be one of the red letter days of the Southwest Conference's 1937 season Texas plays Oklahoma in the annual classic at Dallas The Aggies will give Mississippi State a whirl in the Rose Festival feature at Tyler Arkansas will collide with the up-and-coming Baylor Bears at Waco will tackle tough Tulsa in Fort Worth Rice meets the Tigers at 11Juston will have the easiest asagnment of all against Washington University in St Louis For the second Saturday in October that is quite a card The Longhorns will probably have a rather pienickish afternoon of it with the Sooners who appear weaker than usual Nevertheless because of its background the game will be the largest attended and most closely followed attraction on the card Coach Homer Norton and his Farmers fresh from New York where they collided with the Manhattan team will catch a hard to handle customer in Maj Ralph Sasse's Bulldogs This is the same school that tied 0-0 in Dallas last year and according to reports from the Southwestern Conference the team is improved in spite of the loss of Ike Piekel This will be as hard a game as the Aggies will play all season After scoring easy 39-2 and 33-0 victories over Southwestern and Oklahoma City University the Green and Gold of Baylor will get its first major test when it meets Arkansas in Waco Coach Morley Jennings of the Bruins was in the stands here Saturday to scout the Razorbacks as they played A 1 NORMAN Okla Oct 2 (43)--An underdog but surprisingly potent University of Oklahoma football team maintained a tradition of not having lost a home opener in 13 years by upsetting the rangy Rice Owls before an estimated 8000 surprised spectators today 6 to The Sooners uncorked a scoring drive in the first period with a 14-yard pass Jack Baer to Pete Smith bringing the touchdown Baer's placekick was wide Play was in Rice territory most of the game although the Owls late in the last period advanced to a fourth down on the Oklahoma seven-yard line only to be set back on their heels by a hard-charging Oklahoma line' The vaunted Rice passing attack was almost completely muffled by the Oklahomans who themselves used a short spot pass with devastating effect in their touchdown march 1 RAMS 'P REPARE FOR JACKETS I Stamford's Eleven Wins at Seymour 0 I 0 2 1 I 7 t) 2 ALMOST WON IN '36 Texas Wesleyan question mark football team of the nine-club Texas Conference will be "initiated" into the conference Thursday night in Brownwood in an important game against the Howard Payne Yellow-jackets The Rams again will be underdogs in this game Howard Payne has but three returning lettermen back off last year's eleven which downed the Rams 21-0 But the Yellowjacket coach McAdoo Keaton has moulded another fine team from a large number of freshmen last season's squadmen and three returning vets While his team at this early part in the season doesn't figure to repeat as conference is believed to be stronger than the Rams Perhaps the Red and Black team hasl earned enough in their non-conference games against Weaterford College and West Texas State to be able to avenge the big defeat the Howard Payne team gave them last year before a large crowd at Cleburne DALLAS Oct 2 Gentlemen put aside their savoir faire today and roughly shoved the Southern Methodist University Mustangs about the Cotton Bowl winning 7 to 6 over a team which dozed through several opportunities The invaders from Shreveport had the advantage throughout The Mustangs came back with a rush after Centenary scored in the third but their fourth-period passing sortie failed to make up the needed margin Gent Backs Star Four fine backs and a stout line punched the Mustangs groggy Weenie Bynum who played with a broken hand Grandma Stone Ed Whitthurst plowhorse fullback and Langford Huddleston harried the Methodists with dazzling dashes and short passes The line never wavered and when the Mustangs failed to get their passing attack together they were licked The contest was drab until the early part Of the third period Bynum hurled a long aerial to Iluddieston on the 43 'Then he dashed to the 27 when he changed his mind from a decision to kick The next play he raced to the seven and Stone his replacement went over on the third try through the line Midway of the fourth the Ponies had their air attack clicking Crouch took Jack Morrison's short pass on the enemy 20 and eased over without a hand touching him Passes Fail Fresh with visions of victory the Mustangs then fired from above with regularity but the long heaves of Morrison son of Ray Morrison former coach went to no avail Centenary prevented completion of four straight just as the game ended Matty Bell Mustang coach shifted his lineup frequently in quest of a group which would overcome the somnolence of the squad as a whole No combination clicked Two of his- "better" players Keith Ranspot and Billy Dewell ends cost plenty In the third Ranspot attempted to lateral to Acker after snagging a pass on the Mustangs' 47 A Centenary Gent grabbed the ball and what appeared to be a determined drive was halted' The same situation obtained in the fourth with Dewell attempting to lateral on the Centenary for Lubbock in 1934 His home is at White Deer in the North Panhandle TULSA Okla Oct 2 University of Tulsa got stronger and Central Oklahoma Teachers got weaker as they went along today and Tulsa