script ailing Pryor Deeny Kaplan named Metro-Dade's new film and TV coordinator Friday plans to immediately plow into an issue that in the words of one industry leader could decimate the still-photography business in South Honda The issue stems from new Immigration and Naturalization Service rules that would limit work visas for foreign artists athletes and thing like this I hope Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas has an easier time Quite a coup Big news at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach Ted Potter who has been director of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem NC for 24 years will become executive director Aug 1 He replaces Richard Madigan former director of West Palm Beach's Norton Gallery of Art who resigned last spring after only six months on the job In Winston-Salem Potter was instrumental in leading SECCA from a small storefront operation to one of the Southeast's leading contemporary arts centers He conceived the Southeast Seven regional fellowship program which awarded cash grants to individual artists and he organized the national Awards in the Visual Arts (AVA) program whose 1990 winners' works are now on exhibition at the Hirshhom Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC In 1989 Potter became a house-hold-name-of-sorts when Andres Serrano became a $15000 AVA winner: It was Serrano's photograph of a flea-market crucifix immersed in urine that helped North Carolina Sen Jesse Helms launch an attack on the National Endowment for the Arts which partially funds the AVA awards eight weeks of bureaucracy in New York or Texas to get visas At week's end the word from Washington was that the measure was on hold for another six months Kaplan's appointment culminated a struggle that began June 2 when the county first placed an ad seeking applicants for the film job Political strategist Phil Hamersmith who wanted veteran production manager Linda McGowan to get the post insisted the ad be rewritten to say that 10 years' experience was as valuable as a bachelor's degree which McGowan didn't possess The second ad ran June 9: 256 applications poured in by the June 14 deadline On Friday Hamersmith said he wished Kaplan "the best" but accused Metro-Dade officials "of selecting somebody they clearly did not want" in order to keep McGowan out Assistant County Manager Tony Ojeda who oversees the parks department where the film office is ensconced refused to address that issue and expressed dismay at the maneuvering that had taken place to influence the county's selection "In 23 years in local government I have worked for three city managers four county managers and seen umpteen department directors hired and fired But I have never seen any GAIL entertainers mistaken identities By BILL COSFORD Herald Movie Critic Another You is a painfully inept comedy that tries so very very hard to be goofy and off-the-wall that you wind up feeling sorry for the participants it's like watching a stand-up comic bomb on stage In this case of course there are two comics involved Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder who have made three earlier films as an odd couple (beginning with Silver Streak the best of these followed by Stir Crazy and See No Evil Hear No Evil In the contrast of the two men Pryor a sinewy streetwise black schemer vs Wilder the feckless doughboy there has been a sharp comic snap and many laughs over the years But net now Pryor clearly is ill he seems unable to walk without difficulty and his voice has lost nearly all of its authority And Wilder is not able to carry both movie and Pryor For the chemistry to work Pryor must seem the competent one and Wilder the weakling This new attenuated version is sad to watch It would be sad to watch I'm afraid even if the stars were in their prime because Ziggy Steinberg's script is such a muddle Pryor plays a con man sentenced to community service and assigned to provide companionship to a newly released mental patient a reformed pathological liar played by Wilder They become victims of an elaborate plot MOVIE REVIEW Despite much straining Wilder can't make his character a funny liar he'd need some funny dialogue for that after all And Pryor's con man is never given so much as a mini-sting by which to show his cunning The funniest bits in the film are those involving Mercedes Ruehl as a woman who claims to be Wilder's long-lost wife but who refuses to sleep with him These bits alas reduce Wilder to a mere drooler and exclude Pryor altogether What a bust "These are global jobs that keep an entire support industry alive" Rodriguez said "They need apartments hotel rooms rental cars food We can't have obstacles like this" Last week Lauren Gail Dade's acting film director met with Job Bush chairman of the Beacon Council Robert Reboso the city of Miami Beach's film and photography coordinator and others to ask that Miami be made an INS "Expedite Unit" so models don't
