Since that time untold millions throughout the ages have attested to the reality and the power of God in their lives through being born again. We renovate houses and add on more rooms. We tear down old buildings and build new ones in our cities, calling it urban renewal. Millions and millions of dollars are spent every year on health spas, beauty resorts and exotic cosmetics all by people hoping to reshape their laces or renew their bodies. In like mannpr, people frantically pursue all sorts of promised cures for the renewal of their inner lives. Some people hunt for renewal at the office.

Others search for spiritual renewal in exotic oriental religions or processes of inward meditation. Still others seek inner peace and renewal in drugs or alcohol. Whatever the path, however, they eventually come to a dead end. Why? Simply because man cannot renew himself. God created us.

Only God can recreate us. Only God can give us the new birth we so desperately want and need. I BELIEVE this is one of the most important subjects in the entire world. Governments may be elected or may topple. machines may advance and retreat.

Men may explore outer space or probe the ocean depths. All these vents are part of the grand plan for humans on this planet. But the central theme of the universe is the purpose and destiny of every individual. New birth happens in all kinds of ways. It may seem to happen over a period of time or in a moment.

The paths people take to reach that point of decision may be very direct or very circuitous. Lives can be remarkably changed, marriages excitingly improved, societies influenced for good, all by the simple, sweeping surge of individuals knowing what it is to be born again. It may be that down inside you sense an unnamed need you cannot describe. Perhaps you have been consciously searching all your life to fill a void in your heart and to find a purpose for living. Perhaps outwardly you have been very successful life, but know it has not brought you peace and true happiness.

Perhaps your life is an unbroken chair of heartaches and shattered dreams. Maybe you are just curious. There are many learned works of theology which probe the meaning of the new birth or as theologians often call it. I know there have been different emphases among theologians concerning the new birth. Some have stressed the importance of what God does to bring us to faith.

Some have stressed the importance of man's search for faith. SOME HAVE THOUGHT of the new birth as a single event in time, while others use the term to speak of all God wills to do in our lives. Ultimately there is a mystery about the new birth; we cannot understand everything about it, for our minds are finite. However much the theologians may disagree about fine points of doctrine, the central truth of the new birth is clear: Man apart from God is spiritually dead. He needs to be born again.

Only by God's grace through faith in Christ can this new birth lake place. When the Viking spacecraft landed Mars, the world exclaimed, An ingeniously designed robot has accomplished a task that man had dreamed about fur generations. Exploring the great mysteries of the universe, trying to predict the quirks of nature, attempting to predict a trend in society or politics arc all modern concerns. On office walls and on bulletin boards we see slogans like or Your Work and Work Your Corporations hire firms at large fees to determine how they can improve their planning. IN OUR DAILY lives we keep a calendar, trying to mark down appointments and schedule our days.

If there were no planning, children would never get to the dentist, mothers would never make the community meeting, businesses and labor unions would collapse. We are always searching for ways to streamline our lives, to simplify daily living. But what about the greater issues of life and death? Do we plan? Do we need to search for answers to the deep moral and spiritual questions so that our lives are more orderly? Man has always thought so, which is why we have philosophers, psychologists and theologians. Today, however, much of the world in search of knowledge and fulfillment ignores God We are taught to be independent, to make it on our own. As we look at an individual we may say, someone made it." We admire him and respect his ability to himself up by his We have even had a well-known TV eommerical that said, mother, rather do it And yet within each of us is a deep-seated frustration: ought to be better.

I believe I was made for something more; there must be more to life than this. Why am I so ONE OF greatest encounters during His teaching ministry was with an intellectual. What did Jesus, the carpenter trom Nazareth, tell this well-educated man? He said, in these words, tnus. sorry I explain it to you. You have seen something that troubles you, that fit your system.

