4C THE MIAMI HERALD MONDAY APRIL 8 1991 John Cage goes beyond words Old new works christen New World dance space MUSIC REVIEWS experience For others this critic included it was a hoax Lewinter recital Andrew Lewinter principal horn of the Florida Philharmonic appeared in an abbreviated recital playing sonatas by Beethoven and Hindemith at the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts last Thursday courtesy of the Community Concert Association of Miami Beach Recently named PACE Classical Artist Showcase winner for 1991 Lewinter is a greatly gifted player with a matte mellow seamless tone clarity and accuracy in treacherous passages and largely effortless production He made both sonatas seem almost play which they For recitals however his platform manner is too blandly matter-of-fact His reading of a poem that set off one movement of the Hindemith was done with no serious attempt at eloquence in fact it might have been better if he bothered reading the poem at all But such things can be adjusted More important is that Lewinter seems an assured talent By JAMES ROOS Herald Music Critic "Empty was how John Cage dubbed the "spoken he performed in the down- town auditorium of Miami-Dade Community College for the Subtropics Music Festival and there was no disputing the aptness of his title For almost an hour and a half Cage sat on stage with propped on a music stand slowly turning pages and drawling unintelligible sounds into a microphone adjusted at mouth level: "Ouh uuh annn prawem pshr Then there was silence several minutes of silence as the rapt audience waited breathlessly for his next meaningless syllable to emerge: utt pooot Was Cage put- ting us on? I think so Sure he wants to make us more attentive to the noises of everyday existence that can seem musical Some of his mouthings resembled speech slowed to a comical crawl on a tape recording or an alien tongue of some old tribal chieftain speaking softly But no doubt in my mind that Cage was smiling wryly behind the serious mask he affected for performance He seems to me now rather like Picasso who toward the end of his spectacular career made even inferior art "a Picasso" merely by signing it After an hour or so went by there were giggles here and there in the audience mingled with coughs and the shufflings of listeners squirming in their chairs Little by little they began exiting in a scene reminiscent of Farewell Symphony Still at the end when spontaneous applause cut off performance there were more than enough enthusiasts on hand to set off a clamor including a few standing ovations Cage glanced at his watch stood up then bowed and bowed grinning broadly For those who did some shushing when the dronings were threatened by isolated interruptions including purposely jangled keys in the Friday night audience this Cage may have been a near-religious new music By LAURIE HORN Herald Dance Critic A revival of Doris 1953 modern dance classic Ritmojondo dominated the program last weekend when New World School of the college-level Dance Ensemble gave its spring concerts in the new convertible studio theater on the eighth floor of its new building at 25 NE Second St With its large sprung-wood stage excellent lighting good sound system and secure atmosphere the space is a boon to dance community New College Division trains modern dancers and dance teachers Both groups have a little more leeway age-wise than dancers in their teens About eight of the two-dozen-or-so New World performers are actually finished dancers Choreographers for the evening then were faced with showcasing a few virtuoso dancers against a decently trained but not always remarkable ensemble Two with-it modem dancer Jane Carrington and Spanish choreographic sorceress Rosita Segovia produced interesting premieres that specifically solved the problems Both choreographers used a lot of group walking patterns interesting asymmetric spatial arrangements and arm gestures to create a fabric on which could embroider As in her satire of ballet divertissements False Entrances Carrington introduced a theme of a few squiggly arm movements early in the first movement of her Joel- DANCE REVIEW songs set to three popular songs by Billy Joel Throughout the piece this movement clue was developed ultimately taken into the torso by David Hernandez Mary Spring and Tamara Sisler fine dancers familiar from local professional troupes Meanwhile the jeans-clad group slid through the halfembraces falls brush-offs and spatial avoidances that seem to speak so clearly about male-female relationships these days Embrujo Flamenco set Cristina Masdueflo an exquisite principal dancer with Ballet Espaflol Rosita Segovia against an ensemble of seven women that often bunched in a tight wedge changing direction as they clapped out rhythms Masdueflo was captivating but the real discovery was Arca-dio Marin and Max original music for guitar flute marimba and percussion Ritmo Jondo on the other hand remains a classic study in male-female tensions Magnetic also in Spanish-influenced modern dance style Masdueflo dominated the piece opposite a strong performance by Peter Anthony Jr incorrectly credited in the program as Pete Perez Other dancers notable in other works throughout the evening included Shari Azar Pilar Anday and Andree Pun in Hannah Clear Out and Aimee Ortiz in Sharia Crossroads of Imagination Cheatwood back in charge of Channel 7 News car" a 1991 Volvo but the real attraction is the freedom to pursue programming