LINC OLN SUNDAY JOURNAL AND STAR December 16, 1962 NU and Miami Plea se Crowd Scribes Peg Mira Show Best Since Johnny Continued from Page ID drive for the win with 1:09 left in the game. Ross had the Gothamites going wild with his antics. The dazzling junior from Helena, ran a kickoff back 92 yards for a touchdown. He scored another on a one-vard jack-knife dive. The Twister ran for 77 yards, caught a pass for 28 and returned two kickoffs for 123, giving him a total of 228 vards.

Thornton scored on two bull plunges into the line and had 43 yards rushing. Claridge, surprising Miami when Devaney brought forth a shotgun offense in the second half, hit 9 of 14 passes for 146 yards, despite intense pressure from the Miami line. In winning its first bowl game in 3 tries, Nebraska certainly put on a show with the Hurricanes which will erase the pain of a 21-13 loss to Stanford in 1941 at the Rose Bowl and a 34-7 gasser to Duke in the 1955 Orange Bowl. It also showed the Huskers they can win on television. Devaney, who climaxed his first season with the great victory, had an uphill fight to get the squad mentally ready for the contest as there was continued talk that the game might be cancelled.

There was still that worry in the first half as the Huskers used a break and Ross kickoff return to stay in a game which might have been a rout. Here, as briefly as possible, is how the. two teams scored 70 points despite 20 degree temperatures and frozen turf which forced most players into tennis shoes: Dave Theisen recovered fumble by fullback John Bennett at Miami 43. Ross right end on first play for 41 yards and Thornton plunged over from the one. Claridge ran extra point but slipped short of goal passed 10 yards to end Ben Rizzo to cap 54 yard drive.

Extra point kick wide. Nebraska 6, Miami 6. Miami- Mira hit 30-yard touchdown pass to halfback Nick Spinelli to cap 66-yard drive. Mira pass for extra point missed. Miami 12, Nebraska 6.

took kickoff on 8-yard line, started up middle and then broke to his left. He picked up a wave of blockers at Miami 40 and scored standing up. Rudy Johnson kicked extra point. Nebraska 13, Miami 12 Mira hit 4 passes as Hurricanes drove 76 yards. Nick Ryder scored from one and Mira passed to Rvder for two-point conversion.

Miami 20, Nebraska 13. led Huskers on 78-yard drive which took just 5 plays and 34 seconds to beat the halftime clock. Touchdown came on 6-vard pass from Claridge to Mike Eger. Johnson kicked extra point. Nebraska 20, Miami 20 at halftime.

Mira had hit 16 of 24 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. A Nebraska fumble started a Miami bid at Husker 21. Bennett scored from 3. Wilson kicked point. Miami 27, Nebraska 20.

Claridge led Huskers 70 yards in 10 plays. Thornton scored from one. Claridge ran right end for the two-pointer, Nebraska 28, Miami 27. intercepted Mira pass at Miami 39, Ross scored from one after Thornton galloped for 16 and Ross for 14 in drive. Thornton ran over right tackle for two-pointer.

Nebraska 36, Miami 27. returned kickoff 44 yards to Husker territory. Ryder scored from one with 9:29 left in game. Wilson kicked point. The Huskers drove to the Miami 8 but lost the ball on downs after that and the Hurricanes got the ball with 3:11 left.

pass interception finally halted Miami on the Husker 43. There were many other interesting and fan-pleasing items in this game. Nebraska not only used its shotgun offense but also ran a fake punt with a Statue of Liberty play. The Huskers were incensed once when they finally got a rush on Mira and he threw the ball behind his back and officials ru ed it an incomplete forward pass. Miami missed a field goal, faked a field goal, ran two Statue of Liberty plays, had a receiver fall down near the goal line as he waited for a cinch touchdown pass with no Husker within 20 yards.

Mira just was too much. New York writers said it was the greatest college quarterback performance here since Johnny Lujack with Notre Dame in 1946. All in all it whale of a football game. The March of Dimes, the benefiting chanty, have financial refxirt in for some time and the Dimes committee handled ticket sales. Undoubtedly promoters took quite a financial beating, Guarantees were reportedly $75,000 to Miami and $55,000 to Nebraska.

It was learned from reliable sources that the ABC television contract called for just $15,000. But again, worrying about figures after a game like that? It might be the thing that saves the Gotham Bowl. Run ('locked In HU New York Willie Ross made good tune, in addition to 6 points on his 92-yard touchdown run. A track coach in press box had a stop watch on Willie and the Twister was clocked in 10.1. TURKEY SHOOT Everybody Welcome 1:33 P.M.

While his business was ostensibly with other affairs, there undoubtedly will be a report on the antics surrounding the Gotham Bowl. The NCAA will take a long look at this bowl before giving its sanction for next year. Gotham Operation Leaking Two vears ago the game was cancelled. Last year Baylor and Utah State were not from game profits. When Miami and Nebraska asked to see the color of promoter Bob money before they would leave home, it unveiled some leaks in the Gotham Bowl operation.

Now Curran probably fielded a lot of criticism which should have been directed elsewhere. The request for advance payment obviously was a tough task because Curran must depend on ticket sales and the television contract for the income. Few tickets had been sold and the television contract settled. to credit that he found enough New ers who would come up with $65.000 on the strength of what the game promised. It was a week of crises.

Plans for a gala winter week in New to include not only the football game but indoor track, a basketball tournament and other sports is a sound one.

What the Gotham Bowl needs is to conduct a drive right away to put some money in the bank. This would furnish the necessary assurance to schools involved and it would also allow the bowl workers to operate on a smoother basis. What resulted this year was a general snafu with everybody ending up unhappy. New York's too big a town to put on such a shoddy performance. After game, selling should be easy.

CAaridge Forgot End Run New York There were some anxious moments along the Nebraska i e- lines at the end of the game. With 20 seconds left Nebraska had possession of the ball with 3rd down and Miami had no more timeouts. Dennis Claridge was or- to merely run around with the ball to kill the clock. Husker coaches and players chanted. Got it! got However, on the 3rd down play Claridge ran to his right, trying to elude the Miami end, went out of bounds to stop the clock with 12 seconds left.

Nebraska was then forced to punt instead of running out the clock as planned. After the game Claridge said, know what happened, but I was just trying to away from the end.