You admit I am more than an ordinary man, that I act with the power of God. This may not make sense to you, but I explain it to you because your asumptions do not allow for a starting point. Nieodemus, to you not Nothing in your thought patterns permits it. You cannot see with spiritual insight until you are born spiritually. You will just have to be born The intellectual asks.

can a man lie born If anyone is to find the answer to his search he must reject much of his old system and plunge into a new one. He will see the possibility of what he thought was impossible. Monday in the EXPRESS: The development of religion Excerpted from How To Be Bom By permission of Word publisher Fair chance Mrs. Schlafly proves through what she has written that she just does not understand the liberation movement. I am 17, and I definitely consider myself a feminist.

But I believe at all in several of the things which Mrs. Schlafly claims are dogmas of the liberation All feminists really want is to give women a fair chance to be whatever they want to be. If a woman feels her best role is that of a housewife or another traditionally female occupation, then I think it is fine for her to pursue that role. But I think it is wrong for her to be forced into that role just because she is a woman. This is my basic conception of liberation true freedom to choose own way of life.

Mrs. Schlafly also attributes to all liberationists frenetic desire to force all women to accept the title Ms. in place of Miss or Personally, 1 have never heard of a feminist who believes that all women should be forced to call themselves Ms. 1 think that people should be called whatever they want to be called. However.

Ms. is often useful because it is convenient to call a woman Ms. when one know if she is married or not. Another erroneous assertion which Mrs. Schlafly makes is that reversals are being forced upon high school students.

Guidance counselors urge reluctant girls to take shop and hoys to take home economies They are as wrong as efforts to make a left-handed child In the first place, I wonder where Mrs. Schlafly, who judging by her photograph been in high school for a while, got the information to make this statement. It seems to me that adults who are at least in their 40s or fids are awfully prone to making wrong statements about what goes on the high schools today. My brother and I graduated from high school just last year, and I have another brother in the tenth grade. I was never urged by any guidance counselor to take shop, and neither of my brothers can recall ever being urged to take home economics.

In the second place, 1 cannot understand what is wrong with guys learning to cook, or girls learning to fix cars, if this is what they want to do. Mrs. Schlafly apparently does not understand the simple fact that not every man is going to have a woman around to cook for him after high school, and not every woman is going to have a man to fix her ear. High school should prepare people for the way their life is probably going to be, not the way someone thinks it should ideally be. I am very offended by Mrs.

I am a feminist, or a libber if you will, yet I consider myself inferior to any man. I am perfectly secure in the knowledge of my own intelligence and worth. Susan L. Hankins Sick at heart I agree with what Phyllis Schlafly is saying.

1 am one of those who to the Austin I.VV.Y. conference and came back very sick at heart as to how the lesbians and the pro-ERA women had it all arranged to go their way, and what they did at other l.W.Y. conferences was sickening. They want to destroy family life, and run man down and have government control our children and kill babies by abortion. This is not what God intended us to do.

If people don't wake up and stop this, our country will be destroyed. Write your congressmen and them to vote against this before it is too late. I want qur tax money being spent for these kind of things. P. A.

Heaven help us We are not men and do not want any place. We have a beautiful place all our own. Never in history have women bad such good opportunities for expression both outside and ill the home. Heaven help us if leadership of our country falls into the hands of a few disturbed women! Mrs. L.

P. (Mary) Summers very much against this liberation. I believe a woman should be treated as an individual and not a group of females. Some females are better as a career woman than a housewife or mother. Women should have the choice, as individuals, as to what ihev wish to do with their life.

abortion and lesbians. And to compound that, leaders like Betty Ford, Lady Bird Johnson the presidents' wives all there to lend support. The only word I can think of is disgusting. 1 hope somehow (risking popularity) Phyllis Schlafly prevails. Yes.

even Anita Bryant. Mrs. Roland Salary A difference Phyllis Schlafly is a very wise woman. I agree with her that men have their traits and women should have theirs. Biologically there is a difference as well as emotionally, and there is a good reason for this us she has pointed out.

Politically, if the ERA is passed, it will be but a few years until mandatory federal child care is instituted and we will soon be in a communistic society like Russia and China. Family structure will be destroyed. Women should have the right to stay home and teach their children the values that we cherish. All this will change if we approve the immoral resolutions as they were proclaimed by the J.W.Y. to approve of homosexuality and other resolutions.