ideas with the Hollywood contacts he made through Fox Channel 7 plans to allow Cheatwood the time and money to develop new Inside Reports The grand scheme is to secure rights to air games featuring South proposed baseball expansion team Channel 7 would become a baseball and news Superstation a la Ted TBS with the sports broadcasts bringing in a bevy of built-in advertising (most of it for beer and cars) that could quickly perk up the WSVN bottom line Whatever Cheatwood concocts to attract viewership certainly will be watched by competitors But getting viewers to stop at Channel 7 as they zoom through the 50-channel cable tuner is a Cheatwood says day that people can turn to us and say they look like the other when we he says intense lead (Fitz) the hyperbolic co-anchor (Daniels) and the melodramatic reporter-tumed-anchor (Sanchez) easily hold their ground against the electronic bells and whistles that pepper the newscasts surrounded by Joel and what he Fitz says "and when we do something on the set we go in and we toss it around" am not a Joel Cheatwood Daniels says but the punchy nudge-nudge style she developed to host Inside Report included some by Cheatwood That fine-tuning can go right down to the outfit the anchors wear says Joan Lovett co-anchor at 7:30 She calls Cheatwood a man" think anybody has ever come up to me and said like you to do this" Lovett says sense of news includes a lot of style a lot of color a lot of glamour He likes a stylized Back when Sanchez started specializing in aggressive crime reports with no jacket his sleeves rolled up and his tie loosened Cheatwood noticed a positive response in audience research The research also showed that crime was the No 1 issue on minds and Cheatwood took note He created "Crime which eventually helped make Sanchez an anchor and has been copied by two stations in Los Angeles Fox brought Cheatwood to Hollywood in January 1990 to create Personalities as well as a national news service for Fox stations Decision to return When the news idea was shelved several months later and Personalities turned out to be a ratings stiff Cheatwood decided to return to Miami Cheatwood who has two sons age 10 and 7 with wife Neva discuss the details of his agreement with Channel 7 He does have a traditional journalists punch the remote this whole pseudo-urgency thing that just gets under my admits one Channel 7 staffer think important to let people know that what getting is a lot of show Former Channel 7 anchor Steve Dawson fired a year ago by successor Mark Toney says Cheatwood is a news guy whose vehicle was TV a TV guy whose vehicle was Cheatwood dispute that He says he holds news content and its presentation in equal regard He calls himself guy who understands the realities of He says he get caught up in that do not recognize as an entertainment love news but I love television This TV executive his title at Channel 7 is vice president of news also likes to take the credit Dawson says but Joel gets the limelight He puts himself in front of the camera in a very soft persuasive style then he tells his anchors to scream and Cheatwood maintains nothing reckless or sensational about his news program But spokesmen for police departments which receive more coverage from Channel 7 than any local station always agree after a stoiy their main goal is to get the exclusive and a lot of times they get their facts straight" says Miami Police spokesman David Rivero Rivero says and the features have been valuable for helping catch criminals but times the reporter would get to the scene and boom! the camera would be on and he would start talking without getting the facts" cast Part of take on TV news is to cast anchors with watch-me personalities The CHEATWOOD FROM 1C year later reputation among local competitors also has remained formidable widely regarded as the only innovator who could take Channel 7 to the top Channel 7 news employees past and present regard Cheatwood as an icy taskmaster (They nicknamed him Velvet for the cool manner with which he fires employees) He was in action last Monday when a new Cheatwood creation a revamped lightning-paced 7:30 newscast was riddled with glitches its first night on the air During the post-production meeting an angry Cheatwood tersely told the 7:30 staff in his calm quiet voice to clear up the ing confusion at the top of the show I want another show like the one tonight I take another show like The next evening the 7:30 newscast was virtually a new show it moved quickly but without confusion and graphic window dressing was in place Earlier in his career Cheatwood says he would have bounced a phone off the wall after the 7:30 debut Not now In a crisis he found you could be the guy whose voice was not raised and who was very matter-of-fact and to the point get what you a surprising credo from the executive whose newsroom has succeeded and earned a reputation as a sometimes reckless tabloid-tinged operation by not being matter-of-fact During big stories Channel 7 lunges at viewers in a flash of bright colors and full-screen letters hoping to knock them into rapt attention TV as entertainment Anchors Sally Fitz Penny Daniels and Rick Sanchez talk about and reports They switch frantically to the when a new tidbit of information is (though the story may have broken hours earlier) or to the when first arrive style makes some NEWSPAPER Enjoy spectacular sights sounds and exotic foods at 43RP Aiyjv7p Newest Hottest Adult Superstars ALL
