CG an South Dade court branch returns to full time By AMINDA MARQUES GONZALEZ Herald Staff Writer Starting Monday, the county court offices in Cutler Ridge will return to full operation with the temporary appointment of a retired judge. "There is a need down there, not only for the convenience of the public, but the police officers," Klein said. "It saves distance, time, travel and money." According to the clerk's office in the South Dade branch, more than 7,500 civil cases and 1,027 circuit cases have been filed this year. The moves are good news to the 60 members of the South Dade and Homestead bar associations, who feared having to travel at least 45 minutes to air their clients' grievances downtown. "It's kind of like the south end is cut off," said John Maas, incoming president of the Homestead Bar Association. "It seems like they're always the ones to suffer." City commissioners approved Guitiriz, a city in the province of Lugo, Spain, as Sweetwater's sister city because of the ties between the two. Cubans and other Hispanics have traditionally gone to Guitiriz to soak in the city's mineral baths, which are said to have medicinal properties, said Mario Gonzalez, who put the two cities in touch. "I talked with the mayor of Guitiriz, Francisco Fernandez Santiso, about establishing a friendship and cooperation between the two and he thought it was a good idea since there are so many Cubans who visit," said Gonzalez, a columnist for Cartel Magazine in Miami and a correspondent for a newspaper in Lugo.

Gonzalez presented the idea to commissioners last week. They unanimously approved it. Sweetwater's other sister city is Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. "We're very happy about having this affinity, this friendship with Guitiriz," Montiel said. "It's nice to establish this communication and learn about each other's cultures."
