Dolly Parton Direeted by Colin Higgins Playing at the Wedgwood UA Cinema 6 and Forum 6 Running minutes Rating: PG (occasional profanity) Dolly Parton may or may not appreciate the comparison but the premise of this secretarial saga reminds me at times of Mr Walker Its AU Over a country song Billie Jo Spears recorded several years ago And it may remind some office workers of nettlesome as pects of their own jobs While it makes some sharp state ments about sexism in the office and job discrimination Nine to Five is more concerned with fun than with pamphleteering Its farcical script wears a little thin at times but director Colin Higgins scrambles adroitly The result isn't Noel Coward but it's fun Jane Fonda demonstrating that she is a fine actress by playing a demure character joins the work force after her divorce and discovers few rewards in the secretarial pool of a huge corpo ration Her supervisor (Lily Tomlin) has been passed over many times so that less qualified males can be promoted And another chum (Miss Parton) is subjected to daily wrestling matches in her capacity as the boss' personal secretary The girls get drunk together one evening and fantasize about what they would like to do to the boss played with a fine corporate flair by Dabney Coleman The three fantasy sequences are like something out of an old '50s comedy and the gambit works perfectly There follows some silliness with a dead body and an attempt to settle Coleman's hash It's all over and the clever epilogues flash on the- screen before you have time to ponder the inanity of it all Miss Fonda acquits herself as well in an essentially supportive role as she does in a Mute Or a Coming Home and Miss Parton makes a commendable acting debut The Tomlin character is the prime protagonist and her performance is top drawer Sterling Hayden has a nice bit late in the film and Elizabeth Wilson is on target as Coleman's of ficious assistant Stewart country and western snows at a com Fridays and at violent temper It is no small feat to hold one's own in scenes With De Niro but Pesci does that as he spits out a litany of Bronx-accented obscenities NEWCOMER CATHY Moriarty is effective in a much quieter way as the teen-age beauty La Motta marries when his boxing career is near its zenith Her underplaying provides an interesting contrast to the high-voltage rantings of De Niro and Pesci Scorsese goes for believability down the line in the secondary roles That is most evident in Nicholas Colosanto's low-key portrayal of the mobster who orchestrates La Motta's much-publicized dive Raging Bull is no Rocky and that is meant as a compliment The good guys if you can identify them do not win But they keep punching Stewart-A Igk i ''z' a 1 'lt r(i iemt' sti -4 4' 7 Vi 0 l'''-' 7 4 i Martin Scorsese Playing at the UA len 6 and Six Flags Cinema Running time: 119 minutes Rating: (extreme profanity and ring violence) The paunchy man on the screen looks every inch the middle-age ex-pugilist Only the voice reminds you long seconds into the scene that the man is Robert De Niro There is an element common to all great performances It is utter audience immersion In the character We forget about the actor the star It comes as no surprise that De Niro pulls this off in his portrayal of boxer Jake La Mott The amazing thing is that he does it instantly De Niro does in fact deliver two performances in the film He is the angry lean La Motta punching his way out of the Bronx and into the world middleweight title And he is the overweight slightly mellowed ex-champ trying to earn a living as a humorous after-dinner speaker and nightclub comic For the latter scenes De Niro put on more than 50 pounds FILMING APPROPRIATELY in black and white director Martin Scorsese reminds you once again as in Mean Streets and Taxi Driver that he and De Niro make special magic together on the screen Raging Bull rep-reset movie craftsmanship at its finest And it depicts the violence of boiing with a graphic intensity which at times is difficult to watch Based On La Motta's own story of his career Raging Bull paints an unabashedly harsh portrait of him Tortured by imagined infidelities of his young wife he winds up accusing (and savagely beating) his own brother The film deals more with that smoldering rage than with La Motta's actual career although there is ample footage in the ring and it is superbly filmed A couple of unknown performers in I 6 le: nd en )h Ile' an Dr: on he ise at NO he 1 41.
