me" Shepherd said Mark Martin's Ford Darrell Wal-tnp's ChevTolet and Dale Jarrett's Chevrolet blasted into the action with no avenue of escape Jarrett's day was done and so was the team-ownership debut of Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs Ken Schrader and Jarrett underwent precautionary X-rays in the infield hospital "Halfway through the race is not the time to be sticking your neck out and taking chances" Allison said in post-mortems He called it "some unnecessary racing at the wrong place on the track at the wrong time in the race" He became the beneficiary He had it all his own way thereafter No DAYTONA 500 FROM 10 runners is a formula for trouble Marlin got caught in a squeeze when centrifugal force carried Irvan up the track and Elliott turned down to keep off the wall "Looks like we just ran out of real estate" Marlin said He said he decided "this isn't going to work" and tried to ease off the gas pedal It was too late The three cars hooked together and rode for what seemed a quarter-mile that way before separating Marhn's Ford then careered up into the outside wall and the chain-reaction crashing eventually would involve 14 cars and wipe out five Richard Petty competing in his 32nd and final Daytona 500 took a shot from the rear and spun several times through the grass inside the back straightaway He was able to continue and finish 16th but he was not that competitive before or after the incident Another victim was Hut Stricklin who drives a Buick for Bobby Allison That gave the senior Allison time to focus on his son's charge No one directly assigned blame for the chain-reaction bash but the innuendos targeted Irvan "Sterling was trying to pass me" Elliott said "hoping the No 4 car Irvan's would help him" in a bumper-to-bumper two-car draft Then the No 4 car dives down to the bottom of the racetrack I don't know how you can blame anybody Later though Elliott amended "I still don't think Ernie should have been digging the wav he was digging.