took the football contest going away 42 to 6 It wasn't a very good day for football anyway Some 7000 spectators mopped their brows and took on a good sunburn The players sweated up their nice new suits Starting off their scoring with a break on a Teacher fumble in the first period the Golden Hurricane went through its bag of tricks until it piled up six touchdowns and converted a point after each Thompson Again Tommy Thompson the Fort Worth sophomore slinger was in there tossing his bullet passes right and left Flashy Morris White the tailback scampered for easy gains and the whole roster of Vic Hurts players saw successful service during the contest Bus Blackburn started the action that gave the Broncs their one touchdown He snagged one of Thompson's passes and slipped down the sideline for a fine gain of 67 yards Though he slid over the goal line like a base running sliding home the ball was down on the three-yard line In two smashes Blackburn carried over but Jim Tyner's placekick was no good Tyner Teacher fullback who was a star at Sperry High School not so long ago bore the brunt of the Teacher game at offense defense and kicking He was a badly pummeled and mighty weary lad when the game ended Spectacular Play Several of Thompson's passes barely missed being more touchdowns They were dropped after they had sailed over the goal line into receivers' hands White's touchdown- in the third marking the third time the Hurricane had crossed the Bronc's goal line was the most spectacular of the day Tyner punted to the Tulsa 21 White took the ball easily and behind nice blocking swept 79 yards through the whole broken field and sprinted over the goal line without having a hand laid on him The Hurricane flipped a wide assortment of laterals during its scoring marches The players even worked the old Statue of Liberty trick once for a gain Thompson showed he could run with the ball too He made a couple of good gains on foot by faking passes in a manner reminiscent of Jack Robbins of Arkansas The game was history repeating itself and a little more Last year Tulsa beat the Teachers 40 to 7 Starting lineups: le Thompson It Taylor Ig: Shepherd Taylor rg within a few minutes of defeating the Porkers here in their own yard and thereby just missed turning in one of the more startling -upsets of the season At the beginning of the fourth quarter the score was 10 to 0 in Baylor's favor and it wasn't until the fading moments of the contest that Jack Robbins pegged a long pass to Jim Benton for the decision turning points Lack of reserves plus a mistake in strategy changing the defense in the last 10 minutes accounted for Baylor's collapse It Will be different this year down in Texas Jennings believes The difference between playing here and in Waco will be a big advantage to the Bruins and the latter will be better off in the matter of reserves With Billy Patterson pitching for Baylor and both Jack Robbins and Dwight Sloan operating for Arkansas what a display of bombing this game may develop For the first time the Frogs will play on their home ground when they attempt to weather the Golden Hurricane from Tulsa and the Fort Worth fans will brilliant booting by Sipreano Cancinc ITULSANS ARE TOUGH CHICAGO Oct 2 (R)--The American League batting championship most coveted of the season's individual honors was all wrapped up today for Charley Gehringer Detroit's ace second baseman Circuit statisticians will go into a huddle over the figures this Winter but the Detroit star held such a commanding lead over his nearest rival that there wasn't much chance of any decision reversal' With the season winding up tomorrow the official averages throuelh games of Friday gave Gehringer a plate mark of 375 which was 23 points ahead of the 352 average held by Lou Gehrig of New York The Detroit star known as one of the most consistent batters in the majors took over the league leadership during the third week of August He boosted his mark from 364 to 378 to replace Cecil Travis of Washington and during the final weeks of the campaign held his average consistently around the 380 level It was Gehringer's first hitting title rommonnionnon considered the best blocker on the team White Boots Well White will do the kicking when he is in the game and also some of the 'passing if Thompson has trouble connecting In the Oklahoma game two quick kicks by White both gave Tulsa scoring opportunities one of which led to a touchdown The Tulsa team that Hurt will bring to Fort Worth probably is the roost formidable in general strength and reserves ever developed at although it does not yet have the finish of some of the elevens turned out by Gus Henderson in his 11-year stay here Here is the lineup Hurt probably will start against the Frogs: Ends James (Curley) Hays and Buster Baze tackles Calvin Thomas and Gailard Sartain guards Co-Captain Lester Graham and Forrest Gregory center John Schellestede quarterback Tudor Jones left Arkansas the Hurricane has lived up to the advance information that Coach Vic Hurt has an improved team It was only by kicking a field goal in the final 30 seconds of play last year that the Baugh-powered Christians were able to outscord Tulsa 10 to 7 So you may draw your own conclusions about the Oklahomans chances this year It will be the first time Tulsa has ever played in Fort Worth A
